CHICAGO (Reuters) – The company that owns the Applebee's restaurant chain said on Monday it was immediately retraining its workers nationwide after a server at a suburban Detroit location accidentally served alcohol to a toddler.

The company, California-based DineEquity Inc, said it would also change the way it serves juice to youngsters to eliminate the chance of any mixups that could result in any more toddlers receiving mixed drinks.

On Friday, Taylor Dill-Reese went to an Applebee's in Madison Heights, Michigan, where -- among other things -- she ordered her 15-month-old son Dominick an apple juice.

What the little boy apparently got instead was a margarita. His mom told WDIV-TV that she only realized something was wrong when Dominick "kind of laid his head on the table and dozed off a little bit and woke up and got real happy."

The little boy reportedly began hailing strangers, too.

Applebee's released a statement on Monday saying it was relieved that Dominick was "not seriously injured as a result of accidentally receiving the wrong beverage" and apologizing to his family "for the stress and worry this caused them."

It said it would begin to serve apple juice to children only from single-serve containers at the table and would "retrain all severs on our beverage pouring policy, emphasizing that non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages must be stored in completely separate and identified containers."

here's the problem I have with the laws and injustices here in the USA.

you all know the laws against every aspect of weed; possession, growing, use, selling.

and yet is is perfectly legal for any household to have beer in the fridge & booze in unlocked cupboards allowing free and easy access to children.

of course if the above story was a case where a parent allowed a toddler to get a whiff of pot it would be national headlines instead of an innocuous internet blurb.......

I fucking hate double standards applied by anyone or any entity.

Heard on the news this morning Applebee's is gonna retrain their entire workforce over this incident. Well that and apparently it's happened before, so I guess that makes sense. Either way, yeah, Applebee's is a step above Mcdonalds

Margarita for an apple juice. I don't blame the server. I blame the Mom. You really aren't double checking what a server making min. wage brought your 15 month old kid? I mean how many apple juices have you gotten with salt on the rim?

According to the USA Today, the mother gave the server the child's cup, and that was filled with apple juice. I think it was just a mistake, especially if there wass a wrong label and the server didn't know about it.

I'm not a margarita or a tequila drinker so can someone clarify if either one or both of these items have a distinct smell to them? Maybe the server and/or the mom should have known that it is not apple juice if it didn't smell like apple juice.

The Applebee's restaurant chain is changing how it serves juice after a 15-month-old was accidentally given alcohol mixed with apple juice in the Detroit area on Friday.

"We want to express how thankful we are that the child involved in the incident at our restaurant in Madison Heights ... was not seriously injured as a result of accidentally receiving the wrong beverage," Nancy Mays, Applebee's spokeswoman, said Monday. "We also want to apologize to his parents, for the stress and worry this caused them."
The toddler's parents called Madison Heights Police at 4:30 p.m. Friday when they noticed the boy acting strangely at the restaurant at 1275 E. Fourteen Mile Road, according to investigators.
Madison Heights police officers discovered that a mixed alcoholic drink mislabeled as apple juice was accidentally poured in the toddler's cup. A test by the officers showed the beverage was .014% alcohol, according to Applebee's.
Applebee's will now pour juice for children from single-serve containers at the table, Mays said. Servers will also be retrained to emphasize that non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages will be stored in separate and identifiable containers.
Fifteen-month-old Dominic Dill-Reese’s mother ordered her son a kid’s meal and asked for apple juice as the beverage Friday afternoon. Dominic was checked out by doctors, and the family was told the child’s blood alcohol level was .10 percent. That’s over the legal limit for an adult driver.
Dominic is expected to be OK.

not to be outdone Olive Garden is serving sangria.......

not to be outdone Olive Garden is serving sangria.......

LAKELAND, Fla. – Olive Garden restaurants are making changes after a toddler was served alcoholic sangria instead of orange juice at a Florida location.

News of the incident comes after an Applebee's in Michigan accidently served a margarita to another toddler.

Orlando, Fla.-based Darden Restaurants says the mix-up happened March 31 in Lakeland.

Jill VanHeest says she took her 2-year-old son Nikolai to the hospital after his eyes turned red and dilated and he began acting up. She said he was given fluids and released a couple hours later with no lasting effects.

VanHeest's attorney contacted the news media in Florida after reports of the Applebee's incident this week.

Olive Gardens said it will now mix sangria individually to order, instead of in batches as it had before.

margarita's don't look like apple juice, sangria doesn't look like orange juice.
sounds like low life parents trying to scam a few bucks or get a free meal at the very least. i say put both mothers to work at a brothel for three weeks each.

my first cocktail @ age 7:

my mom & her friend were having drinks at our home in NY, safe in the burbs they decided to leave me & Doug home while they visited a nearby friend for awhile. They left two freshly mixed drinks behind on the table and so Doug & I downed them.

our moms got home and wondered why we were acting so happy and animated until they realized what we'd done, I remember their reactions to us vividly regardless of the buzz. our moms laughed it off.......
