Long Island compost company top soil

found this stuff at HD, picked up a few 40lb bags at a couple bucks a pop.

They have a straight top soil and a "ultra light" top soil that is blended down with peat. nice of them to offer the real deal, which will start off as 20% of my mix and increase probably over time to around 30%.

I think that when picking topsoil.. quality should be your primary concern. To an extent: Peat is peat... it comes from basically the same place
perlite is perlite: aside from grading (size)

I don't think that applies to topsoil though. There certainly is good topsoil and bad topsoil.
I wouldn't turn to Home Depot OR Long Island for mine.

That being said I am experimenting with topsoil. I just mixed up a batch of LC's mix.. except i subbed out a little compost and replaced it with topsoil. This batch wont be ready for a while.. but I also xplanted some M1s the other day, and I topped the containers with about .5 inch of top soil, then some woody compost, and then tilled up the surface.. We'll see.
I've noticed that it holds a TON of moisture (it sucked up most of my tea.. urg), and I am a little worried about the top possibly going anaerobic/not letting air percolate down.. anybody have experience topping with topsoil?

FWIW.. I used "Black Earth" blend from the Coast of Maine company.
