I live in the north. Around winter solstice it gets -40 and stays there. Couple of years back I got the great idea of doing butane solvent extracts outside at -40, way below the boiling point of butane.

Worked wonderfull, took a can opener to 2 cases of butane refills and poured them into a 6 quart mason jar (originally full of pickles), I will skip the details of distilling and solvent recovery.

The advantage was pouring it into another jar containing 12 ounces of trimmed bud and gently shaking a full 2 minutes. That is the standard I now judge all my extracts against. Very clear with slight yellow tinge, consistancy of hot honey.
Powerfull enough to cause me a panic attack first time. I absolutely could not remember taking my last breath, and when I thought about it I realized I still was not breathing. Ended up on the floor crabbing about on my knees and elbows trying to get my ribs to go in and out. Onlookers said it lasted about 10 seconds, seemed much much longer.

I'm used to it now, but my son finds it extremely amusing to overdose his friends, does no good to warn them first, they do not believe.:bigeye:

Only get to do this once a year, and I am saving up already.

Cool! Jump takes advantage of the cold Moscow winters as well.

After being on here for a little while I have noticed people are using much less butane than I am when running large quantities. I have generally stuck to about 1 can for every 20 grams. The last time I did a comparison between using one and two cans through an ounce, the yield was different by 3% which is huge IMO. I just saw someone running 3 cans for 90 grams. Is that normal? How tightly are you guys packing your tubes?

3 cans on 90 grams is arguably excessive, however when doing a run that large there likely using a vessel that could be wider than 1" which making it slightly less efficient causing them to use more butane to get an even soak? Just a theory.

That's excessive? I don't get this. I have a 1" tube, about 17" long, and I fit 42 grams in there snuggly. Butane comes out the end for maybe 6 seconds by the time the first can is finished. I can't imagine getting a good return only running 3 cans through 90 grams.

Its all relative to your extraction tube i suppose I can fit roughly 25-30 grams in a stainless steel turkey baster which is my extractor of choice for maintaining small batch quality. In said tube I would NEVER run more than 300ml of butane. through said extractor no matter how much material I was using. I have been know to use as little as 150 ml of butane on a full baster of material. Butane is a pretty efficient solvent and I find that maintaining proper density in your pack can help maximize the efficiency of your butane.

Ive only run bho a few times using a Honey bee extractor(google it you'l find it straight away) its over an inch wide and fits about ten grams inside, how tightly do you pack? I didnt pack it that tight but did pack it. With just bud i got 1.9 grams and i used a little over one can at 300ml do you think this is too much butane? Should i pack tighter?
peace

Good question bro and I am sadly no expert, but here is what I have experienced!

The requirements are different depending on whether the process is a flow through or a soak. I have been more casual in packing our 1 1/2" X 48" column on the reclaim system, because it a soak system and it is easier to wet all surfaces.

I pack my 1" flow through columns with a 1/2" wooden dowel and press firmly to a tactile sensation, which I have shown students, but am hard pressed to adequately describe.

I press firmly with the dowel so that there is little compression. Tactilely, I at first feel the material move under pressure from the dowel and then firmly resist. I stop compressing at firmly resist.

My shortest flow through column that I use regularly is 12" and the most used a 36". I also have intermediate columns that I have experimented with but now see almost no use.

On a 1" X 36" column, the weight of uniformly prepared material can vary from about 72 grams to about 94 grams, depending on what kind of material that is. As I use a wadded coffee filter diffuser in the injection end, those lengths may not exactly compare to their ostensible volume.

Typically a 36" column flows clear butane after or before (3) 300 ml cans, but some take 3 1/2 to 4 cans.

I have repacked and rerun the spent material and yielded a few more percent, but the cost to save them using butane is high, unless it is highly enriched material to start with.

The second strip will produce a less psychoactive med, more suitable for late evening, but unit cost will be higher.

I have had the most cost effective success stripping any remaining cannabinoids using alcohol, with the cheapest being denatured (Methanol) at $10/gal.

We typically use those extractions to make pain relieving topicals, which are typically suffering from over demand and short supply here locally.

the consistency is like hardening hair gel, after 24 hours the blob has reformed itself and taken the shape of the dish.

good thing i chose a dish with a lower center than outside :)

bubbles seem to have risen to the surface/collected into larger, fewer bubbles
