Safer Alternatives, First Medical Marijuana Dispensary on the East Coast

Maine Allows First Medical Marijuana Dispensary On the East Coast

A small, unassuming house that has been converted to a business opened it’s doors last week, making it the first legal dispensary on the East Coast. Safe Alternatives is housed in Frenchville, Maine on Route 1 with no signage, but plenty of security cameras as required by state law. The facility looks like a typical house, but the business run by Leo Trudel has a secure growing facility locked up on the inside, and not many local supporters so far.

Some residents are wary of the business, because it doesn’t look like a business. The facility is located less than a mile from an elementary school, a point repeatedly mentioned in local media stories, but the state law says it must be no closer than 500 feet. One man interviewed for local TV affiliate WLBZ Channel 2 said that he doesn’t feel the small unassuming house looks secure enough for him and his family, saying that he doesn’t’ care if Safe Alternatives has said that they will be careful that marijuana doesn’t get into the wrong hands, but he says “the Japanese people received the same insurances about nuclear power plants, so I am just not convinced”.

So far, neighbors of the facility say that there has been very little activity at the location and operator and owner Trudel has declined media requests, telling one local affiliate, “To be perfectly honest, the media has really done nothing but play us against each other, and I’m done playing this game”. The city is currently working on a proposed ordinance that would be stricter than the state’s laws for marijuana cultivation facilities. There will be a public hearing on a new ordinance in May where residents will be allowed to speak to council members and add their input. We hope there will be debate on both sides of this issue.

wow, its happening! but i do have to admit that the sketchy looking building pictured above probably isnt the shining example we all wanted as the first east coast club...... of course ppl in a small town, or anywhere, are going to complain about the dilapidated "drug house" 1/2 a mile from an elementary school when it looks like that. i thought the point was to bring this industry out into the open........ probably should have opted for a more professional building. looks no diferent from the house i go illegal pick bud up from, which isn't saying much.

the idea ...atleast in my head... is to not give the media or town an inch, why setup shop somewhere that looks like it's illegal? why setup shop so close to a school, yea it may be totally legal cus its more than 500ft away, i just dont get it tho.. why even give them the opportunity to run a story like that. get a professional building, get away from a school, start dumping loads of cash into the community. ....sigh, the town is probably going to pass ordinances now and have them tossed out

I feel like people are going to go after these clubs no matter what.

If it was 2 miles from a school instead, we'd read people complaining that it was within 5 miles of a school or too far from town for anyone to actually use.

If it was a professional looking shiny storefront, poeple would complain that there is no way it could be nonprofit with all the money invested.

To me, this option doesn't seem worse than others necessarily. The owner(s) probably also realize that, being the first, they are a huge target for crooked local enforcement and or feds. For this reason, why not minimize initial investment until you see how things are going to shape up?

Unfortunately, with the nature of small town politics, all the scared people who hate cannabis are more likely to speak up than people who are in favor. After all, its a lot easier and safer, in the public eye, to say you disagree with cannabis than to say you support it.

just my 2 cents

A good start is a good sign! Let's hope Mass, Pennsylvania, and NC throw down soon!

Where is California going to ship their weed now?

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Cravenmore again

You know a good thing when you see one :) Herb and a Rub and Tug. Damn. That place would be a gold mine.

Hilarious. He compared the potential damage from an herb club to that of a Nuclear Reactor in Japan.

Yes. The fallout from the Ganja cloud will ruin everything for miles. The worst thing that could happen is that someone breaks in and steals everything or a robbery in broad daylight. Maybe a fire if the setup is janky, which I doubt. I suppose a tornado could hit, spread Ganja everywhere. Kids might find it and get high. We have to protect them. Right after we take them to Burger King and stick them in front of the TV.

Very Cool. A good day for Maine and the East Coast. Very happy for everyone out there.

Much Happiness from a life long east coaster, living on the west. I don't think I ever would have left, if things were more legit back home.

Looks like alot of the houses you'd expect to see here in rural Maine, not farmland ME persay, more like the one road town kinda rural. And it's really outta the way from most of us in the state,it's in The County.I guess that's why business is slow.Other than that,it's about goddamn time!

Amen Maine. Just wait after the initial wave of publicity dies down, some how, life will go on as it did before.

I do worry about if the elementary school children were to walk the mile, break and enter and some how get a hold of the devils weed. It might actually doom the owner to hell for eternity. Poor guy.

OMFG. are these assholes serious? it doesn't look like a shiny corporate business so it scares them? also one of the dumb asses compared it to a leaky Japanese nuclear power plant. GET A FUCKING GRIP! These are sheeple, completely controlled by irrational fear. I swear average Americans are so fucking stupid.

from A List Of Fallacious Arguments - Bad Analogy: claiming that two situations are highly similar, when they aren't.

Argument By Scenario - telling a story which ties together unrelated material, and then using the story as proof they are related.

Hypothesis Contrary To Fact - arguing from something that might have happened, but didn't.

Cliche Thinking - using as evidence a well-known wise saying, as if that is proven, or as if it has no exceptions.

He was just saying that he wasn't convinced that it's secure for his family to live in. You don't have to go Perry Mason about it.

Topical discussion is what media junkies do, he couldn't relate it to anything else. Honestly I'd be worried about the owners' safety. That doesn't make me a stupid sheeple does it? Please don't charge me; this doesn't qualify as a consultation, right?

ok last semi off topic post and I'm done sorry.

ok last semi off topic post and I'm done sorry.

^This is one of those times I cant let up. the man meant that he thought it wasn't safe to live in the neighborhood around it. It wasn't an affiliate of the store saying he didn't feel safe living in it. Considering the very low amount of crime in that whole entire state the ass hole should feel pretty much safe everywhere. I lived in the city with highest gun murder rate in the nation and I never even saw a crime other than the occasional car break in.

The same person said that it was like nuclear waste, like it is gonna leak into the water supply and poison his kids and make them all fucked up. That also means he assumes that his kids couldn't get pot easily at school from other kids already.

...and the "it doesn't look like a business," wtf kind of knit picking crap is that? these stupid people are scared and they don't know why, and instead of trying to learn, they just make up crap, and cry save the children.

I won't hesitate to discredit and shame these people. If I don't let up maybe one day their type will realize they are slaves.
