You want to put a really hot light in a plastic tub? I would have to call you a f-ing moron. Do not do this. Build a proper box so you don't burn the building down.

Where would you mount the ballast? How would you cool the tub so it didn't melt? How would you not see the light shining through the plastic? Who the hell grows in rubbermaids and expects a decent harvest? Seems silly to me to half ass a grow operation. Sound like you haven't thought this out enough.

I am assuming you have looked at the red greenery tubs. If so, I have a friend who managed to put a 150watt into (2) 18 gallon tubs. Having the plastic shield separating the lights from the grow chamber was 100% essential though. He also had a pretty decent fan blowing directly across the HID. It will work if you have enough ventilation, however this will make it leak lots of light, so it will probably need to be kept in a closet

ooh, have you thought of the gassing issues?

one day youll poke your head in, look at your plants, curl up into a fetal position and suck your thumb.

Dont let the bogeyman scare tactics keep you away from your goal.
You can certainly run a 150 in a rubbermaid tub. I have a passive cool tube, and I can comfortably hold my hand on the tube just below the 150w bulb without any discomfort. If offgassing was an issue, everyone with tubblers would be in a fetal position.

tubblers = self water cooled... if you were to use a tub for an unsheilded hps/mh of any serious wattage youd heat it far more than you would heat the tub at the base

I'm going to bet my 200+ watt CFLs generates more heat than a 150 watt HID. I've been using a 30gal tub, and I'm able to keep the lights on temp under 80. I think it could be done, but then again don't you have to keep them a good distance from the bulb when using HID? There's not much height for you to play with here.

There are plenty of people running 8 and 10 42watt bulbs in the 30 gallon rubbermaids and I haven't heard of anyone with offgassing problems
