What's new

risk a truck or buy a prius?

Hi. I am in the market for a new vehicle, but I'm concerned about oil and gasoline. My hobby is boating, but I haven't bought a boat yet (been using a friends forever).

I'm basically struggling as to whether or not it's wise to buy a truck and a boat in this day and age. If it's going to 8 bucks a gallon and a massive depression, obviously buying a truck and a boat is a bad idea. But for me, nothing is better than boating. Nothing.

Tough decision. What would you do? Risk a boat and a truck or go with the Prius and find a new hobby?

If a boat is the only reason you want a truck, buy the prius. Rent a truck from home depot or a friend if you ever get a boat.

Thanks for your opinion bro.

The boat is a sure thing if I go the truck route. I've got the cash, so I will definitely be getting one immediately if I decide to go that way.

Another consideration I had is just paying 250 a month to leave my boat at the marina. Granted, that seriously restricts my fishing and ability to take the boat on vacations with the family, but it might be a reasonable solution.

hmm..

You bring up an excellent point about renting a truck as well. It's not like I'm screwed if I want to take it on a trip.

Thanks again for your post.

if you always dock at the same place, you might as well rent a slip and just leave the boat there. rent/borrow a truck to get it there and back if seasonal weather wouldn't let you leave it there year round. it's just going to take up driveway/garage space at your place anyway.

edit: you just said all that while i was typing, so i'm gonna go play with Mavis Beacon.

i got the perfect solution, House Boat. No truck, no mortgage. okay maybe not.

depends on your job bro! i gotta friend in Reno that just bought a new dodge diesel. i think hes crazy! he put down like 20K and owes 25 more. and he is in the laborers union. there is less work in reno than anywhere on the planet, and he bought a truck.

i think the economy is gonna tank hard even more thanks to the fucking oil barrons, but that's just me.

if you are a mortgage attorney or something, then no worries.

If you have plenty of extra money buy the boat and the truck. When gas goes up,the price for the boat and truck go down.
Buyers market.
Make sure you have PLENTY of extra money if your buying a boat. I have a couple of friends that were proud boat owners.
One called it a hole in the water, that you fill with money.
The other said BOAT stands for Bust Out Another Thousand.

Thanks guys. I agree with both of the above. I waited and waited until I could buy my boat with cash. In my opinion, financing a boat= you're begging for financial trouble. I don't have tons of money by any stretch but I have enough to buy a boat cash.

Boating is completely and utterly retarded unless you absolutely adore it. And I do!

Everybody's different but I'm a big fan of having multiple/extra vehicles. I'd pick up the Prius, the boat, and a cheap old truck off craigslist. You'd be amazed at the sweet old monsters you can pick up for 2-3G. :)

Multiple vehicles are also awesome to have because if one is ever broken down, you have another vehicle to drive. That frees you up to wait till you have the time and inclination to fix it yourself, and save a lot of money that way. An old ford or chevy truck is easy to maintain yourself....

Have your cake and eat it too :)

IMO, these are not the times for unnecessary spending. We are all in that boat. ;)
Granted, some folks are better positioned to come out of this well than others, but generally speaking, common folks need to stay focused on priorities.

Three years ago, I loved my expensive hobbies. I was very passionate about them, there's no mistaking that. Fast forward, they have been either removed from my life or placed at the bottom of my list. There are more important things to hold on to right now for me, like a college education for my children, keeping a roof over my head and eating.

I feel that these days it's crucial to think long term when it comes to plopping down your hard earned dough. I know too many people who loved to spend their money while their mortgage remained. Sadly many of those people spent that money decking out their banks home to the 10's, and now they remember it was the banks home, because they no longer live in it.

Love your life, live your life, but know when you can afford something and when you cannot.
Only you know what you can afford, no one here does.

Peace

Prius is a scam, you'll getter better mileage and more power from a VW Golf Turbo Diesel, depending on the size of your boat it would probably tow it anyway.

errr no. Prius gets 50 mpg. 44-46 in the winter driving like an animal in my experience. Golf gets half that, and diesel costs 40 cents or more per gallon. I agree that is much more fun to drive, however.

I have ranger 621 vs ambitions. In fact I had bought one and then returned it for warranty reasons (attempted scam by a dealership. PM me if you're curious who. Shady kunts have been reported and I'm considering a class action).

Thanks for your opinion here. Although I love fishing, I decided to keep it on shore and from the kayak. I simply can't square all this extra money in the pockets of the oil companies. I decided upon the Prius. I like the stability of knowing that even if gas prices go insane, my pocket will stay relatively unchanged.

As others have mentioned in passing, the alpha male in me digs a truck and has second thoughts of a Prius. Alas, the challenge of fighting of a musky in a kayak seems a bit manly, I must say.:)

How tall are you? At 6 feet I find the Prius to be cramped. 15 minutes around town is fine. More than 30 minutes becomes uncomfortable. Cross country borders on painful.
