Mystic Bond

One becomes a votary of the Lotus Sutra by virtue of his practice in past existences. It is karmic relationships that determine which among so many of the same kind of trees are made into images of Buddha. It is also because of karma that some Buddhas are born as provisional ones.

Nichiren Daishonin became a votary of the Lotus Sutra, not because of his relation with the Lotus Sutra in this lifetime, but because of past karma --- because he practiced the sutra in his past existences. Trees are insentient, but some of them "are made into images of Buddha" --- for example, the Gohonzon. Others become bars in a prison. The Daishonin says that "it is karmic relationships that determine" their fate because plants cannot think or act on their own will. What they are made into depends on their inherent karma, and that decides who will use them.

For every effect, there is always a cause that produced it. The law of causality unites past, present and future. There are Buddhas and Buddhas. Some are the Buddhas of Hinayana teachings, others of provisional Mahayana teachings. Each has a different task and a different power, and all of this derives from their karma, from their acts in past existences.

We are engaged in the propagation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as true disciples of Nichiren Daishonin, but what about those who have no firm basis for their lives? What they consider to be happiness is as ephemeral as a thin blanket of snow in the noonday sun, as fleeting as a mirage, and as rootless as duckweed floating at the mercy of waves. How fragile, illusionary and empty their way of living is, engulfed in the constant changes of life ! Think of the misery a man feels when stripped of a reputation that once intoxicated him. Or of the petty, short-lived "haughtiness of ashura" --- those who were in some position of authority yesterday, but are removed from power today.

Such people are to be pitied for the weakness and shallowness of their foundation in life. For I know that in the depths of all that flux and phenomenal impermanence, unaffected by anything, lies the ultimate foundation --- the Mystic Law. You must be convinced that people who make that foundation their own have the most meaningful lives of all. My mentor, Josei Toda, was awakened to the fact that his true entity was that of a Bodhisattva of the Earth. When we are awakened to our mission and our true entity, we, too, will feel infinite power welling forth from within. Toda's words, filled with a thousand emotions, still ring in my heart, as in his poem written for me:

Now in bud is the mystic bond
Which we formed of old.
Let it come into full bloom
Stout-hearted and magnificent.

Our predecessors, who developed the Soka Gakkai into what it is today, were always aware of "the mystic bond which we formed of old" as they continued their struggle. You are now fighting as members of the Soka Gakkai, the group of Bodhisattvas of the Earth. Believe that it is because of your past karma, and fight courageously on to accomplish your mission. Attain your ultimate purpose in this life, for only by so doing can you lead a life of complete fulfillment.

A Gohonzon is a special, sacred piece of paper. Humans are flesh & Blood. We are not plant material. My Human Heart worships all of mankind, because I LOVE FAMILY!

Sorry Buddy, but I believe that statement is utterly false. The Gohonzon is not a 'sacred piece of paper' my man. It really isn't. I'm sorry you feel that way!

Please be careful with the causes you make because you truly reap what you sow. I agree with PTD, but in all the years I've seen you posting I never thought you would take it to this level?

Come up north to be with me, I'm in your continent and want to help you. Forget about all the drama and keep doing your best for you and Ann. This practice begins with you and you are the one tapping into the power of the Gohonzon. The sentient and insentient beings of this universe are all potentially within the same world of Buddhahood we strive to attain. The same goes for our cats, dogs, and anything else in our lives.

The Gohonzon is the necessary component, I hope you get one again in this lifetime. Hang in there my friend, you too deserve to win.

Desi, you and I both know that what always matters most is what is in your heart. So long as one does not reject the Gohonzon, your Daimoku will always ultimately lead you to it someday. Based on your faith, I am sure the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Thus Come One considers you to be a disciple. Like I said in the first place, we all love you dude. Keep the faith baby!

