Best Intro-Level Hydro Literature?

Hi All,

I'm writing with the hope that some of you can recommend me some good beginner hydroponics literature/books. I'm one of those types that loves detailed text, graphs and photos.

I recently was awarded some work with a hydroponics lifestyle magazine and would like to start learning as much as possible about the hydro medium in particular.

I've only had experience with micro soil grows and have been on a long hiatus, so my dirt is dry and seeds are closed. I want to get back into it but my current living/life situation does not permit it. In the mean time I want to study study study, so eventually I can push some big buds out of the closet again!

Thanks! Peace!

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but you may be better served to look through the Hydro/Organic Hydro forums. Although, 99 and 44/100's of the posts will probably be anecdotal you might find a reference or two that will lead to a nugget of published material. The problem with that is that you will probably have to sift through dozens of threads to find that one nugget.

As for me, a timid foray into hydro involves Hempy buckets and the Lucas formula and is the limit of my experience. I wish I could have been more help.

Good luck on your journey!

search
hydroton
coco
rockwool
hempy
those will be the 4 most used mediums in hydro

Read the dyi threads that talk about the construction and operation of various hydro setups (ebb and flow, NFT, aero, DWC, under current, etc. etc.)

These threads have tons of info and will give you a decent understanding of how the systems operate.

Any of the free (sponsored) mags in a hydro store will give you a base to work from. Start with the bare-bones Lucas or Maxibloom and begin recording things you did well, things you failed at, and things you can improve on. Experiment, learn, read, tweak as you go.

Hands-on experience is far more valuable than reading, which is just a supplement. You will learn at a faster rate.

Have fun!

No contract yet. I'm doing pro bono work - and proud of it. I see this as my golden ticket; a chance to hone my skills as a plant-centered writer and as a personal (at the moment) grower. I'm still using soil, but I know after this I'll be ready to possibly make some moves. I just want to break into the industry and I've got skills as a writer and as a soil grower/manual laborer. Hoping to make some good connections and make myself useful to those who already know what they're doing. Something I've been dreaming of for about 9 years now - since I was 13.

Thanks for the tips guys. ICMAG is its own encyclopedia, I know, there's just something about having physical copies of literature that I like. Been crunched with time and scheduling recently, hope to be more active on the boards and in the closet again soon.

Peace!

That book is terrible.. I don't see the point of "learning" something that you are just going to have to learn the right way down the line...

You said published results right? Organic Hydro, look for What About Bob.It's old like myself but believe it will serve the purpose you need without the need to search through the science projects

If you need anything further I'm a simple pm away.

Have Fun

"how to hydroponics" by Keith Roberto
available as a digital download (not free) or in print at http://www.howtohydroponics.com/

I'll second this, I got to leaf through the hard copy (which is pretty poor btw, apparently there was ZERO effort in formatting the printout for the book). It's a fairly concise explanation of the bare basics of hydroponics, covers a few different sorts of systems along with their construction, and overall isn't terrible at all. I probably wouldn't pay for the book myself unless I was looking at an early edition and they've fixed the format issues.

There are as many ways to do hydro as there are creative potheads with access to water, but it's not a bad read to just get started.

What dont you like about the book?

I can't give specifics because I haven't read it in forever, but it has a lot of misinformation..

I would rather tell people to learn it right the first time than learn it mostly right and then have to learn later that a lot of things were wrong.

The problem with that book especially is that since it is all professional and published new growers take it as bible and it is hard to convince otherwise. Kinda like how people who first start growing actually believe things the hydro store guy says because he is in a position of authority..
