How Much Soil Volume for Veg?

I didn't mean to imply that rootbound condition was always bad, just that it slows vegging. Frequent repotting is not a great idea unless you have the skills to do it with no shock at all, which is difficult to teach online in words. If your technique results in shock, then it's better to leave in one pot. It's just growing, all methods work once you get your chops down.

I'm less worried about shock, and more concerned with making sure I'm providing good habitat.

The containers slated to receive transplants here are actually put together with an empty placeholder container the same size as the container that is going in. That way, I am not tearing up any habitat at transplant time. I really prefer to go directly from rooting to a full size container that is very generous. Cuts that go straight in have a chance to comingle with other species, whereas transplants have monoculture root balls.

btw, I just had a cut planted in thick clover double in size - in 3 days. It went in last week with barely any roots.

Unfortunately in this grow I have to transplant twice...

Current: Small seed starter tray with Promix
Next: larger 1 gallon pails through veg and sexing
Last: 5 gallon pails to finish in

I don't have the room to plant all candidates in 5 gallon pails, and I can only take a few females to finish.

I sure hope I don;t screw up the grow with all this transplanting...

You won't. I thin xplanting frequently is a good thing for many varieties. Sour bubble is the one I am thinking of. Make sure u keep up with it. You will probably need to top feed I. The flats and the 1 gal to keep em there for longer. I like biotone or pom all purpose (not guanos. I'm no good with em). Try to veg in the final pot for two weeks before flipping lights

On a side note. My mandalas are getting big. Should I wait till the new moon (may3rd) or just flip em now? I didn't plant plant by the moon or anything. But wad just thinking

/end hijack.

don't sweat it rrog, I just did my test runs the same way you are doing it (minus the promix).

That's how you look for keepers.

this one finished in a #1 smart pot. my soil isn't meant to be used that way, but I got lots of smoke anyway. Just had to water every day.

Now, I let the blumats do it.

You offer hope and I appreciate that. That's a good tidbit there. I'll leave the plants in the Promix for two weeks total. Then into the one gallon pots for two more weeks. Then hit the lights. That only adds one week of veg to my plans. Hopefully they don't get too tall for my SCROG.

Thanks again!

I start and keep them in beer cups for a month or more before taking them to the great outdoors. Some 12 inches or so high. If you use a small pot and your roots are packed tight when you transplant. Just jently massage the roots and loosen them up. They will be just fine in the larger pot.

Thanks ijim! I think Tacoe would agree.

Thanks again MadL. I will have to read up on transplanting tips...

oh, I forgot the pic. Mandala 1 test grow finished in a #1 smart pot. Madliberated currently has a cut of this scrogged out and flipped on sunday. It's a 4 foot square canopy, so this should be fun. I just love the smoke from this plant. It's an exquisite daytime high.

Dont let these peeps fool you, were not splitting the atom here, we're just growing some weed. What you posted above will work just fine.

Nothing like the nitrogen from a legume like clover or alfalfa to kick a vegging plant into high gear. I did some in a corn field that was just rotated from an alfalfa field. Legumes store nitrogen in the ground for the next cycle. Had a hell of a time unloading all the unexpected bud.

yeah, I'm still waiting for the downside. The cannabis seems to not care one bit that the container is crowded. And this is all before the clover is mature enough to have good rhizobium infection, so there is more to it than fixing N.

I did pick up some mike, since biotone stiffs you on arbuscular myco. I figure I can mix it with clover seeds and broadcast. So any cannabis that shows up can get infected by the same fungus.

Haha right on! :good:

People generally have a strong tendency to over complicate things...buy all sorts of fancy fertilizer additives, transplant a few times etc. just adding more to what can go wrong.

I think at this point I have to admit my passion for growing weed is getting a reacharound from my love of landscaping.

also suffering from no-garden-outside disease.

Get a table top garden or terrarium. You can still have all the fun just do in on a small scale, I've been reading up on bonsai and it is a fascinating hobby.

lol I don't have a room in the place without plants of some kind. I have a room just for plants. I'm getting ready to install ceiling hooks to fit in more.

What a super helpful thread. I'm amazed at everyone's patience with my amateur questions. I have taken pages of notes and am so, so grateful for all of the extremely valuable information.

Thanks again! Wish I could have you all over for a party

.....

You are not asking stupid questions and everyone had to start @ some point.

Always keep in mind the more simple you do it the less can go wrong.

People germinate seeds in paper towels, transplant them 3,4 and I even have read in some post 5 times.

They buy a whole bunch of products because of fancy names those products are being advertised with or because promises made in those products descriptions.

When you get a chance...check out my grow thread.
I use ProMix HP and one fertilizer. Of course one for vegging & one for flowering.

Yielded almost 9lbs doing everything just about as simple as one can do it.