"During the Daishonin's lifetime as well, what was known as the great earthquake of the Shoka era (August 1257) caused unprecedented damage. Grieved by the pain and suffering of the people and amid great persecutions, the Daishonin embarked on writing his treatise, 'On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land,' thereby raising the banner of peace and justice for all humankind. I am going to share some observational thoughts in the hope to create some understanding

these are my PERSONAL feelings and are very relative to my particular experience here in this lifetime

I too like many other people have been drawn to this thread

I too find the writings of Nichiren to be so profound as if they were written from my soul

I too come from a past with karma influenced by dogma

So I come into the thread and experience a huge ephiphany and my heart and being are touched

thus the journey begins

Now I can go into a very big cause and effect conversation here but I will not, I do not wish to side track the focus of the topic

I will say that I am still learning and have yet to commit to the reception of a gohonzon and that after experiencing enlightenment through chanting that the seeming pressure to receive one seemed at odds with my reverence for Nichirens teachings

this may not make sense, but if I gave the relative factors I could make a very strong case for wanting to treat a decision like this with great respect and reverence

It did at times feel as a judgement of my practice to be told I was not reaching full potential without a gohonzon

thankfully it did not mitigate enlightenment or reason

I understand the empowerment the lay organization gives to the practitioner by allowing them to directly own and participate in chanting in front of a gohonzon

look at the testimony of those who have and do chant in front of a gohonzon!

but we are all of the ten worlds regardless of who we are or where we are in our practice and our personal testimony of how Nichiren has worked in our lives should not be used as a measure of contrast and thus a measure of judgement in regards to another partitioner practices

depending on where they are in the ten worlds it can instead of encourage, discourage

I think this is why it is mentioned not to criticize the practice of others who embrace nam myoho renge kyo

from my understanding, the foundation of buddha is build on the bodhisattva practice, and this is the model of practice we should evoke when we interact with the world around us

that we should reach our full potential being bodhisattva for others in return for a buddhist enlightenment to free us from delusion and enable to obtain our full potential

when we apply our Buddhist enlightened mind the lives of others are we encouraging perfect practice in theirs? even with the best intentions does that guarantee how it will be received?

this is why its is better to give selflessly and compassionately as bodhisattva to enrich the lives of others while we use the enlightenment from nichiren to enrich our personal lives

we will be shining examples and by compassionately and selflessly giving in our lives and in our chanting and all our practices of the power of nam myoho renge kyo

when we give to the world selflessly and compassionately as if it were ourselves, without bias of who, where when how, you are giving to the mystical law and allowing IT to power to transform the world

it will build your faith and enlighten you and teach you how to live harmoniously with world around you as you learn to reach your full potential whether it be in this lifetime or the next

do not fear "in this lifetime"

your faith should eliminate the fear that anyone who has nam myoho renge kyo in their hearts will fail to reach their full potential in this lifetime or another

just my take on why sometimes encouragement seems to stir some emotion

and I hope that for all those who seek to teach extra diamoku and compassion, because it is a calling to share what you have received that is an really the greatest testimony there is

:)

"All disciples and lay supporters of Nichiren should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim. This spiritual bond is the basis for the universal transmission of the ultimate Law of life and death. Herein lies the true goal of Nichiren’s propagation. When you are so united, even the great desire for widespread propagation can be fulfilled. But if any of Nichiren’s disciples disrupt the unity of many in body but one in mind, they would be like warriors who destroy their own castle from within." - "The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life", WND-I, page 217

It's important that we first of all chant daimoku! There is no strategy that can surpass the strategy of the Lotus Sutra. Through chanting resonant daimoku, let's strengthen our life force and enhance the powers of the protective forces of the universe for the sake of our victories and successes.

From a translation of "Daily Encouragement", by President Ikeda, published in the Seikyo Shimbun.

---- DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT ----
"One day, my mentor Josei Toda and I were talking about the Soka Gakkai's mission to widely propagate the Mystic Law, and I asked him why it was important to strive in faith with the spirit of 'not begrudging one's life' taught in the Lotus Sutra. He replied to the effect:

"'On our planet, people kill each other in wars; our economies are based on the survival of the fittest, and do not necessarily lead to human happiness; and many of society's leaders, who by rights ought to help others, instead often look down on and exploit people. And the same kind of thing is found in such spheres as politics, science, and religion. Call it humanity's karma, but society is complex and full of contradictions. Nowhere there can we find the fundamental path to happiness for all people.

