Knowing When It's Time To FLush

Hi Everyone- Quick question, how do you know when it's time to start the flush? I read that when the first pistils start turning brown, that's when you start the two week flushing process.

Is this a tried and true method? If not, what are some other indicators that it's about that time?

Thanks!

if you know your strains lineage, it's really helpful to count the days. if i know i'm running a 70 day strain, i'll start flushing with just mollases around day 56 and then straight RO water a week later until the trichs are right. hope this helps ...

I can't tell you anything about the strain. I have to go by appearance on this one. So I was watching this video that said when the hairs start turning brown is a pretty good indication. As well as when the colas get top heavy and begin leaning.

This is my second soil grow. I fucked up my first grow during the drying process. So I want to make sure I do everything perfectly this time.

Get a Jewelers Loupe or a hobby hand held microscope from Radio Shack and watch your trichs.

When they get 90% cloudy (personal preference) I start my flush.

Good luck

Oh, welll since you have a microscope man. It is all preference "mostly" when it comes to time to chop. Theres clear, cloudy and amber trichs. If they are mostly clear, then do NOT harvest, if they are mostly cloudy with some amber, this is a acceptible time to harvest and you can even wait later till they are mostly amber with a few cloudy as this will give a more body high as opposed to cloudy/clear trichs that give more a head buzz.

Hey Ursus- I'm pretty much set on knowing when to harvest. What I'm talking about in this thread is when to start the flushing period, as in the 2-3 week period BEFORE harvest.

As far as flushing, I'm more versed on hydro, not so much soil. But yea dude, those scopes are the shit. Couldn't live without them.

I got one. Thanks! That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for.

I should have added that with that timetable I would expect to see 95%cloudy/5% amber, once again PP,...if not, they flush another week.

;)

basically take a look at your plant and decide whether you think it's indica, sativa, or a hybrid. most strains that aren't obviously sativa will go between 55 - 75 days. if it's indica leaning start flushing around day 45 or so. if it seems like more of an even hybrid maybe start flushing at 50 - 55 days. you really can't go wrong as most varieties finish between these times. as long as your around 50 - 60 days flower start flushing until the loupe says it's time to chop.

cjk, thanks for that bit of info brother. I'm not too sure, but I think it's an indica. Leaves are neither too wide nor too narrow, so it could be a hybrid. It's definitely nearing the 45 day mark. I'm taking a little bit info from everyone's advice and just use my best judgment.

The number of days a plant takes to finish is a number affected by many variables, unless you're in a near perfect enviroment, throw it out the window.

One thing holds true, for every plant, no matter how many days a breeder pack claims the strain takes to finish...Trichs :ying:

Where exactly that point is will reveal itself to you ;)

Would any of you flush your plant, after chopping it, by sticking the stem part in a jug of water for several hours?

Saw a video on youtube where someone uses this method. For all I know, this is an accepted method that many people use, but I've never heard of it. What do you guys think?

Not to seem high and mighty, but you may want to consider investigating organic growing, which by nature, need not be flushed.

easier and cleaner... SWEET!

Not sounding high and mighty at all bro. I've actually been considering going organic for my next grow. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is organic or TLO in its simplest form amending your soil with everything that the plant requires for growth and just feeding the soil with plain water? If that's the case, I can see why flushing wouldn't be necessary.
