Balcony Garden Shed Round 3 - 16 plant SOG in vert tubes, 2x250w HPS

Hello to all my heroes in the vert thread. I am revamping my balcony garden shed to go vertical, it should really fit the dimensions of the shed better than what I had been doing. The shed sits on my top floor corner apartment balcony and blows over a busy street - an ideal spot. I've been thinking about this shed and planning this remodel for the last three months and I think I've got a design that will work. I'm posting it here to get ideas from all you bright people and avoid any mistakes as this is all still pretty new to me.

The shed is 26"x16" footprint with 66" height. I had already setup the shed's ventilation from the previous grows - a 256cfm dayton blower sitting on top of the shed in a separate bucket pulling air through with two passive 4" intakes at the bottom - everything else is new for this round. I've gotten most of my materials together, now its a matter of assembling. So far I've built a table and started the drainage plumbing. I'm going for a sort of NFT waterfall thing, I know I've seen it before on some other people's threads here. I'll be adding some 1/2" tubing to pump water up to the top and down through each column. I've got two 250w HPS lamps that I've removed from hoods and spliced extension cords to the sockets with junction boxes, and a big powerbox to hold the ballasts and a small fan on a small table behind the shed.

For strain, I've grown out some seeds I got from a dispensary nearby - Pride of Amsterdam x Blueberry Hogsbreath. I don't know anything about this strain, I'm growing it out for the first time, really I'm just excited to be growing out some seeds. They must have been feminized because all four seedlings that I kept were female. I've got 11 rooted clones vegging in a tub and another 35 in a cabinet in my kitchen waiting for roots. If all goes well, the 35 will root and I'll pick the best 16 to fill out the shed for this round.

I would love any feedback, thanks for reading.

Interesting setup for sure and can't wait to see some green in there. I'll subscribe and take a nice first row seat :)

Good luck with this!

Hi guys, thanks for joining along. I'm really excited for this new setup. I just checked my cuttings and most have rooted and are ready to go. Working on assembling the lights and the rest of the plumbing tonight, will get some better pics up soon.

Getting there...

Getting there...

...progress is slow but sure. I've got a little boy who is sleep training and another who is potty training and between the two we get very little sleep around here. But today I finished the plumbing and did a test run and it looks great! I found some barbs at home depot that made the upward flow easy to setup. There are two leaks that need to be dealt with but otherwise I'm happy. This just leaves hanging the lights with fencing and setting up the powerbox for the ballasts.

The last pic is of the cabinet in my kitchen just above the microwave that was just the right size for cuttings. These 35 cuts came from 2 mother plants grown from seed, Pride of Amsterdam x Blueberry Hogsbreath. They were almost a little too rooted, I really should have done this a couple days ago. I put the best looking 22 into a DWC bubbler that replaced this tray in the kitchen cabinet and gave the remaining clones to my neighbor. I'm hoping the clones' roots will get longer and drape down so that they get hit with the water coming down the tubes in the shed. I hooked up some shrub sprinkler heads to the ends of the tubing pushing out water down the tubes - I may play around with these and try something else, but so far it looks pretty good.

Still lots of work to do but its getting there!!!

almost there!

almost there!

Alright, got some more work done this weekend and I'm feeling pretty good. Almost ready to grow. The veggers in the microwave cabinet are getting kinda tall and need to be moved pronto, so I've got to try and tie up any loose ends tonight and get them into the shed. This weekend I glued all the ABS pieces together which took care of the leaks, and I setup the powerbox to hold 2x250w ballasts and a mini-fan. Last night I connected the sockets to the powerbox and hung up the lights - I had to splice in some extension cord to each socket. My heart stopped for a moment when I turned everything on and only one ballast fired up. I went to bed feeling defeated but woke up with a eureka moment - one ballast had an on/off switch in the powerbox that I had forgot to check. Flipped it on and we're good to go!

Sorry for the sideways pics, I still can't figure out how to fix that.

Yeah I'm in on this one also. Looking good so far man. From what I've seen/read don't let them clones get to big.