"'Only Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism sets forth the means for fundamentally transforming our karma. It teaches the path of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity, the path of lasting fulfilment and satisfaction. There is no higher path in life than this. That is why, if you give your all for the sake of faith, you will never regret it.'

"Deeply moved by Mr. Toda's words, I renewed my determination to give my all in pursuing this unparalleled path in life just as he taught.

"There is no more exciting, satisfying, or meaningful way to spend one's life than dedicating it to the noble cause of realising happiness for all humanity."

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Since you acknowledge that you are just beginning, may I respectfully say as a forty year practitioner that in my opinion you don't have as clear an understanding of many of the concepts of the Daishonin's teachings as it would seem at times that you might think that you do. That's not an indictment, it's an honest observation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but don't wrap that up in the pretense that there is a wide latitude for personal interpretation. That is not the case and the Daishonin was very strict in admonishing about that fact.

Saying "...pressure to receive one seemed at odds with my reverence for Nichirens teachings" is almost an oxymoron. If one were to have reverence for Nichiren's teachings, then to embrace the Object of Devotion would be an automatic reaction without any sense of pressure what-so-ever. Let's not forget, when we encourage others to receive Gohonzon, we do so at his direction. And for those reverent toward his teachings, he is unequivocal in his direction to embrace the Gohonzon as part of the faith REQUIRED to attain Buddhahood in one's present form.

It's all very clear. It's why this thread is so damn long. Anyone can debate the facts of what he says to conform to any of their own thinking that they want. But it won't change what he has said. Or what he said about people that do that.

So unfortuately, it is to be expected. Please try and remember that when you talk about the Gohonzon, if one thinks of it as a sacred, special piece of paper, what you are expressing as the object of devotion is incorrect! The only correct expression of the Gohonzon is one that includes the object of devotion as having two aspects: the object of devotion in terms of the Law and the object of devotion in terms of the Person. Please note:

Gohonzon
[御本尊] ( Jpn)

The object of devotion. The word go is an honorific prefix, and honzon means object of fundamental respect or devotion. In Nichiren's (1222-1282) teaching, the object of devotion has two aspects: the object of devotion in terms of the Law and the object of devotion in terms of the Person. These may be described as follows:

(1) The object of devotion in terms of the Law: Nichiren's mandala that embodies the eternal and intrinsic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. That Law is the source of all Buddhas and the seed of Buddhahood for all people. In other words, Nichiren identified Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as the ultimate Law permeating life and the universe, and embodied it in the form of a mandala. In his Questions and Answers on the Object of Devotion, Nichiren refers to the object of devotion for people in the Latter Day of the Law as "the title (daimoku) of the Lotus Sutra." He further describes the title as the essence of the Lotus Sutra, or Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to be found only in the depths of the "Life Span" (sixteenth) chapter of the sutra. The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind reads, "Myoho-renge-kyo appears in the center of the [treasure] tower with the Buddhas Shakyamuni and Many Treasures seated to the right and left, and, flanking them, the four bodhisattvas, followers of Shakyamuni, led by Superior Practices. Manjushri, Maitreya, and the other bodhisattvas, who are followers of the four bodhisattvas, are seated below" (WND/366). In this passage, Nichiren clarifies the relationship between the Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the Buddhas Shakyamuni and Many Treasures, and the various bodhisattvas depicted on the Gohonzon. In this way he emphasizes Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as the fundamental object of devotion. The Real Aspect of the Gohonzon explains that all living beings of the Ten Worlds "display the dignified attributes that they inherently possess" (WND/832) through the benefit of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Nichiren viewed the Dai-Gohonzon, the object of devotion he inscribed for all humanity on the twelfth day of the tenth month in 1279, as the purpose of his life. This can be gleaned from his statement in On Persecutions Befalling the Sage, written in the tenth month of 1279: "The Buddha fulfilled the purpose of his advent in a little over forty years, the Great Teacher T'ient'ai took about thirty years, and the Great Teacher Dengyo, some twenty years. I have spoken repeatedly of the indescribable persecutions they suffered during those years. For me it took twenty-seven years, and the great persecutions I faced are well known to you all" (WND/996). The object of devotion in terms of the Law is explained in greater detail in Nichiren's writings such as The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind and The Real Aspect of the Gohonzon.

