Can We Please Stop Calling It "Medical Marijuana"?

Marijuana is just a slang term (seized upon by the prohibitionistas) for the alleged sexual stamina its consumers possess, enough to satisfy both Maria and Juanita. Most Mexicans called it Mota. When Congress outlawed the new demon drug from Mexico called marijuana, interviews Congressmen said they had zero idea that they were prohibiting hemp.

Some good points for cannabis, but to me it somehow smacks of the politically correct "flavor of the moment" for such things as slang, race names, mentally-challenged people or whatever else someone has decided must be offensive. I started smoking pot over 40 years ago, and while most of my use these days really is medicinal, I still almost burst out laughing when I hear someone in a dispensary refer to one of their products as "really nice medicine".

No one hates "political correctness" more than me.
But this has nothing whatsoever to do with political correctness or "whatever else someone has decided must be offensive". It was called marijuana in the law to appeal to people's xenophobia and racism. So why would we use the term that those who oppress us used, when it's actual name is cannabis?

Hehe, I still call it reefer once a day, and I'm not that old. The word just makes me giggle inside a little bit.

Pot is what you grow cannabis in. I've always thought the name 'marijuana' had a bit of a negative vibe too, we could change our terminology but it wouldn't make much difference outside of this site

This site has a lot of influence!
It's by far the best site and best source of info on the net. Maybe we could conjure the spirit of Dr. Jay, and see what he thinks....

lol ^ . i think marijuana sounds like a drug and cannabis sounds like a medicinal herb. but heady nibblage just sounds super :)

Hi,

I agree we should not refer to our favorite plant by the drug slang which was given to it( Marijuana ). But I don't think it is normal to refer to a plant by its genus name either. People don't refer to plants in general by there scientific genus-species name, so why would we choose this?

This is not to say I don't refer to it as Cannabis in general, but it is a little weird. I usually refer to my plant/medicine by the strain name which was given by the breeders.

Peace

US government did a great job with the Bob Hope generation convincing them if they smoked pot they would go out and kill people like Charles Mason.

As this generation passes so will the myths. Biggest problem now is big pharma buying off politicians.

Just to let you know, Bob Hope was cool with weed...and Bing Crosby was a toker-- :tiphat:

I,ve always called it Smoke...I guess because everyone I know smokes.
With strangers in ear shot range maybe they think you are asking someone for a cigarette when you say got any smoke. Its better than saying do you have any cannabis, herb, weed, marijuana, pot, and so on

I kinda prefer to call it weed. I don't think that diminishes the sacred mind-centering power that I receive from it. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It's therapeutic potential should be obvious enough without sticking a label on it. It is to anyone with an objective viewpoint.

Some of you guys are really missing the point.
It's not what you call it among friends. I don't call it "cannabis" among friends.
It's what people call it in front of the public, on TV, during rallies, on public forums, in order to get away from the stigma put on it by our government oppressors. "Marijuana" has a negative stigma, put on it by the those who deemed us criminals and want to put us in jail.
It doesn't matter what you call it among friends.
They don't want to put you in jail.

When I got out of High School in the Eighties, I sought out a real education.

I started with "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer. That was an eye opener for sure.

All these years later, we're making progress, but that bogus name still stands for some reason.

If you think calling it, "medical marijuana" is offending, then you'ed be disscusted by what pepole in my neck of the woods call it! "kill", "bomb", "dro", "dank", to name a few. It's call everything but, "medical marijuana", or "cannabis!" Even shop owners call it everything elles but, "medical marijuana!"

I guess things will never change!

The only stigmas are the things you choose to help propogate as them. We don't bandy about "African American" anymore, do we? No, it's trite. We are fine with saying "Black" now because that is what progression means, coming to terms with other people assigning a derogatory value upon something and choosing to deny it.

Wow! This is incredible.
This discussion is not about the many nicknames for cannabis. We all know there are many names for it. And we all know we don't call it "cannbis" among ourselves, as in "pass me the cannabis bro". There is nothing wrong with those other nicknames or slang names.
This is about the misnomer "Medical marijuana", which ostensibly describes legitimate (think legal) forms of cannabis. Since it is legitimate and legal it should not be known by the name hung on it by those who criminalized it. It should be known, IMHO, by the name "medical cannabis", thereby rejecting their name which has negative connotations.

So what you call it in private, is different than what you proclaim in Public?? But you don't claim to be, "Politically Correct"??
I understand what you are saying...I really do-- I also had Bruce Margolin telling me the same thing-- So I asked him who he would like me to be like?? I got no answer--
I will be myself, til the day I die--Sometimes I call it Cannabis, sometimes, Ganja...Pot, Weed...Marijuana...but it always means the same thing--:tiphat:
