Any substitutes for rockwool ?

your walmart, lowes, and ace all sell jiffy peat pellets they work great

I use them for just about any type of grow
you can stick them into hydroton then into DWC or aero or whatever
you can stick them in perlite, coco, or any loose media

about the only thing I wouldn't do with them is stick them into a slab or block or stack them onto a slab or block

naturally they work in soil or soil-less mix

i have some of those jiffy peat pellets and i also have some perlight

but wont the peat stuff eventually break lose into the res ?

If it's an issue of convenience or fear of going into a hydroponic store, why not just use perlite or an 80% perlite & 20% vermiculite mix. It's cheap. It works. And it's inexpensive.

As far as I know soaking rockwool cubes to straighten out pH is caveman days. They come pH balanced now. At least that's what my Grodan packages say.

Search for the sphagnum moss thread for alternatives.
