It's that time of year and I'm gearing up for this outdoor season. I'll be running 3 - 100 gal and 3 - 65 gal DIY smartpots.
So far I'm running:

Headband S1, Bubbleberry with a possible white widow cross, Sensi Big Bud, Sensi Early Skunk all from seed and a cut that is supposed to be OG (but doesn't smell like it is).
My soil mix is:
local potting soil mix that contains compost, manure, sand, lime and gypsum.

mushroom compost
coco (2" layer on bottom to catch washed out nutes and good composted silt)
gypsum
shell lime
FF marine cuisine

bloom nutes :
Roots Buddha bloom
floranova bloom

Additives are:
FF microbe brew
FF kangaroots
FF open sesame, beastie bloom and cha ching
Floralicous bloom
Silica
Alfalfa tea

This is the first year that I have the space to do a proper outdoor grow. I'm going for 8' tall monsters, this season is going to be EPIC!

Thanks Green lung, I've got a number of grows under my belt indoor, outdoor and greenhouse but this is my first large scale run. With three years of constant reading here at IC and after reading Tom hill's large plants outdoors thread and watching Humboldtlocal, Ganja D and the other big dogs do their thing I'm confident it will be a success. I'm hoping for a full years supply of meds so I can put the money I normally would spend on them into other areas of my life, like paying bills and getting my car fixed :D

Thanks for the luck jd, I need it. :tiphat:
My season is starting out poorly, I've been waiting nearly three weeks for my seeds to arrive, not including the two weeks it took my payment to get there. Funds is a huge issue as well, I'm thinking of only using 20 gallon pots and what I have on hand for nutes. I have a bag of maxigro laying around and I'll use the foxfarm trio of solubles along with some molasses. Today I went ahead and popped some kali most x Godberry, some Bubbleberry x White widow and some Headband S1, if my order ever arrives I'll replace any males I get with my ordered beans later in the season. I should be able to get a few pounds of head stash and that will hopefully last the year. My script allows for up to 8 lbs a year so I'd like to shoot for that, would a 20 gallon container yield a lb?

canna boost is ok. not for the price. there better and cheaper out there. i think you can pull a lb from a 20 gal.

I'm looking for a cheaper source of triacontanol, other than buying the chemical version or making tea from alfalfa. So far I'm looking at this: http://www.wetandforget.com/products_triffid.php
But it has fertilizer in it with an npk of 15-5-5, I'm wanting to foliar feed but I think that may be too much nitrogen for foliar.
The other option is getting Advanced Nutrients Nirvana which has Tria extracted from alfalfa, or I've read that The Yellow Bottle nutrients have it in them. I'm not sure which way to go.

AfroSheep: thanks for stopping by, I've been checking out Kangativa's grow in the Mullumbiby madness thread he has some superior Sativa growing skills and genetics that are just amazing. I've been wanting to move to AU for many years, I'm just looking for an in. I've contacted companies over there so I would have a job lined up and be able to get a work visa but it's not easy.

GOT DANK: Do you know which one he uses? they have many products, I'm looking at the foliar feeds they have but it only says that they have Plant Health Regulators in them nothing about PGR's. I think it's their Bloom nute that has the PGR in them.

From what I've read that is the active ingredient in canna boost. I found that the yellow bottle Final Bloom has it in there but it's the same price as canna boost, AN nirvana is actually $7 cheaper per liter but I haven't checked the application rates yet.
EDIT: I checked the rates
the yellow bottle is 1/3 qt for $30 at 1/1000 dilution rate
nirvana is qt $22.50 at 15-20 ml gallon
canna boost is liter at 1/500 dilution rate
I'm not sure how this equates to cost per usage value though

I can' find anything that says it does, but that doesn't mean it doesn't.

yeah joe, a 20 gal will average out at a 1/2 lb or less. a whole is doable even more, but you should at least step up to a 65 if you can. good luck.

If you wanna do around a lb/plant I'd double that pot size from 20gal, or go with an open bottom. How far your roots can grow outward will effect plant size greatly. If I were gonna grow a 1 or 1+ pounder I'd use a pot around 3' in diameter or larger.
Another good thread is organics for beginners. I used the LC1 mix on my last grow and those plants grew faster than any I ever had. Some 50 gal smatpots with LC1 mix will exceed your expectations. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks guys, I've not decided on pot size yet. I'm thinking of putting them directly in ground using three foot holes.

Got a few seedlings popping up now.

what up joe, got this thread tagged now! if youre considering digging holes in the ground, maybe consider raised beds? fillthepotmore style maybe on a smaller scale to accommodate your desired plant size. they dont have to be too elaborate, even just making mounds using your soil mix over tilled and lightly amended native soil.

you can buy alfalfa meal in bulk which as you know is high in triacontinol and mix it into your soil, thats what i did for the for my garden this year. although i was lazy and bought the expensive cereal box sized boxes from my local garden supply.

are you in cali?

Thanks for stopping in localhero

I went ahead and made myself some smartpots out of pond underlayment, I went with three 100 gallon size for my older girls and I'm thinking 50 - 65 gallon size for the other three. I'm waiting to see how the young plants fare before sewing the others to size.

Ended up getting a 50lb bag of alfalfa pellets from the feed store for $12, I've had a tea brewing for over a week but I'm not sure it's fermenting right, it doesn't smell like what everyone said it should. It smells almost sweet, maybe it's the barley malt syrup and beneficial bacteria I put in there. It seems to be working on the test plants though, but man that stuff is acidic. I tested it out to be about 4.0 on the ph scale. My soil mix has lots of mushroom compost which looks like horse manure with alfalfa in it, I'm hoping it will also have lots of tria.
Did the boxed stuff have anything besides alfalfa in it? I heard some of the pellets have oil or molasses in them but the feed store lady said the stuff I got is pure alfalfa.

Yup, Cali born and raised brotha!

I'm going to do an update with pics soon, I've been so busy trying to make the city/county/state happy, with all their ordinances they don't make gardening easy. Have you ever seen someone put up a six feet tall fence around their beer cooler? Someday the masses have got to wise up to the benefits of cannabis. I'm not saying they have to use it themselves they just need to leave me alone about my herb. :D
