Find yourself a nice strong piece of deadfall and fashion a walking stick. Make it to mid-waist, makes life easier on the trail and too many uses to list. Do most of my hiking around Yellowstone and always carry a weapon, don't know if you can on that trail, anyways enjoy it while you can!

^yes another wonderful suggestion, a walking stick is great, but 2 adjustable light weight hiking poles are even better. I forget that many people don't use hiking poles still for some reason. They really help. you will notice the difference within a mile, going up or down. they also help prevent twisted ankles, and steady you in steam crossings which all have slippery rocks.

also another big one is CHAP STICK! :)

I have not done Whitney yet, but eventually I will get there. The biggest mountain I have done is Long's Peak.

lots of good advice

but this is the AT.....you do not need a GUN....unless you feel the need to go concealed carry everywhere you walk in your daily life.

secondarily, bears on the AT are Black in variety. in almost all cases in VA you will be seeing only one end of them--that being their butts as they run away from you.

one more suggestion for your feet. try a good pair of running shoes. unless you hiking in snow.

finally have fun and make sure you dont use your name Professor Sublime as your trail name.

peace

^The north east sucks for gun laws so he might be right, even though I still think a gun is just a good thing to have in the back country period.

I've got a pair of gortex Merrel's, feel like tennis shoes.

Asolo TPS 520. BEst boots I have ever hiked in. expensive but well worth it.

Also, Ive done my share of backpacking in the past, and have learned one thing. If you dont think you will use it, leave it at home. Every little ounce of weight adds up to extra pounds which you will notice. Ive learned over the years to pretty much leave the electronics at home, and even books, though I will bring a journal type book to write down my thoughts.

Some things that I find indispensable for backpacking.

Leki Trekking poles: Helps to maintain balance, posture, and pace.

Water purififer.

Camp Stove: MSR dragonfly or peak 1. Get one that uses white gas.

Clothing: get nylon or whatever is the popular quick drying material these days. leave the cotton based products at home. Also, cargo pats with removable legs are great.

Tents: Mountain Hardware or Big Agnes.

The military pack you mentioned is not bad, but a commercial backpack will probably allow you to carry more stuff and be more comfortable.

Have fun. Im jealous.

Merrels are excellent shoes. I have had a pair of water shoes made by merrel for years, they have been out of the country, hiked mountains, been my seining shoes, kayak shoes, and been my every day walkers on and off. I actually have been trying to tear them up so I can justify buying a new pair.

If you get the chance stop around Harpers Ferry. Lots of history in that area.

A/T is gorgeous right now. Here's a few shots not far from there;

Anyone got any gear recommendations? Looking for super-light stuff to put on the wish list for my go at the AT.
