I've got two strains that I consider my own white whales, that I've spent a few years chasing and researching foggy memories, with very little results to show for it. The first is PNW Dogshit, a local Portland strain I fell in love with long ago, with long-carried local and sentimental ties.
...my second strain Hawaiian Haze, and subject of this thread, has personal origins a LOT less noble. Almost embarrassingly so, that I'd almost prefer to make up a better story, in order would make the strain sound more deserving of a write up, but such is life..
Though I had multiple ounces of Hawaiian Haze a multitude of different times, over the course of 3-5 years ago, it all came from the same source: through the mail, compressed and vacuum-packed in flat 1/4oz units, stuffed into a standard envelope, from a dude in BC Canada, simply named BCBUD.
As decidedly sketchy, and pedestrian as that sounds, dude's shit was ridiculously on fucking point AND cheap. I think the rumor was that that he wasn't so much connected to the BC hippy/medical scene, so much as the PNW biker scene. I surely don't know claim to know anything about him or his origins, nor did I get too comfortable with his wares, as like most mail order dude's eventually do, he disappeared with tens of thousands of dollars of folks outstanding cash. Regardless, for the surprisingly multiple years he was solid, he always had the hottest strains going, perfectly grown and cured, for well below local prices....mushed into an envelope. I'm hoping by some miracle, someone else who dealt with the dude in the past will step in and back up his skillz, so that claim sounds less ridiculous. He was hot shit on various weed boards for a few years there, so maybe he's not anywhere near the mystery I'm presenting him as...I'm not exactly super well connected (except to my couch).
Aaaaanyway, way to make a long story...longer. As to Hawaiian Haze itself: it probably had more personal bag appeal than any strain I've ever run into. Not necessarily because of looks....she was covered in tons of thick, rusty orange hairs...but also had been stuffed in an envelope for a week. No, most of her bag appeal, and her appeal in general, just came from her absolutely wonderful REEK. One of those strains you can just stuff a bag over your face like a feedbag, and inhale for a half-an-hour. The Hawaiian Haze smelled like a football field covered in rotten, over-ripe mangoes and passion fruit, and underneath that just the faintest, familiar yeasty/musty hints of haze. As a haze lover, it's those undertones drive me batty, and they took over the taste of the smoke itself upon exhale, which started with a wonderfully pungent mango flavor, perfectly matching the fresh smell. The high was also wonderfully haze dominant, very social, uplifiting and unusually giggly, for someone who said goodbye to the giggles decades ago. The combination of such sweet and pungent tropical flavors with the haze high was absolutely something special that I long to track down again. I also remember being surprised at the size and dense structure of the buds, which stuck out as remarkable, not just for compressed mail-order weed, but for haze flowers as well.
So, what's the scoop with this strain? Anybody familiar with her? I'd love to find her, but the only mention that I can find in regards to Hawaiian Haze in seed form is an old Dutch Passion release that was discontinued years ago. Hawaiian Snow, from Greenhouse, has Hawaiian Haze in it's lineage and the raves of many staunch fans of hazes and unique sativas....but the meager few descriptions I've heard of Hawaiian Snow's taste/smell weren't particularly sweet or fruity, which is critical to my memory/fantasy. Hawaiian Haze is also a somewhat generic name, and it coulda easily just been a local/personal cross that was referred to as such. Maybe it's a BC/Canadian favorite?
Anyone got more info for me? Thx in advance ICers!
