Does anyone know if the products sold in aquarium stores are safe for plants? I was looking at some for the chlorine and chloramine.. the product claims to convert ammonia into harmless ammonium.
Thanks.
thats fine as well. you don't even need the pump and airstone, you can just let the water sit out in a 5 gallon bucket overnight to dissipate the chlorine. it was never convenient for me to do that so I always just put a couple of drops of dechlor into the water before watering my plants, it's not expensive stuff.
I personally wouldn't you a dechlorinator to treat water.. but would use a carbon filter instead.. if you're low cash flow a brita pitcher works ok imo..
these are designed for chlorine (even though they say chloramine too)... problem is most water contains chloramine so what instead happens is the bond is broken in the chloramine and your are instead left with chlorine (which is treated by the dechlorinator) and amonia (which although it can be eventually treated via nitrogen cycle) is alot worse than leaving the water untreated..
to explain this another way... I've killed fish in large fish tanks this way by simply putting a few drops of dechlorinator in the tank.. the resulting influx of amonia was beyond what the existing nitrogen cycle could handle and the resulting over abundance amonia was toxic to the fish resulting in their deaths, If i had known more at the time I would have just done a large water change and could have saved those fish...
you did mention the product converts all the ammonia to ammonium, but I have tried some water conditioners and I noticed a huge ammonia spike after treatment.. who knows maybe this product is different from what I have used..