(2) The object of devotion in terms of the Person: In his Reply to Kyo'o, Nichiren writes, "I, Nichiren, have inscribed my life in sumi ink, so believe in the Gohonzon with your whole heart. The Buddha's will is the Lotus Sutra, but the soul of Nichiren is nothing other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" (WND/412). Nichiren here expresses his realization of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as the origin and basis of his life, which he embodied in sumi ink in the form of the mandala he calls the Gohonzon. In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, he says, "The object of devotion is thus the entity of the entire body of the votary of the Lotus Sutra." "The votary" here refers to Nichiren himself. He also says, "The Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law is an ordinary person and an ordinary priest." "An ordinary priest" here refers to Nichiren. Because Nichiren revealed and spread Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which is manifest as the Person and the Law, he is regarded by his disciple and designated successor Nikko and his followers as the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law. Nichiren himself writes in The Opening of the Eyes: "On the twelfth day of the ninth month of last year [1271], between the hours of the rat and the ox [11:00 P.M. to 3:00 A.M.], this person named Nichiren was beheaded. It is his soul that has come to this island of Sado and, in the second month of the following year, snowbound, is writing this to send to his close disciples" (WND/269). He states that he "was beheaded," though actually he survived the execution at Tatsunokuchi, implying that the ordinary person Nichiren ceased to exist. In this context, the passage "It is his soul that has come to this island of Sado [his place of exile]" means that Nichiren described himself as having revealed a deeper, true identity in the course of his attempted execution. Again Nikko and his followers equate that identity with the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law.

(3) The oneness of the Person and the Law: This means that the object of devotion in terms of the Person and the object of devotion in terms of the Law are one in their essence. The Law is inseparable from the Person, and vice versa. The object of devotion in terms of the Law is the physical embodiment, as a mandala (the Gohonzon), of the eternal and intrinsic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Nichiren writes in his Reply to Kyo'o, "I, Nichiren, have inscribed my life in sumi ink, so believe in the Gohonzon with your whole heart" (WND/412). This passage indicates that Nichiren embodied in the Gohonzon the state of life he enjoyed as the eternal Buddha who personified the Law, so that people could attain the same state of enlightenment. The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings reads: "The 'body that is freely received and used [also, the Buddha of limitless joy]' is none other than the principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life. The Great Teacher Dengyo says: 'A single moment of life comprising the three thousand realms is itself the "body that is freely received and used"; this Buddha has forsaken august appearances. The Buddha who has forsaken august appearances is the Buddha eternally endowed with the three bodies.' Now Nichiren and his followers who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are just this." "The Buddha who has forsaken august appearances" means a Buddha who is no different from an ordinary person in form and appearance.

(4) The core of the Three Great Secret Laws: The Gohonzon, or the object of devotion of the essential teaching, is the core of the Three Great Secret Laws in Nichiren's doctrine and represents the purpose of his life. The Three Great Secret Laws are the object of devotion of the essential teaching, the invocation, or daimoku, of the essential teaching, and the sanctuary of the essential teaching. Here, "essential teaching" refers to the teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, not to the essential teaching (latter half) of the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren expressed the Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo he realized within his own life in these three forms, which correspond to the three types of learning in Buddhism—precepts, meditation, and wisdom. The object of devotion corresponds to meditation, the invocation to wisdom, and the sanctuary to precepts. Sanctuary is a translation of the Japanese word kaidan, which is also translated as "ordination platform." This is a platform where practitioners vow to uphold the Buddhist precepts. In Nichiren's teaching, to embrace the object of devotion is the only precept, and the place where one enshrines the object of devotion and chants the daimoku is called the sanctuary. Again to keep faith in the object of devotion and chant the daimoku while teaching others to chant it is called the invocation. Both the sanctuary and the invocation derive from the object of devotion. Hence the object of devotion is the core of all three. For this reason the Gohonzon, or object of devotion, is also referred to as the One Great Secret Law.

