Thanks red and I am loving jungle life so far. If you liked that pic let me know what you think of the last pic in this post. :)

So I was having an issue AGAIN with roots causing slow drainage. See if you can tell why from this pic. If you look closely you will see where the root made a plug inside the drain tube.

And the (pun intended) root cause of the issue is godamned explosive root growth.

Yup, that's a mighty fine root navel... I think this is mostly caused by the bucket inside a bucket.... This is a good idea but it really limits the actual root space causing them to grow more dense and plug the works.... You need 2" drains or more to really pull that off. I think the sweet spot for 5 gal buckets is a 10" pot, this allows more than 3X the root space so they don't get so compact down by the drains... Anyway, just my opinion...

Everyone has seen this pic but I will post it again to show what I mean, look at how much more space the roots have so they don't have to be so dense by the drains. I am getting away with 2X 1/2" drains...

Yes, I forgot to mention, very nice work MC, your ladies are exploding for sure... I think you are going to need some dense foam aquarium pre filters on your drains. The roots will still grow through them eventually but it will take alot longer. Either that, or, install large enough drains to encourage the roots to follow them all the way to the sump...

Maj,

either you give them a re-fitting with larger drains like Aero said , or you could raise the bucket level and add some filter pads, i think this way would keep them happy until you get to remodel next round, hey these are good problems at least ;)

cheers

Thanks guys, next round I am planning on three drains per bucket. I swapped the lower buckets with new ones on two plants and they now have two drains each.

I am running 10" net pots, I think the 6" kill yield because the root mass just can't get as big. I am sure the bucket is full of roots just like in the pic from Aero plus the roots below growing into the second bucket. I will get root porn pics at harvest but I can't lift the net pots because the roots are grown through the bottom of the top buckets.

I have never heard of the foam aquarium pre filters, I will have to look into them. I just want to be able to make it through a cycle without having to break down and remove roots mid grow so they would be fine if they lasted 10-15 weeks.

Anyone know of an easy way to run 3/4" drains from the bucket to a 1.5" or 2" drain line? I originally cobbled something together but it was crap.

Yes good problems to have :) I am happy

It doesn't really matter what size the drain is or what you put in front of it, it will eventually have roots filling it up. Run the drain line at the top of the bucket, or at least an overflow at the top is the only way I can see that works. With that said I'm running a single 3/4" drain per bucket with no over flow protection. Worked fine the last few runs but this time the plants are bigger and keep plugging the drains. I've had roots run 4ft down them and into my res. If it over flows it's not a real problem for me, just inconvenient. If you can't have a flood then always use an overflow high up.

Thanks gb, my helper friend and I were talking about doing water lever drains earlier tonight but what do you do about draining the system? I could do two low and one high drain per bucket. I have been kicking around many ideas for next round. If 24" PVC piping wasn't so expensive I would get crazy.

Yes, one or two drains low and one high in case the bottom ones get plugged works well. With the drain high up the roots pretty much never get to it.

Nice setup! I see those plants are wasting no time. I'll be curious to see how the party cup turns out. But don't do it on my account should you prefer to transplant.

I plan to scrog the same thing in a micro cab next month. Judging from your results so far, should be a pretty full cab when I'm done. Even minimal veg can be deceiving with monsters like these.

yeah lets get another round of updates in here Major!

On it red, just got done playing an online game with a friend and having a smoke and I will go snap some pics after I do a little work in the room first. Maybe even a video.

I only ended up with three females in dirt so they all went into 3 gallon smart pots. I will get some good shots of the dirty girls for ya. The ones in dirt are much smaller and I think could be managed in your space but I think they are only small because they were left in the solo cups so long and had minimal light. I think they would be monsters in your hands.

Back in an hour or so.

More dirty pictures in my album

I also put up a new video and highlighted the dirt ones.

The one I broke over is doing well and is forming a nice fat knuckle at the break. I need to break at least a couple more of them over in the next few of days.

I couldn't get all the pics to load but saw ~2/3 of them. The vid also looks great. The toe tapper sounds like it's off the Barney Miller soundtrack, very catchy.

You really got the dirty girls under control. Nice work.
