Like the non-existent food crisis that helped spark the revolutions in the Middle East?

Sorry bro. Food crisis has already started globally. Third world people are getting desperate and pissed, but it's not effecting you yet personally so it doesn't exist right? American tunnel vision.

The USA will start WW3 when China starts demanding repayment en masse IMO. We will never repay our debts. Ever.

The aforementioned view of international politics coupled with food engineering capacities increased daily, and I just can't agree with ya bro.

we're way up north here in Minnesota & certainly outside the best of the farm-belt.......

From Wikipedia:

The average mean annual temperature in Bemidji is 37.2 degrees. The coldest month tends to be January with an average daily high temp of 16 degrees and an average daily low temp of -4 degrees. The warmest month tends to be July with an average daily high temp of 79 degrees and an average daily low temp of 57 degrees. The average annual humidity tends to be 47%. The average annual snowfall is 41.1 inches and the average annual rainfall is 23.8 inches. The average day Lake Bemidji freezes over is November 26 and the average day the ice goes off the lake is April 26.

that's right, ice covered lakes for 5 solid months, remember the Irish potato famine? Corn doesn't even start its days growth cycle until the air temp reaches 53F, our warmest month has avg daily lows of 57F which works for corn but how about the other 60 days on either side of July required to grow sweet corn? our prevalent soil is red clay which is OK for potatoes and not much else.

example: I walked into the local cafe @ 6am one brisk morning in August, I motioned to the owner Tom to look over my shoulder (bank clock & temp thru the window) and told him "hey Tom, it's damn near freezin' out there!" & the temp was reading 33F.

the strain northern lights (we see the real borealis lights often being so far north) was developed for climates like this.

as the old sayin' goes....... it's a tough row to hoe.

What is a crop, that is nutrient dense, that the average non-gardener will not recognize?

I ask in case of a economic crash, I would grow this is my front yard.

I'm thinking radish and or turnips.

you guys are worrying for nothing.

there will be no food shortage in the US, this is the land of abundance.

Hyperinflation gramps? bro? c'mon, if that were the case there would be a revolution in this country. Government gets overthrown, like in Egypt, no need to stress

Any major fuel crisis or shortage will result in skyrocketing food costs....remeber that about 60% of diesel is used in agriculture, the chemical fertilizer companies relys totally on oil, and most of what North Americans eat is trucked from all the fuck over the place (to the tune of 100 calories being spent on transport for every calorie of food).
If them trucks mit der food stop rolling, any given major metropolitan has about one month worth of food.

One month....that's it.

Then the food riots begin.

learn how to save seeds. it is a very simple thing to do but a little more complicated than most folks think. lots of books out there. the seed racks and mail order places may not be there to save your skin.

a basic understanding of root cellaring could be very handy one day too.

Stock up on heirloom seeds since they will provide reliable production of the same product generation after generation. Screw those hybrids.

we don't need oil, we have natural gas on our own soil. solved that problem right there.

Besides, oil just dropped 8% on the barrel.

Never underestimate American ingenuity, tough times are getting tougher, but technology is advancing so fast that soon all these problems will have an excellent solution.

I'm not worried about it, got my guns and food, living my life, growin trees, making $, banging females, livin' it up ! life too short to worry about all this shit that may never happen..
