Fasting

I am in the middle of a 24 hour fast and I gotta say besides the intense hunger I am super focused.

Anyone have any experience/advice on fasting?

Lot's of water. Rest when you need it. Longest I ever went was 10 days. You should really go at least 3 days if you can and 7 would be primo. If you wanna go hard core cleansing, not fasting, check out the product line from Arise & Shine Herbal Products. I've done that program more than a handful of times but not much lately. Nothing out there like it IMO/IME. Had one friend that went 54 days on spirulina. Towards the end of that 'fast' he was hauling armloads of wood out in the forest. You can also read books/works by Herbert Shelton if you wanna go the strict water fast route. The Master Cleanse is a bit easier to handle than a straight water fast for many so check that out also. You get a little sugar, some electrolytes and the cayenne keeps the digestive system stimulated a bit.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to heal is just give your body a rest which means no food for an extended period.

Fasting is pointless. What are you trying to accomplish? Eat Paleo, drink a gallon of h2o a day and exercise.

And I apologize, but the best thing for your body is definitely not to fast. Unless it is for spiritual purposes, you are putting your body under stress it doesn't need. All of this "toxins", "parasites", "colon cleanse" is a snake oil concept. EAT RIGHT, EAT THROUGHOUT THE DAY TO KEEP YOUR BLOOD SUGAR STABLE AND APPETITE UNDER CONTROL AND THRIVE.

Drink plenty of liquids, enjoy the great outdoors if possible, focus on the reasons for the fasting and avoid heavy physical activities.
I used to fast for spiritual purposes and hangover treatment but only for 24 to 36 hours maximum after that i get hungry ;)
Works for me for both purposes but i admit it's a dangerous practice.
Not has dangerous as feeding yourself on fast-food until you die of coronary or other related disease ;)
Enjoy your fasting

Try 28 or 30 days like the month of ramadaan, its good for you once in a while, but in ramadaan we eat and drink when its dark, but during light hours nothing not even smoke, swearing, looking at women nothing.try that:laughing:but good for you and stay strong and do it,at least its your choice, but remember that a lot of the world live this every day and not out of choice.

A few years ago I had some sort of stomach virus and the Dr. told me not to eat anything for 2 days and just drink water. I had to drink a lot of water 'cause as soon as it went through me, the hunger pains would return. I mean severe pain.

The 3rd day I started to eat again and had one of the best runs that year; I just flew.

I think that fasting might be useful short term, but I just don't like to feel hungry; its a pain that I don't enjoy.

It's called starving :D

I did seven days and must say it clears your head and body.

Would I do it again?... well... maybe.

I couldn't face it, I eat ALOT, I'm always frying a steak. I also go to the gym a lot and usually food + work = muscle. I find if I don't eat for a couple hours I get really grumpy and snap at things I usually wouldn't.

I think its best I eat regularly and don't fast, for other peoples sake :)

Exactly. Fasting just isn't necessary if it isn't spiritual or a "test of will". Even then, no more than 24-48 hours. Fasting is a false fad and bad science. That is all. Our bodies are excellent at cleansing. Imagine that? The biggest improvement you can make in your life health wise is eating MORE of the good stuff, not eating nothing at all and thinking you are cleansing yourself internally.

If you want to lose weight in a rush? Eating nothing will not accomplish that. Most of what you're losing will be water weight, not fat. And if you don't do it right, you'll be eating muscle off your body. If you want to understand what a healthy approach to "starving" or "crash dieting"/cleansing would be, check out a book by Lyle Mcdonald called "The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook". If you can get through 14 days of that torture, you've got spirit. This is called a protein-sparing modified fast. You will retain muscle, have energy to get around (sort of) and will kick off more fat in 14 days than any other approach.

There is quite a bit of promising studies about the health benefits of Intermittent Fasting and Every-other-day fasting. Some of the benefits are increased testosterone, muscle sparing/fat burning and life extension. I employ both along with a modified Paleo diet. A great sight to learn about IF is leangains.com. Hope this helps.

YES. Now intermittent fasting IS promising. An example would be waking up, and not having your first meal until mid/late afternoon.

Fasting done properly is not starvation. I have a big secret for what to do about any muscle loss after you're done...it's called EXERCISE! Fasting has nothing to do with 'crash dieting'. I was fortunate to work with a few people with a lot of experience in fasting and cleansing. As for the parasite thing...lol...I've talked to people who underwent a certain program and were a bit horrified with what they got out. Using fasting as a 'test of will' thing is stupid. What I'm talking about has nothing to do any type of muscle building program like the leangains thing but some friends do follow what would probably be considered calorie restricted diets for general health and longevity.

If you think fasting, done properly, is harmful you just haven't done enough research IMO. People think when they stop eating they start to die or something. At a certain point yeah you're gonna get organ damage but you'd have to be an idiot to go that long.

Why dismiss muscle-building? It can also be considered "muscle-sparing" (Depending on macronutrient breakdown and overall calorie consumption when not fasting) which is not a bad thing.
Dude I'm not dismissing that at all. I can see the value in what you mentioned. That's not what I was saying but that we're talking about different things. My background is not muscle building but general nutritional supplement stuff over the last 20 years in business and 25 years personally. I got involved cause I spent almost 2 years in bed sick in my early 20's and out of everything I attribute the regular cleansing and fasting to what worked for getting me back on my feet again.

Find me a legit source with scientific findings concluding fasting for more than 24-48 hour periods is beneficial to the human body in any way shape or form. It isn't. Exercise? The average person can put on 1 lb of muscle a month eating perfectly. Maybe 2 lbs for the first few months/year with exact nutrition. Meanwhile, you "fasting" can eat that up at a much quicker rate. Not much logic there. Your body does all the cleansing you need if you feed it and hydrate it properly. As far as your "experience" with cleansing "healing" you, that is where these myths get started. I understand this instills an unshakeable belief that it does something positive, but it just isn't real. No sense in arguing this if you truly believe it helped you. Literally, ZERO POINT. No one in the world will convince you otherwise so it is pointless to argue. It won't kill you, won't harm you in the short term, but it isn't doing anything positive so it also isn't worth trying to change your beliefs. Fasting for more than a few days messes with your endocrine system, causes muscle loss (if not doing a psmd) amongst other things.

Did you know body builders who cut weight before competitions can have testosterone levels in the range of a castrate? ZERO sex drive. Fasting is not a healthy act in the long term. Simply put, bodily functions, hormones etc rely on the right sources of food. People starve unwillingly across the world, leave it to us fat people with all the food we can ever want to conclude that starving yourself for extended periods is HELPING the body.
