What's new

17 day old seedlings. Drooping yellow leaves and dry crispy leaves.

*Grown from seed in straight Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil
*17 days old
*Watered with distilled water when the cups feel light and dry
*600watt HPS 24hours a day about 2 feet above the plants
*Roots are sticking out the cracks in the bottom of the cups

Any idea what the problem could be???

Overfertilized from the FFOF???
Too much light?
Light too close?
Need to be in bigger pots?

:thank you:

Possible but I doubt it.

Yep. And the HPS isn't your best choice for lighting either.
You would be MUCH better off using this florescent or one similar.

i would keep the hps.. also when plants get sad easily in cups transplanting to a bigger container usually helps a lot..

fox farm ocean forest is too rich by itself for some strains.. but that does not appear to be the case here looking from your pics

so instead of using cfl just repot that shit

Vegging under HPS is a waste of light, electricity and $$. Fluorescent T5 are greats bulbs for VEG and can be stacked together to be equivalent to a smaller HPS, but still less electricity. HPS is only affordable to run 12hrs a day during flower. HPS 24hrs a day is $$$.

You're NEVER supposed to feed plants straight distilled water. Filtered is better because the cal, mg, other minerals still available to the plant.

Not familiar with Fox Farm Soil, but your plants are burnt from either or both the hot light or hot nutrients within the soil.

Hey brother, fox farm ocean forest runs very hot on seedlings and does that. A strong plant can probably pull through but FFOF is around 1800 PPM and that's way to damn high for seedlings...also i didn't see you say anything about what your PH was.

FWIW, i've flowered plants in beer cups before they just stay small they don't start turning colors.

It's said many times here,2 cent said it clearest,REPOT them right now it has nothing to do with light,I've heard of many who made the same mistake with FFOF,too rich fer seedlings and you can tell by the looks of yer plants they're overferted.Save them NOW,buddy!!
And yea why?? give them distilled water, that's something you do only with germinating seeds to have the most neutral environment, when they're growing tap water should be fine as long as the PH is okay, which in most cases it is.

Looks like too much water and a lot of nutes.

We must have started the same day. Heres a tray of Hybrid From Hell Hashplants started on April 20:

They've had just one shot of maxibloom at the rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon. I let them get light and dry between waterings. Babies don't do well with high nutrient levels.

I cut drainage slots with a dremel saw, lots of them:

Then I hammer them with CFLs. I've had them under 3 of these:

I'm packing them off for fertile sunlit meadows today:

Thanks for all the help everyone!

I guess I'll go to the hydo shop tommarrow and pick up some different soil to replant them in.

This is going to be an all organic grow, and I read that with organic grows you should not use tap water because the chlorine in the water will kill the micro-organisms (or somethin' like that) in the organic soil.

So instead of using tap-water I bought some Distilled water at the store. But now that I think about it there were other types of water for sale for the same price such as "Spring Water".

So I should be buying "Filtered Water" from the store, not "Distilled Water"???

Whatever.
You have several experienced growers and members advising you to change your lighting.
The Hps is a complete waste at that stage unless you are flipping them asap. Wrong light spectrum and far too intense for seedlings.

But they do still need larger pots, so your plan of attack isn't a waste of time either.

Good luck friend.

If you let tap water sit out without a top for about 24 hours the chlorine will evaporate out and the water will be safe to use.

However, if your water source contains chloramine rather than chlorine this does not apply. Chloramine is ammonia+chlorine and is used by some cities specifically because it does not evaporate out of water as quickly.

Regardless, transplant them now. Good luck. :ying:

But I notice that you slip another cup over the top of the one with potting mix. I think your plants are probably sitting in trapped water too long.

Its important to get some runnof to flush away nutrient salts before they build up.

A repot to pots with good drainage will go a long way towards saving those babies.

hmm, I fed distilled water for years with excellent results. People wouldn't use RO if they followed your advice.. You have to supplement the missing minerals with your feedings.

Those little sluts are root-bound + pH is probably hovering around 7+. Go grab some gallon pots & a pH pen, get that pH down somewhere in the range of 6.3-6.8 & green will return. Fert burn will show on the tips of foliage, I don't see it on urs, & since ur using distilled I'm almost Positive it's just a pH fix. But definately transplant, looking quite bound up.

Don't fret, they'll be better than ever in a week. Good luck!

most likely your tap water contains chloramine.

A good cheap way to reduce the amount of chloramine is by using a brita pitcher.. don't waste your money buying water

A simple way to tell if your water has too much chloramine/chlorine is by smelling the water. A brita pitcher should remove that smell..

its not an ideal solution but works for a new grower on a small budget..

beyond small budget style.. I suggest checking out hydrologic's line of products from chlorine removers to full on RO systems, I have been very satisfied with their quality and the quality of the water.

also you can run a conversion 600 watt metal halide for vegging using the same ballast.. which I personally prefer over using CFLs, but I do use a 42 watt CFL in my cloning tent with an ez clone 30 and it works great

You can use ocean forest the whole run for many strains.. but it would be too hot for many it all just depends on what the cut can handle.. I' sometimes run bubblegums in pure ocean forest and they come out fantastic and never show any sign of burn.'
