Graham Purwatt

i plan on scrapping my 2 600's soon.i had to move my grow and due to a smaller area i borrowed a magnetic 1000 watt ballast from a friend.needless to say i am amazed how much more penetration and weight i am getting from it.so i plan on buying a 1000 watt digital ballast for myself soon. i remember reading about problems with lumateks and some others at that wattage so i figured i'd ask which one you have and how you like it and how long you've had it. any help is appreciated,gp

Of course, there is no black and white answer to this because there are no two electronic ballasts ( except the cheapo chinas ) that you can compare apples to apples.

I personally think Lumateks are the best. I know lots of people running LOTS of Lumateks and they do fine. Even know one person running like 60+ w/ hortilux super hps's ... no issues. ( most if not all of these cases they have the non-dimmable/ just standard) They make a dual 600w that is pretty much the same price as one 1000w FYI.

Whatever you do, just buy the bulb that the manufacturer of the ballast recommends.

I also prefer Quantum. The only thing I do not like about them is you can not fire lower wattage bulbs on them like other digital ballasts. That is my only complaint though and a very small one.

I've been super impressed with HydroFarms Phantom digital ballast. Dimmable feature fires bulb at 100% for ten minutes before it will start dimming to ensure that the bulb gasses properly mix. They are not as light as the NextGens, more like the wieght of a Lumatech but no moving parts noisy fans. I'm real happy with the Phantom!

or if you are happy with the magnetic you can buy a quality name brand 1000w for about half the price of a digital
$130-140 as compared to $289-299

No complaints with the Quantum's. Been running mine for just a year with no issues.

Researched quantums the other day because I found them for 280.

http://www.gladiatorlighting.com/products/1000W-DIMMABLE-DIGITAL-BALLAST-QUANTUM.html

Anyways ran into a post with a guy running well over 70 of them for 2 years with no problems in NW USA. Another big reason people like them is that there was some sort of electrical group (forgot the letters was 4) that is in the USA that these ballasts qualified for safety and quality standardsetc while lumateks did not and galaxies no one knew if they did. They are also made in the usa.

I am tempted to give them a try. I use galaxies now though and lovem.

I will never use lumateks again since one almost burnt my house down 2 or so years ago. Smelled like fire and I happened to be home. Electrical outlet was melted and the inside of the lumatek was burnt up. Remember it had something to do with the fuses and wiring inside the lumateks at the time.

I'm not tied to any brand but I personally never had problems with Lumateks or Galaxy ballasts. As for burning down a house, well my CPU's fan failed and the cpu got so hot the dust around the cpu fan was slowly burning. Only reason I noticed was I went home for lunch and smelt burning dust in the house. Not sure why the CPU's high temp didn't cut off but it can happen to anything.

Didn't the Infinite Breeze fans catch on fire?

Also on this flyer the "Only cULus FCC listed dimable ballast on the market" is not quite true. Lumatek have had the FCC sticker on them for quite a while and Nutrilife has these coming out in a week or so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACBkdt-qMl0 They are FCC and c/CSA/us approved.

Nextgens are the cadillacs of the industry right now.
Think of it like buying high end stereo audio amplifiers.
Generally the most expensive with the least features has the best sonic path.

I've ran a 1000W NextGen before with no problems also but I don't think those have any certification on them. Friend of mine wanted to get some for his medical grow and he couldn't as it had no certification sticker on them for at least c/ul/us
