Is Canna Coco ready to use out of the bag?

i think the only possibility of people having problems with brick coco is when they over flush and under charge it.....

having a mediocre starting salt content at least gives the coco some cations to lock up.....then you guys go and flush the fuck out of it and water with too weak of a nute solution resulting in shitty ass looking plants from the start.....i think this is the majority of problems that people encounter....and yet they go and blame the "salty coco".....

and btw....brick coco isnt "washed in sea water"....thats quite and outlandish and incorrect statement. this doesnt happen....idk how you came to that conclusion?? if anything coco is aged and flushed through with rainwater. why would a manufacturer "wash it with sea water" thats just plain stupid

and no ive never used canna, but i believe they precharge it for you. why the hell would u want to go and wash these nutrients away!?!?! ahhhhHHhh!!!!!

Buddin I'm just sharing my experiences with coco and all I know is that I transplanted 30 very healthy 8 to 12 inch tall plants into unflushed brick coco (down to earth brand) and watered them in with full strength dyna-grow plus cal mag (the run off was red). Within one day half of them looked like complete shit. I'm sure there is brick coco that doesn't need to be flushed but I don't think it hurts anything to do so then pre charge with nutes afterward. From what I've heard about canna I agree with you 100% that flushing would be pointless.

Heres an article that goes in depth about coco its uses and how its prepared

http://urbangardenmagazine.com/2008/12/coco-coir-hydroponic-uses/

Under preparation they talk about how a large part of coco is washed in tidal water in the country of origin, before being packed.

i think any error could have been on the mechanical aspects of transplanting and watering in...overwatering upon transplant is a definate way to kill or cripple your girls. i personally hydrate the bricks....squeeze excess water out by hand and flufflingly pack a container. i throw in a plug and dont 'water them in'....i let them dry out a bit for a day or 2 and have never had shitty looking results...only results where i know the roots are actively flourishing inside. also the brand 'down to earth', ive never heard of em, but im no coco expect conesseuir or anything lol but try to stick 2 the popular brands, botanicare, sunleaves, canna. botanicare specifically states an aging process allowing it to be flushed through from monsoons....and dynagrow, thats not exactly the best nutrient. kind of a budget formulation imo.....perhaps a better nutrient containing better chelates or humic cid would yield lively results

I fill a gallon pot with any coco I buy. I then run ro water ph'ed at 6.0 through it. My ro water is <.2ec.(lowest reading on my meter) If the runoff is a higher ec and the ph is higher than the ph of the ro water I ran through it then I flush. Only coco I have ever been able to use straight outta the bag was put out by Empire Organics who apparently have gone out of business. Damn shame as I absolutly loved their coir and chunks mixed in the smart pots. Bricks, in my experience, have always had the highest ec and ph of any I've used even after washed and soaked several times, and canna came in pretty high as well the last couple of bags I bought. Learned a long time ago...you can't believe a fuckin thing nute companies tell you. They'll cut a corner to save a buck and raise prices any way they can.

been usuing canna coco straight from the bag for years without having to flush, but tbh a big bag of canna coco is not very stealth, so just recently i have changed to a canna brick called UGRO, here is the link.

http://www.greenspirit-hydroponics....co-u-gro-coco-brick-70ltr-xl?___store=default

now the Ugro brick is of good quality and i have not ran into any problems so far but this is my first time using this product, but it seems a good alternative to the big bags of coco, very easy to carry and a little cheaper, 2 of the big bricks are the same as 3 big bags of coco, much better for stealth. will post up my final results with the Ugro brick and compare it to the canna.

here is some info on it.
Compressed Coco Brick.

The U-Gro coco soil made from the husk of the coconut, is an alternative growing medium to the traditional substrates. Washed in salt free water.

The U-Gro coco soil has been designed and developed especially for the most demanding growers and is suitable for all plants, in the interior and exterior.

It has excellent water retention and aeration, enabling a faster root development.

It is free from soil pathogens, odours, stones, roots and other impurities and is biodegradable and eco-friendly as it is produced from regrowing raw material.

In order to insure constantly a maximum quality of the U-Gro products, our internal laboratory carries out exhaustive quality controls based on random samples.

Look at the runoff out of the Bcuzz which is almost 40 bucks a bag. At 1440 ppms I would flush it.

the Bcuzz is pre charged so you dont have to. Its not salt its pre buffered .Straight out of the bag rinsing only removes the pre buffer . Premium brand..B

I found my experience with Canna Coco to be very different than advertised.

Runoff was at over 2.2ec out of the bag.

There was also a lot of "extra" shit in there. Sticks, bugs, nuts/seeds, shredded plastic garbage.

And... if that wasn't enough, their 50L bags contain only about 40L of media, so you're getting stiffed by about 20%.

Personally, I prefer the compressed coco. I expand it with clean water, test the runoff, and then I can dial it in EXACTLY where I want it. Letting Canna tell me the right charge for my plants did me no good. I saved my seedlings from Canna's super charge by flushing the hell out of it.

IMO, Canna is a great resource for information regarding coco, but they are also trying to sell you on something. Most of the "hype" I've heard about Canna has come from them... And when I tried them out in my own garden the experience was not "as advertised."

I've moved back to Botanicare CocoGro now (though I am using some of the reclaimed Canna Coco from the old grow) and my plants are much better off for it.

Ultimately there are a lot of ways to grow, and each grower must find a method that suits them best individually, but I am in no way about to tell someone that Canna Coco is the best on the market because I've tried many different coco's and this simply is not true.

As a comparison here are two pictures. The first one is Canna Coco on the 10th to 11th day of life above ground. The second is Botanicare coco on the 9th to 10th days. Same nutrient system. Both of them "right out of the bag." Yet it is very, very clear, which coco produced bigger plants in a short period of time. The burn you see on the Canna plants only got worse until I flushed the system completely.

You decide. Pictures speak 1000 words:

I use Canna coco straight out of the bag along with Canna nutes. I've never had any problems other than the occasional fungus gnat. As a precaution, I now add Gnatrol WDG to the nutrient solution for the first couple of feedings to eliminate any larvae that might be present.

Botanicare sux :)

$18 a bag for B'Cuzz is very very cheap. A lot of people don't realize when they pick up B'Cuzz that is full of nutrients and other stuff. There used to be a guy around here that planted directly in B'Cuzz and never used any other nutes. Me thinks he was full of crap, but hey you never know...

B'Cuzz almost did my plants in. I'm like "Why are they showing deficiency and I'm giving them nutes ahhhhhhhhhh". It drove me crazy until I actually read the bag and realized I got the wrong coco.

Did I mention that Botanicare sux :)

It's ready to use

It's ready to use

Hey guy. Recently i switch to coco and i am Loving It! Explosive growth. i love the control of complete soiless. Anyways, so far i have used two 60L bricks of grotek. Had to soak the bricks, then i cut holes in the bottom of a rubbermaid, flushed the shit out of them. Then treated them with 150PPM Calmag Solution and 150 PPM nutrient solution (i used Rubicon Organics, Marinis Seaweed)

This time its easier and more convenient for me to buy Canna Coir. I am wondering if Cannas coco is ready to use right out of the bag or if it needs to be treated first as well.

Thanks Guys,

-HT- :tiphat:
I have used it right out of the bag. I would recommend letting it soak up some water for a while.

I've used it to grow autoflowerers (Diesel Lowryder and Big Devil), in a small balcony grow. You just plant the seed .5 cm deep in your pot (mine was about 2 gallons), and let it grow. There is so much water that even a seedling can take full sun right away.