(5) The inscriptions on the Gohonzon: In the center of the Gohonzon are written the Chinese characters "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Nichiren." This indicates the oneness of the Person and the Law. On either side there are characters for the names of beings representing each of the Ten Worlds. At the top of the Gohonzon, the names of Shakyamuni Buddha and Many Treasures Buddha appear respectively to the immediate left and right (when facing the Gohonzon) of these central characters. They represent the realm or world of Buddhahood. The four bodhisattvas—Superior Practices, Boundless Practices, Pure Practices, and Firmly Established Practices—who lead the other Bodhisattvas of the Earth are positioned to the left and right of the two Buddhas. They, along with other bodhisattvas in the second row from the top such as Universal Worthy and Manjushri, represent the realm of bodhisattvas. Also in the second row are persons of the two vehicles—voice-hearers and cause-awakened ones, such as Shariputra and Mahakashyapa—and flanking them are representatives of the realm of heavenly beings, such as Brahma, Shakra, the devil king of the sixth heaven, and the gods of the sun and moon. In the third row appear a wheel-turning king, representing the realm of human beings; an asura king, representing the realm of asuras; a dragon king, representing the realm of animals; the Mother of Demon Children and the ten demon daughters, representing the realm of hungry spirits; and Devadatta, representing the realm of hell. Moreover, the four heavenly kings are positioned in the four corners of the Gohonzon: (again, when facing the Gohonzon) Vaishravana in the upper left, Upholder of the Nation in the upper right, Wide-Eyed in the lower right, and Increase and Growth in the lower left. While all other figures on the Gohonzon are represented in Chinese characters, the names of the wisdom king Craving-Filled and the wisdom king Immovable are written below Vaishravana and Upholder of the Nation respectively in Siddham, a medieval Sanskrit script. Here the wisdom king Craving-Filled represents the principle that earthly desires are enlightenment, and the wisdom king Immovable, the principle that the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana. Other characters on the Gohonzon include the names of Great Bodhisattva Hachiman and the Sun Goddess. All these names express the principles that the Ten Worlds exist within the eternal Buddha's life, and that living beings of the Ten Worlds can attain Buddhahood. Not all of the above names appear on every Gohonzon that is transcribed from the Dai-Gohonzon, but whichever ones do appear represent all of the Ten Worlds. The names of the Great Teacher T'ient'ai and the Great Teacher Dengyo are inscribed in the lower part of the Gohonzon representing those who transmitted the true lineage of Buddhism. There are two inscriptions gleaned from Miao-lo's Annotations on "The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra," which Nichiren used to describe the power of the Gohonzon and the Law it embodies. One, placed in the upper right (facing the Gohonzon), reads, "Those who vex or trouble [the practitioners of the Law] will have their heads split into seven pieces." The other, in the upper left, reads, "Those who give alms [to them] will enjoy good fortune surpassing the ten honorable titles." The ten honorable titles are epithets applied to the Buddha expressing his virtue, wisdom, and compassion. In the lower right is Nichiren's declaration that "This is the great mandala never before known in the entire land of Jambudvipa in the more than 2,230 years since the Buddha's passing.

To me again, what always matters most is what is in your heart. So long as one does not reject the Gohonzon, your Daimoku will always ultimately lead you to it someday. It is based on one's faith, that one can be considered to be a disciple of Nichiren Daishonin. The truth of what determines that faith can only be defined by Nichiren. And that clear definition is unmistakable in his writings.

Faith, Practice and Study

In this letter, I have written my most important teachings. Grasp their meaning and make them part of your life. Believe in the Gohonzon, the supreme object of worship in the world. Forge strong faith and receive the protection of Shakyamuni, Taho and all the other Buddhas. Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if only a single sentence or phrase. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

With my deep respect,
Nichiren

The seventeenth day of the fifth month

I touched on the meaning of "my most important teachings" earlier. This Gosho contains the essence of all of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings: the supreme law and core of Buddhism that must be spread in the Latter Day; the revelation of the Buddha of the Latter Day; the way the Daishonin's disciples should practice their faith. Here he tells us again to understand them deeply and make them part of our lives.

"Make them part of your life" means for us to engrave his teachings in our hearts and practice exactly as this Gosho directs. Our Gohonzon is "the supreme object of worship in the world." I believe that the Daishonin's Buddhism is the very religion that can bring peace to humankind and that the Gohonzon is the crystallization of its essence. The rest depends entirely on our faith. He therefore urges us to "forge strong faith and receive the protection of Shakyamuni, Taho and all the other Buddhas."

