Dumping the reservoir

Does anyone have a creative way to assist draining the reservoir, including the last bit that's the dirtiest...?

I use an extra pump with a long hose to drain, but it doesn't get it all. There's always a gallon or two left behind. Wouldn't want to start a new res with that in there....

slope to res to one corner and pop in a bulk head fitting and drain valve. add a barb and connnect a hose for insta-drain.

I put a floor drain in my current bucket, and it gets the last drop out. Im doing a low volume res with frequent dumps, so its nice to get it all out for once.

lowes sells a wet shop vac that fits on a 5 gal bucket for 20 bucks. that plus another bucket, back and forth does pretty damn good

I just wanted to add my experience with drains on the bottom of reservoirs is that, unless the seal is perfect, it will leak.

Plus a wetvac/ shop vac is pretty damn useful anyways.

Leak? Oh hell they will come rite apart and freakin gusher!! Water seeks more than its own level. It seeks to wet whatever it can, whenever it can. Or is that just me?:artist:

I keep several shop vacs around. The little ones for rooms. A bigger one just to suck hydroton out the washer. And one just for mondays like this one..

I use a low GPH pump, and when it gets to the last little amount of water I add some tap just to dilute it, and repeat...

Bulkhead fittings are idiot proof*. you just have to cut the hole at the proper size and use a rubber gasket. I have had no leaks whatsoever using bulkheads.

Elevated res on a sturdy frame, bulkhead fittings at the bottom corner, gravity does the rest. When my res was on the ground I used to have a pump on the inside with a discharge pump jammed into the bulkhead fitting outlet, so I just opened the valve and plugged in the pump. Still had to tilt it to get that last bit out, but putting a 115g res on a pallet or two helps with gravity draining.
