What's new

Hawaiian Haze?

I've got two strains that I consider my own white whales, that I've spent a few years chasing and researching foggy memories, with very little results to show for it. The first is PNW Dogshit, a local Portland strain I fell in love with long ago, with long-carried local and sentimental ties.

...my second strain Hawaiian Haze, and subject of this thread, has personal origins a LOT less noble. Almost embarrassingly so, that I'd almost prefer to make up a better story, in order would make the strain sound more deserving of a write up, but such is life..

Though I had multiple ounces of Hawaiian Haze a multitude of different times, over the course of 3-5 years ago, it all came from the same source: through the mail, compressed and vacuum-packed in flat 1/4oz units, stuffed into a standard envelope, from a dude in BC Canada, simply named BCBUD.

As decidedly sketchy, and pedestrian as that sounds, dude's shit was ridiculously on fucking point AND cheap. I think the rumor was that that he wasn't so much connected to the BC hippy/medical scene, so much as the PNW biker scene. I surely don't know claim to know anything about him or his origins, nor did I get too comfortable with his wares, as like most mail order dude's eventually do, he disappeared with tens of thousands of dollars of folks outstanding cash. Regardless, for the surprisingly multiple years he was solid, he always had the hottest strains going, perfectly grown and cured, for well below local prices....mushed into an envelope. I'm hoping by some miracle, someone else who dealt with the dude in the past will step in and back up his skillz, so that claim sounds less ridiculous. He was hot shit on various weed boards for a few years there, so maybe he's not anywhere near the mystery I'm presenting him as...I'm not exactly super well connected (except to my couch).

Aaaaanyway, way to make a long story...longer. As to Hawaiian Haze itself: it probably had more personal bag appeal than any strain I've ever run into. Not necessarily because of looks....she was covered in tons of thick, rusty orange hairs...but also had been stuffed in an envelope for a week. No, most of her bag appeal, and her appeal in general, just came from her absolutely wonderful REEK. One of those strains you can just stuff a bag over your face like a feedbag, and inhale for a half-an-hour. The Hawaiian Haze smelled like a football field covered in rotten, over-ripe mangoes and passion fruit, and underneath that just the faintest, familiar yeasty/musty hints of haze. As a haze lover, it's those undertones drive me batty, and they took over the taste of the smoke itself upon exhale, which started with a wonderfully pungent mango flavor, perfectly matching the fresh smell. The high was also wonderfully haze dominant, very social, uplifiting and unusually giggly, for someone who said goodbye to the giggles decades ago. The combination of such sweet and pungent tropical flavors with the haze high was absolutely something special that I long to track down again. I also remember being surprised at the size and dense structure of the buds, which stuck out as remarkable, not just for compressed mail-order weed, but for haze flowers as well.

So, what's the scoop with this strain? Anybody familiar with her? I'd love to find her, but the only mention that I can find in regards to Hawaiian Haze in seed form is an old Dutch Passion release that was discontinued years ago. Hawaiian Snow, from Greenhouse, has Hawaiian Haze in it's lineage and the raves of many staunch fans of hazes and unique sativas....but the meager few descriptions I've heard of Hawaiian Snow's taste/smell weren't particularly sweet or fruity, which is critical to my memory/fantasy. Hawaiian Haze is also a somewhat generic name, and it coulda easily just been a local/personal cross that was referred to as such. Maybe it's a BC/Canadian favorite?

Anyone got more info for me? Thx in advance ICers!

Sloppy, Bernal Heights Collective usually carries it...too expensive for me although I had to try it at least once. Don't know if that place even has clones. However, it is a collective that is very local.

If its from B.C look into the Hawaiian from federation, it was fairly popular and I would not be surprised if it was what your looking for. I found the descriptions for you

Hawaiian Sativa

Sativa. The Hawaiian is a pure sativa originating from the big Island of Mauna Kea. It's been bred and stabilized for more than 15 years on Vancouver Island. Sugary with crystal, it has a very distinctive citrus odour and menthol flavor that tingles the taste buds and tickles the brain. Tall vigorous growth with few branches, classic cactus shape. Extreme elongation in the first two weeks of flowering with tufts of long thin hairs developing into long sticky spear buds which thicken up after the sixth or seventh week. The lemon flavor intensifies when flushed for a long time (3 weeks) with straight water. Very energetic and up high, great to smoke during the day for an active lifestyle. Height 8 feet Flowering time 10-12 wks Yield 8 oz full size. 3/4oz in a 2 gal pot. Harvest outdoor Nov 1 to forever.

Thx Epiphyte! That's not exactly in my neck of the woods, but good to know it's floating around in some capacity. How was your sample?

Thx Afghanada! That certainly could be it, or a close relative. There's more than a handful of things floating around that it could be, since I'm not exactly rock solid on it's origins, and everything with Hawaiian genetics sounds vaguely similar....I wish I had the cash/time/space to give every possibility a try. Was any of the Federation Hawaiian you tried worth seeking out?

The hawaiian sativa and the hawaiian haze do not seem like the closest cousins to me. Not to say that they are not related. However, the hawaiian sativa seemed more hazey and the hawaiian haze seems to have more of that tropical edge. Granted, i saw one sample of the haze and the samples i saw of the sativa only represented one pheno.

I have thought about this thread for the last 24hrs. Here is what I think because i have been there. You have too much nostalgia for hawaiian haze. There is so much similar herb out there. If i smoked the hawaiian haze pre19, i would remember it a lot better than if i smoked it now... Shit, my most nostalgic strain is fourway. I even think it was from canada. It was vacuum sealed and i got it in a big, NE city. It was that Canadian herb you always hear about but never see even if you are in Canada. So in that case, maybe it was that special cut. I would love to see the fourway today. It cured into such a complex flavor and boy did it get me high...at least that is how I remember it. But today, I know some good bubba kush competes, if not, blows the fourway out of the water.

The dogshit on the other hand. That seems like it is more unique and something worth searching high and low for..

I got a pack of federation blue hawaiian sativa seeds in 2009. I have started two which are have been male...and I just started the last 5 that I had. I am going to make some F2s then search for that special blue pheno and that special hawaiian pheno...you are better off trying to recreate that beautiful memory than relive it.

Thx for the thoughtful reply, Epiphyte. As you mentioned, and I mumbled about in my reply to Afghanada, there's so many Hawaiian strains I could probably just as easily pop something similarly special on my own, with less effort than I could track down the 'real' Hawaiian Haze of my dreams.

There is a clone of this that has been rocked pretty hard on vancouver island for quite a few years, goes by hawaiian, hawaiian haze or hawaiian punch. Quite finicky feeder but it's done in under 10 weeks, yields very well big buds and has a great smell. Unfortunately most people growing it feed to heavy and cut it early so it tastes like crap.. typical BC standards..

It's not fed hawaiian sativa I was told the hawaiian clone is kona gold x swt tooth

Thx greenmango! That's not entirely out of my way, and doesn't sound entirely rare either (if I wasn't a lazy bastard), and matches up with what little info I had. I'm an admitted haze whore, so I may be overvaluing her, but a great smelling, high-yielding 10-week haze certainly just makes it sound more appealing.

Thx for all the recent action in this thread guys, it had zero responses for like a month.

Lot's of people grow it here and I just got really tired of smoking this stuff, the smell is nice though. Definitely has bag appeal due to the look and outrageous smell but we may be talking about different cuts who knows.