Faith is not something that will someday deepen of itself. We must progress positively, with confidence, and no matter what obstacle may hinder us, we must resolve to turn it around and use it to advance another step, with the Gohonzon as our pillar. This requires courage, but if we continue in courageous faith, Shakyamuni, Taho and all the other Buddhas will always protect us.

Shakyamuni's protection is the welling up of Buddha nature --- the most fundamental change that can occur in our lives. Taho's protection appears as a life filled with benefits. The protection of all the other Buddhas means that all those around us will be awakened to the True Law and will, together with us, build an ideal, harmonious human society where peace, equality and justice are at last attained.

"Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism." I hope you have memorized this and all the sentences that follow. I have talked about "practice and study" as stressed in this Gosho on many occasions, so here I will go into the teaching, "Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism." Buddhism exists in practice and study, in the efforts of living people who practice and study it. Buddhism is not contained in sutras, books, or the characters with which they are written. Nor is it found in the temples or other buildings. Buddhism exists and manifests itself only in the life of each person who studies the Gosho and practices his faith strictly according to the Daishonin's teachings. The Soka Gakkai is carrying out a global movement to propagate Buddhism. Its members remain in close contact with each other and concentrate upon developing the faith of others as well as their own. Remember that the true stream of Buddhism only lives and breathes in the association and mutual encouragement of us believers.

"You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others." This is the principle of jigyo and keta: to practice Buddhism for ourselves and also teach it to other people. We must become happy ourselves, and at the same time make others happy.

"Both practice and study arise from faith." Faith is the basis of both practice and study, and faith is always manifested as practice and study. These three --- faith, practice and study --- become the most important objective of the Soka Gakkai.

"Teach others to the best of your ability, even if only a single sentence or phrase." This tells us to do shakubuku to the full extent of our capabilities and to the degree that our circumstances allow, even if we can only teach others a single sentence or phrase of Buddhism.

Hi Everyone (Who I truly cherish and respect)

And especially Easy who like many of us are going through (see if I can say this right) difficult, strainfull-stressfull, times......being his mom is fighting cancer for one. Then comes along me saying ignorant things about the Gohonzon.....not good....negative it was.

I see all this thread as a "practice of positive thinking". I thought about that yesterday at work, and of course I felt bad over Easy. It is hard to find the proper words when your not PTD or Weird or Easy. I'm so thankful that you don't dislike me for "power outages"...LOL

Positive thinking, that is having true FAITH. That's how I see it.

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo gives me courage. When I couple that with understanding and compassion there is love and respect for everything that's living, even the basic daily undertakings of living life. All that makes a beautiful rose in Bloom.

All this reminds me of mothers, growing up by their hand and nuturing us until we can stand and start to walk through life on our own with her perpetual guidance,......then watching her suffer through what I've always seen as a transition period between life & death. My mother died on Mothers Day '76. It was so ironic.

All those authors were right about the future, big corporations taking over, drugs to control everyone, and technology to make everything easier and faster......nothing is basic or "normal" anymore......I've become complacent. I've been really noticing it lately with myself. It was Easy and his mom's condition that I started to put my heart back into it.

Hi Everyone (Who I truly cherish and respect)

And especially Easy who like many of us are going through (see if I can say this right) strainfull-stressfull, but well worth the fight to have courage coupled with understanding and compassion with love and respect, daily undertakings of living life,.........all that makes living a beautiful rose in bloom.( having a mother, growing up alot by her hand and nuturing us until we can stand and start to walk trough life on our own with her perpetual guidance,......then watching her suffer through what I've always seen as a transition period between life & death, happiness can be lost momentarily like little tornados that rake us down......like me I have to get up and keep going.....gotta walk the dog....be back!

I remember

Like I said, I may never have met Desi, but I sure do love him!

Much love and deepest respect to all of you! Especially you Weird!

"Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbour doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood. Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection. Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life. This is what I have taught my disciples morning and evening, and yet they begin to harbour doubts and abandon their faith. Foolish men are likely to forget the promises they have made when the crucial moment comes."