Well for one they will outgrow their tiny veg space. But also I'm trying to keep these plants short so I can squeeze in lots of them. They still have a stretch to complete. I haven't grown this strain before but it's indica dominant and I'm hoping will stay pretty short.

Thanks for joining along guys! Will get some plants in there tonight I think.

Alright, this show has officially begun! I just put the finishing touches on the shed and got plants in there. I'm thinking of topping some of them in a day or two to see how they like it and then it's flower time. Pics coming soon.

Hey Goozman. Look forward to watching this grow. Are you gonna use a type of cage for the lights? or let them grow naturaly? I grow in the same type of cabinet and space is definetly an issue as im sure you know. Good luck bro.

Hi wick420, yes I have some 1" poultry fencing surrounding the bulbs, trying to keep the plants back about 3-4" from bulb. So far today the plants have adjusted to sitting at a 45 deg angle, though some leaves are drooping. Hopefully will be alright.

Some pics of the finished shed. 2 days later now and the plants are kind of droopy. I'm going to redo the res, I'm thinking maybe I didn't properly flush/clean the system before getting plants in there, hopefully that does the trick. In fact the res is foamed up right now with soapy-looking bubbles and I don't ever remember seeing that with the last two grows. I'm thinking I'll top them tomorrow night and veg for another few days after that, then start 12/12. :dance013:Today is day 2 of veg in the new shed, before that the girls had been vegging under CFL's for about 3 weeks, after taking about 2 weeks to root from cuttings.

Looking real good Goozman. Gonna be some work keeping all those girls under control, but topping will help. I think your right on as far as flowering goes. Give them a few days to acclimate to their new digs, then trigger 12/12. Good luck.

Just redid the res. I started with RO water (8 ppm), added CaMag (200 ppm), GH flora (1300 ppm), sm-90, and just because I had a half bottle laying around, some liquid karma (1400 ppm). Here's hoping the girls perk up.

6 days veg in new shed

6 days veg in new shed

About to flower, just topped 9 of 16 last night, gonna try to make at least a mother or two out of them in my microwave cab to get some cuts for next round, I think the timing will work out well. There is plenty of new growth in the shed, too bad I just cut it all off :( but hopefully these plants will bush out well, I already see new branching at every node right down to the bottom - the effect of this vertical lighting is crazy! So I'm gonna flip maybe wednesday night. I already feel like I let these clones get too tall before putting them in the shed, next time will be better. I checked the roots just now on a couple of plants expecting a long skinny set of roots draping down and instead found a big fat clump of roots sitting near the bottom of the netcups - not what I expected but feels very solid. Stems are very rigid all around and leaves are not looking so healthy at all, twisted and kind of dry so I put a little fogger in there, and i diluted the res a little - I took a shot in the dark and fed high dose of nutes and its looking like maybe I overfed. I'm excited to have recently purchased this tds meter and am realizing that meters and such will have to be my next set of purchases if I'm gonna have any chance of filling my jars (my last round was very disappointing - i'm already out and I'm not even flowering yet!). I know now that I had root rot and calmag issues, and maybe nighttime temps that were too cold for my res being that its outside.

I turned the lights off for a minute to take a pic and get a good look at things - man those lights are bright!

The last one is a fogger in a tupperware to maybe help raise humidity. Even with the fan at its lowest setting there is a lot of fucking air movement and extraction in here. I'm worried my fucked up leaves are partially caused by dryness. It feels pretty dry in there i think, I need to get a temp/humidity meter in there. The fog leaves the hole at the top only to be sucked in by the fan and pushed upwards :tiphat: I wonder if its doing anything at all but I had the fogger sitting around in my closet so there you go. All in all I'm not dissatisfied and I'm optimistic that these girls will bounce back nicely.

Good looking setup I all ways wanted too set something like that up, everytime I walk into Homedepot I see those outside and I'm always looking at it like , "dam I could set something up nice in here!" Good luck with that humidity.
