Hey everyone. Ok so I recently set up my first big op. right now i am running 9 600s. this is in a basement right now, not really set up as good as i wanted. i will be switching to some commercial space soon, and will be hopefully running at least two rooms like the one i have now. basically, i wanted to know if i should by 1000s, or more 600s. i will be running coco top fed drip-to-waste, and i will most likely have multiple 4x8 tables set up. should i put 3 600s, or two 1ks over? the money isnt an issue, just want to know if anyone has experience. i have always ran 600s, i consistently get at least 20ozs a light. jw if it will be better to pump up to the next size light. thanks a lot everybody.

ive always wondered.....what is the temp of two 600s compared to 1ks....

on my last run i did side by side....under 2 600s i yielded way more bud than my 1ks..however i definately had some heat issues because some of the buds came out crispy and airy...under the 600s my fan leaves turned yellow pretty quickly..

under the 1k everything is still lush and green but the yeild isnt looking as big, mostly because the sq ft is smaller...4x4 under a 1k while under the double 600s its a few feet wider, able to pull a QP-HP off that extra 2x4......the top colas are a little bigger for my kush, extremely huge on other strains....the 600s do have a nice even canopy though..

so basically..

600s - more sq coverage, smaller colas but even canopy.....cons - possibly more heat and less lumens on top colas

1000s - nice large colas with less issues with heat

i love my phantom digitals though...they are 1000s but i can switch to 600 if the heat is too high....also my 600s are the dimmable lumateks so i turn them down to 400 on hot days....save a few k in watts and keeps the temps down by 4-5 degrees..

600's are more efficient (highest lumen to watt ratio) and produce less heat making them easier to manage when running several lights IMO.

^would 2 600s be hotter than a single 1k though? i said the 600s produce more heat simply because there is more of them....i know in my double 600 section is hotter than my 1k section....pretty much over the same footprint..

thanks everybody.

craven-yea going to most likely be doing some for some SOG, so the plants are going to stay nice and short. that might change though, so i am going to build the room to have at least ten foot ceilings. wont even cut the 2x4s. thanks

prop215- yea i notice with my 600s i dont get anywhere near as big of nugs as i see on some of these grows. might have to do an experiment myself.

bastard- thanks for the info, was kind of thinking that myself, you got me starting to think thats the way im gonna go.

I would personally run the 2 1ks because they will penetrate the canopy more on the plants giving you more bud lower on the plants. I think you would pull more weight for sure, not to mention the buds will be more dense.

However with 3 lights instead of two you might be able to situate the lights over the plants more effectively allowing for a more even light distribution throughout your entire grow area.

yea i am def going to be going sog, so penetration is not much of an issue(haha im laughing at that....penetration.....) oh man im too high.

A huge trade off between a 1k and 600 is the distance you can get them from the plant, obviously the 1k is gonna produce more light and have better penetration but they have to be much further from the plant. This is why I prefer 600's, I'd rather have a more efficient light closer to the plant than a larger light much further away. If you were to get a cool tube this issue would be much less significant, even without ventilation through the tube.

I'm not certain whether 2 600's would be hotter than a 1k but I'd imagine it would be, though if you were to run a series of 600's in cool tubes within a foot of the plants I think you would have better results than you would with fewer 1k's even if they ended up at about the same wattage. This is due to their efficiency and the increased number of light sources which would in turn increase coverage. Granted, you would have less penetration, though with SOG and the previous mentioned factors I believe it would out weigh the benefits offered by 1k lights.

This is my standpoint on the use of multiple lights in a larger SOG setup, I'm in no way saying 600's are better than 1k's in general, this is just my opinion for this setup. I personally like 1000w's on there own in cool tubes with switchable ballast (mine is MH/HPS with 500/750/1000 watt settings) as they are easier to mange in Texas summers, this isn't a problem for everyone though.

I would definitely go with dimmable digital 1ks. I have 5 lumateks, I can go from 600W to 1k with a click. 750w is a really nice middle ground. Much brighter than 600W but cooler than 1K.

I ended up going with 600's when I was growing large.. I was able to get the foot print where I wanted it.
With the 1Ks, it just seemed harder to get a more even distribution. Too many 'hot spots'/cold spots, or places of high/low intensity. With the 600's, there were more medium spots and less cold/hot spots.. Also, from my understanding they are a little bit more efficient than 1k's but I haven't read too much into that.

thanks for the input. i think im gonna go with the 600s, i like being able to get a more even light distribution. thanks again.