Some how I missed this before.

Some how I missed this before.

(to be continued)

This really helps me, Thomas. I have to admit, I have been confused and Fearful of the fact that "The Object of Devotion" is a piece of paper of course with Nichirens figures, drawings, and words., which I do respect highly.....I just perfer to chant on my walks in Nature.....there again to the insentient trees, flowers and sky.......hmmm, that is ironic.

Desi and Friends,

You know what Desi, but I will still do anything I can to help you get the Gohonzon in your home because of what its done for me my good friend. You like Babba know me from this site for many years, perhaps we even engaged each other prior to this site, but since I've known you I've appreciated your presence. Your kind words are greatly appreciated and your sincerity is even more special in my humble opinion. I consider your mother my own and dealing with the struggle of my mother being in terrible pain is just traumatic.

Sometime in our discussions on this thread and in private messages we say some things that would have been better said in a face to face conversation, but since we always don't have that luxury we do what we must. I saw the suffering in your post. I know what you felt when some people tried to come over to your home. I've learned through many people and especially my chanting grower friends that I have to help ALL MY FRIENDS receive the Gohonzon. Whether a friend has a Gohonzon is one thing, and whether one 'uses' their Gohonzon is another! I'm not really telling anyone, "hey get a Gohonzon because its an ornament.." NOPE! I'm telling you and everyone else that this is our club and we only have one tool and one phrase. The tool is the Gohonzon and the phrase that pays is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! (I mean tool as in functional device of the best kind)

Ohh dearest friends how we all have struggled in this world. Endurance is a common trait we share. Those who endure, can be us. However, as chanting growers we are mandated to continue to advance and progress courageously. Shakubuku is direct refutation of slander or evil in our lives. Such great good is difficult to apply in a subtle way because by doing so you diminish the validity and reality of this practice. There is nothing outside our lives that appears when you chant other than your desires which originate with the heart of the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Thus Come One Nichiren Daishonin. The desires I speak of are the hopes we share for working together in this life to accomplish kosen-rufu. I know each of you and many who haven't posted in a while, have been diligently chanting for kosen-rufu. We are always chanting to bring about a better environment for us and others to continue to be happy. Chanting for my mother's health is in essence chanting for your mother's eternal happiness. The connection between the heart and desire and intent of Nichiren Diashonin may seem external to our lives to some, but by fusing your life with the Gohonzon through sincere prayer you truly discover that you had the ultimate environment within you always.

Only a person as good as Socal or Bonzo or Babbabud has been able to overcome the three obstacles and the four devils and continue to chant in the face of all adversity. The same holds true for PasstheDoobie, myself, you, that other person you know showing actual proof and pretty much everyone trying in their own right to use the fullest potential of their own spirit and continue to be the great persons they are no matter what. Desi is such a noble friend, who else could say such kind words to his brother in the north? Who else cares enough to let us know in a candid way about their struggle? I know of other chanting growers like Desi who are my friends and are winners like you!

Ohh the pleasure I gain from reading such elaborate and simple posts! The tough words and softs sentences really touch my heart! The recent support has been amazing, but reality is my mother is very ill and suffering. Our chanting is lessening this and I'm still doing my best to be the best son I can be. My mother is grateful for my efforts and I can only thank my support system (all of you) for genuinely sticking with me through it all.

Weird, thanks again for caring so much. You're words are appreciated and your heart is pure. I hope you can put aside the intellectual interpretations that bother you or cause you encumbrances and just know that I'll support you no matter how you choose to chant. You're absence was missed and there is no way I could answer the questions you reserved for PasstheDoobie because you only sought his answers and deserved the benefit of that. I think you know Chase also is a big supporter and has really been practicing stronger than ever lately. I'm sure he could help you go to a meeting whenever you're ready, or you could always come this way.

PasstheDoobie, keep it coming partner. I'll come to see you no matter when or where it is. With that said, see you soon!

Mrs.Babba and Babba love you guys!

Everyone keep keeping on and know I'm right here supporting you in daimoku all the time. You best believe I'm always chanting for the chanting growers and if you feel like one you must be one!

truly yours,
Easy
