Yes you cantake the socket out of the reflector, Just make sure the bulb says universal. If it happens to say horizontal you'll need a new bulb.

What jm420 said is quite correct. It's nice to see more people using small setups try to make the switch over to vertical.

ok thanks guys ,

so it absolutely has to say universal on it ?

if i take the reflector off and turn it vertical its still the same light right ?

The light shouldn't care which way it's hung right? The issue is whether or not the socket can be hung vertical without putting pressure on the wire. You might need a socket designed to be hung vertical, probably costing $15-25 depending on which one you buy.

the socket shouldn't matter.

The bulb should say "H" or "H-..." if it's horizontal only. If there's a "U" then it's of course universal and your good to go....take a look and see if you can see a "H" "V" or "U" printed on the bulb....if there's none of those then it's most likely universal as well. (might have a # attached to it too, like "H-34" or "s51-U" ...or something like that...I just made those up)

if i take the reflector off and turn it vertical its still the same light right ?
like same spectrum and stuff? yeh. same/same just more of it :)

edit: the difference between vertical and horizontal bulbs is the way the filament hangs or is attached inside afaik

Keep us posted. I have the same set-up and have been curious as to whether it can be hung vertical.
Good luck

Hey, I just did this with 2 250wHPS - took them out of the hoods, spliced in some extention cord to lengthen distance to socket, and housed ballasts/capacitors/ignitors in a junction box outside of the cab to help with temps. Check out the last link in my sig
