hang em like you are or screen dry em for a couple days and finish em in jars or at least what you'll keep to smoke. Jars bring the smell out big time

and from the point it's jar dried, store it in a jar from that point on...

nobody likes to be laughed at. lol

I would say it had to deal with the way you are storing the bud after you already grew it. I prefer hanging buds as oppose to letting them sit on a screen because I think you get a lot more even drying that way. and warm air? I'd prefer a nice cool breeze and not any kind of warm air as that might be the problem.

i feel your pain man....im having the same issue....i cant seem to keep that "slap u in the face" smell that i have at harvest...i always seem to lose it at about the 4th day of drying and i can never get it back....if i stop drying too early then im left with wet bud...if i leave it too long, then it the smell goes away all together..havent found the happy spot yet..

4 different strains and they all wind up smelling similar...kind of "cut grass smell" if u know what i mean...FUCKING FRUSTRATING to say the least..

glass jars or ? ......would that not make them damp again

yep, thats why you "burp" the jar everyday for the first week or so. Do a search here for curing and read up a bit, people have different ways and methods to cure their crop. I like to open the jars once a day for about 10 mins for the first week, then a couple times during the second week.

if it gets too dry in the jar you can always add moisture back into them by placing a piece of lettuce wrapped in a napkin in the jar for a day. they will soak up that quickly and come back to life, try it with some crusty nugs sometime.

something else that REALLY helps to retain the smell while drying is not trimming them wet

just take off the fan leaves and leave the rest on , you wont lose your nice smell this way

after they have dried before jarring remove the leaves

I've observed dried material loose it's smell after a week in the curing jars, only to regain it after two or three weeks of cure.

Based on this observation, I'd say:

1. Hang/lay it out 'till the it hits the classic "stem cracking when flexed" point.
2. Get it in jars.
3. Monitor/burp them... look for the 'Perfect Cure Every Time' thread. Or click here.
4. Be patient for a few weeks. Hopefully it all comes back.

You might need 10x1 quart jars... or buy some gallons jars!

Some folks running big ops use Tupperware... People like glass. I'm not sure why, though. Looks cool, maybe? Doesn't off gas and kill you?

kind of "cut grass smell" if u know what i mean
CranAppleGemz, you gotta:

Dry it up. Cracking stem style.

Make sure your trim is clean.

Jar it.

Then wait.

Then wait.

Then be happy.

That mowed grass issue is from not getting it dry on the front end, and then the humidity contained doing bad shit. I'm sure there's a more better gooder description than 'bad shit', but that's all I can come up with right now... read the perfect cure thread, follow the instructions, and see if it the stupid grass smell goes away.

Cut grass or hay smell is from jarring too soon and too moist. You can try to dry them out in the open air for as long as necessary to lose that smell, might take a week or more.

For my style leaving them hanging upside down in the dark for 10 days 70 degrees 50% humidity would be perfect. Then they go into the jars. Too dry can be fixed a lot better than too wet.

Thanx Hydrosun.....

i think my problem is patience....as soon as i feel it dry to the touch im ready to bag it up...im scared to let it go too long...ive always wondered y it takes 4/5 days to for me but i always see everyone else dry for a minimum of 7...gonna let them go for for longer now...hopefully it turns out fo the best...

thanx for the help everyone

I think its the warm air going past your buds what I do is chop em trim em and with the buds on the larger stems put them in a old shoe box with some holes it and let them sit in a room thats about 70 f and 50% RH and let em sit like that for 8 days then its into the jars with the caliber III and I open the jars until the RH goes below 70% and my stuff smells just it did when I choped it

Regardless of how you dry and cure it (and you got good advice about jarring, and burping it) it's never going to have that strong smell as when it's fresh. I have herb in jars for a year or two, and it is still going to lose some odor. If you have some Cheese or Sour Diesel in a bag in your pocket, it will stink up a room (in a good way). After time goes by, that is lost, as the terpenes are volatile and will evaporate over time. After being jarred for from one to six months, you will get your best smell. After that, the smell will diminish. Potency is still there, though, if not exposed to oxygen or light, which oxidize the THC.

Yeah I agree with the previous posters, hay smell is weed that was either dried too fast, or jarred too wet, or both! I trim wet, use a number of hanging racks to dry, then when the product is about 3/4 dry (small stems snap, big stems/buds still kinda damp) I scoop it all up into paper bags and stick those into big Rubbermaid 28 gallon tubs. Every day I burp the tubs and stir the weed in the sacks inside. If the overall moisture level is too high I leave the tub open for a few hours. When the smell gets really good is usually when it's time to pack em up.

Another trick you can use, if you grow the same strain over and over: some guys will mix last months unsold weed with this months fresh weed (same strain) and the new stuff will take on the cured smell, the old stuff will take on the new smell, and all is well and good.

Humidity can effect smell quite a bit even when everything else is done properly. This is already dried, already cured, I'm talking humidity inside the jar. I've had a strain at 56% with good smell, let it get up to 63% RH and the smell dissapears, drop it down to 56% and the smell comes back. It is strain specific and they all seem to have that sweet spot for smell, smoothness, ability to burn.

If you want good smell consistently you need to control your curing process.
If you drop humidity too low too early the smell is gone forever. Humidity too high risks molds. It's all a balancing act.
Hay smell is generally dried too fast. The moisture is gone fast and didn't take the chlorophyll with it. Now you are smelling the remaining chlorophyll slowly coming out. If it's still wet and drying out, then you are smelling it on it's way out which is fine. Once it's dried and stored for awhile the good smells work their way out.
