4 wire = 2 hots, 1 neutral, 1 ground

3 wire = 2 hots, 1 ground.

4 wire allows you to split the 240 circuit in to 120 volts if needed, no neutral means no 120 volts, but you can still wire in 240 v plugs.

Ok don't need the 120's at all so I will just leave the neutral one unwired and just wire the three wires I have as you say.

Thanks a lot this saves a lot of trouble.

Yup just clean cut the stripped copper end, give it a good wrap with electrical tape to prevent it from becoming energized and wire it up color for color. And Im sure you know this already but just do not connect the wires from the 120 volt receptacles to the 240v supply just disconnect them and cap them off.

for 240 volt it doesnt matter which color red goes under each screw as each leg is 120volts to ground. But generally yes, it goes x,y,z or black, red, blue (or white).

Ok I had the following wires: Black, White, Green

I put green and white in their corresponding colors and black in Y. If I plug it in am I going to die?

In this scenario the white in the main power cable will be your red, just be sure not to connect the white wire from the 120 recepts as that is intended to be a neutral.

What I did. Will not plug it in until I hear its fine. The screw corresponding with W is silverish/white, G is green screw, X, and Y are gold screws.

Alright if anyone is ever as ignorant as I am concerning electricity this thread is a safe thread to follow lol...

I turned my 30 amp breaker off plugged the powerbox timer in stood a ways away near the breaker turned it on and damn if no lightning or explosions of electricity happened. I survived and the deathstar is now operational!

Thanks very much for everyone's advice in this thread.
