Hope is found precisely within our own hearts.
The lives of those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
are treasure towers themselves.*
Let's therefore, encourage each other and advance together!

Daisaku ikeda

*In essence, the appearance of the treasure tower indicates that on hearing the Lotus Sutra the three groups of voice-hearers perceived for the first time the treasure tower within their own lives. Now Nichiren's disciples and lay supporters are also doing this. In the Latter Day of the Law, no treasure tower exists other than the figures of the men and women who embrace the Lotus Sutra. It follows, therefore, that whether eminent or humble, high or low, those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are themselves the treasure tower, and, likewise, are themselves the Thus Come One Many Treasures. No treasure tower exists other than Myoho-renge-kyo. The daimoku of the Lotus Sutra is the treasure tower, and the treasure tower is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. (On the Treasure Tower, WND-I, page 299)

" I am praying that, no matter how troubled the times may become, the Lotus Sutra and the ten demon daughters will protect all of you, praying as earnestly as though to produce fire from damp wood, or to obtain water from parched ground."

"'When one becomes aware of the Buddha vehicle [the Mystic Law] within oneself, one can enter the palace of oneself [i.e., one's Buddhahood]. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is what is meant by entering the palace of oneself.' (cf. OTT, 209) From The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings.

"We who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are ourselves Buddhas. A magnificent palace exists in the depths of our being--a palace that no one can destroy and nothing can desecrate.

"Bringing our lives to shine and working to create beautiful realms of peace and happiness in our beloved communities--this is the invincible spirit of establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land."

"We who uphold the Mystic Law believe that all people--both ourselves and others--innately possess the supreme life-state of Buddhahood. When we strive as emissaries and disciples of the Buddha--chanting the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra ourselves and encouraging others to do the same--we can spread the philosophy of genuine respect for the sanctity of life far and wide and enrich the world through the workings of Buddhist compassion.

"What our world needs today are more and more genuinely committed people who embody the life-affirming ideals of the Lotus Sutra. That is, individuals who can teach others through their personal experiences and actions that all people alike are endowed with infinitely noble potential. By awakening to that inner potential, we can defeat the discrimination that is the fundamental source of all evil and arises from the darkness or ignorance in human life. Also, only by deeply recognising the inherent dignity of the lives of all human beings can we triumph in the struggle to fundamentally overcome the perennial problem of war that plagues humanity."

"There is trememdous limitless power within you [innate buddhahood within all of us]. Happiness will come to you when you acquire a sublime confidence in this power [The Mystic Law] . Then, will you make your dreams come true [We manifest our goals through the determined conviction in our chanting].

I believe our buddhahood is the relationship between our conscious and subconscious mind. Our conscious minds seperate us, while our subconscious minds unite us. The Lotus flower represents karma, or simultaneity between cause ond effect. The cause is our thoughts, and what we manifest through the doutbless conviction in those thoughts is the effect.

For the first time it is all starting to make sense to me. I can read what Nichiren wrote and truly understand the message he was trying to convey. This is very powerful stuff! I'm so grateful for Nichiren and all involved in the spread of this most powerful way of life!!

Cheers,
Cuban

"In 'Letter to Gijo-bo,' the Daishonin refers to the verse section of the 'Life Span' (16th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra that we recite each day in gongyo as follows:

"The verse section of the ['Life Span'] chapter states, '...single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddha, not hesitating even if it costs them their lives' [LSOC16, 271]. As a result of this passage, I have revealed the Buddhahood in my own life....

" I, Nichiren, say that 'single' stands for myo, or mystic, 'mind' for ho, or law, 'desiring' for ren, or lotus, 'see' for ge, or flower, and 'Buddha' for kyo, or sutra. In propagating these five characters [of Myoho-renge-kyo], practitioners should 'not hesitate even if it costs them their lives.

"'...Single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddha' may be read as follows: single-mindedly observing the Buddha, concentrating one's mind on seeing the Buddha, and when looking at one's own mind, perceiving that it is the Buddha. (WND-1, 389–390)

To seek the Buddha single-mindedly means, in other words, to strive earnestly to spread the Mystic Law. This spirit of selfless dedication is the hallmark of a Buddha.

"...Naturally, to 'not hesitate even if it costs us our lives' does not mean that we should recklessly discard our lives or not care about what happens to us. Rather, it means manifesting our potential to the fullest. Doing so requires that we break out of the shell of our small self that is dominated by ego and cowardice, and throw ourselves into the effort to widely spread the Mystic Law.

"...The renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-73) wrote: 'Present and past humanism has strengthened and proliferated through dispute, when the debate has been dignified and profound.'

The basis for fostering capable people
is, first of all, the improvement in our own lives.
That single wave of transformation created by one individual
gives rise to the momentum for ten thousand waves and more.
Let's all perform glorious dramas of human revolution!

"And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered."
