420?

Since April 20 is long past I will say this now. I'll probably still get flamed but really don't care. No biggy here anyway.

4:20 actually relates to a time of day that historically was toke time for a small group in Southern California back in the 70's. It has been bastardized to mean a lot of things from somebody who likes weed to the date in April. Now don't get me wrong. Any reason to toke up is good with me. I just think this sort of rings with things like calling cannabis ; pot, dope, even marijuana, and some other stupid shite. April 20 was Hitler's birthday. The day has been celebrated by blowing up a federal building in Oklahoma and killing high school kids in Columbine. That huge oil leak in the Gulf happened on 4/20. So celebrate? Do we really want our movement associated with that sort of crap?

But again, any excuse to toke is good by me. No biggy. It's just that I think that one's a stretch, and not so good.

.....seriously though I don't think that any of these things have to do with cannabis and don't understand how anyone could assume a connection more than a coincident.

The way I see it, Hitler was born on a certain day- Oklahoma guys possibly chose this date for that reason.- Columbine kids chose the date due to the Oklahoma bombing date. Nothing to do with herbs. Small 420 rallys have been going on in Boulder since the 70's and I don't think anyone probably even knew that was hitler's bday then.

And the date of the oil spill?.... c'mon man.

Nobody " celebrating " is celebrating anything but cannabis on this date. Most of the events/coincidences you are pointing out are mostly American events and 420 is an international celebration. Its already documented on wiki that it's celebrated in 3 continents.

Some old burnouts even say it twas Jerry himself who organized the first major 420 event in San Jose, 1979.:tiphat:

I like 4:20.
It's obviously an American thing and being Irish it means nothing to me.

But the reason I like it is because I have several friends in America who do celebrate 4:20 and it's a day where you send a nice greeting and smoke a joint in their honor because they cant be there with you.

It's a day like any other but if it brings people closer together then it's a good day and should be celebrated.

Think of it as a bit like xmas.

And if you have been bad it's a lump of soapbar in your 4:20 stocking :)

Edit:
Speaking of Santa and pardon the obvious pun but it high time you Americans elected a patron saint of 4:20 :)

I was told that 420 was used by police in cali to radio in a mj related incident,as 187 is used for murder-shootings. I'm from the east so forgive me- 420 = light up

Well said!

4:2o really seems to be taking root here in America's heartland. On 4:20 I was in a gas station about closing time when somebody said something about still having time to get home and celebrate 4:20

We all laughed and it was a magical moment because everyone understood.

4/20 was being celebrated before Columbine, The Oklahoma City Bombing or the Gulf Oil Spill. Has any other holiday or day of celebration ever been changed to a new date to avoid associations with things that happened on the same date well after a day of celebration was established?

That's all very funny. What date do you suggest sir? I'm good with any day really, but 4-20 just kind of rolls of the tounge, y'know? We do it up nice in the dirty dirty...nice cook out, tons of music, the "hash gauntlet", brownies and blazing saddles! It's the one day a year that I can totally get away and get away with it.

Do we really want our movement associated with that sort of crap?
Kind of a bizarre question, since nobody is making that association that I've ever heard (other than you of course), and if I did hear someone making those kinds of associations I'd think they were either schizophrenic or a garden-variety troll.
