Best version of CalMag

hi all i currently use botanicare calmag + (including iron edta) for my crops. i grow some kush range / afghan dominant strains and they use alot of calmag, i currently feed @ approx 120-150ppm calmag with every feeding, and every time my plants are getting watered. if i dont , new growth is obviously Cal deficient.

i read an article in Maximum Yield that says Iron EDTA , while it can address Iron deficiencies, it can actually cause Mangnanese deficinencies due to the nature of EDTA as a chelator.

is there a better calmag alternative??? GO makes a calmag+ but its organic and i assume is slow releasing. im using synthetic nutes and will be switching to RDWC soon so i need a synthetic

i use grotek's cal max and it works great for me at about half the price of botanicare if that helps

I stopped using Botanicares CalMag because I kept getting dark, cloudy bottles, when it should be translucent.

I've been using Techniflora MagiCal with good results, although it is about $10 more per gallon.

Humboldt Nutrients Sea Cal for veg and Sea Mag for flower, there way better formulas with no EDTAs 5 mills equals 10 mills of CalMag+ and there veg formula has higher levels of calcium that makes your plants a little more woody and hardy, plus there seaweed and other goodies in it. good chit mang check out there whole line, high quality and highly concentrated.

The label on my bottle of Botanicare Cal -Mag Plus shows it as having 2% nitrogen. I feel that my plants are doing just fine for N without this. Do the other brands contain nitrogen also?

Ive used cal mag bloom from advance with ok results, i use this due to getting to many cloudy bottles of organicare , but am always looking for a superior product, those humbolt newts sound interesting.....

MagiCal is good and use to be cheap but about three years ago their price shot up quite a bit.

im ready to be attacked for this comment...
advanced nutes cal mag is the bomb diggity... the grow and the bloom both have boron zinc iron and every thing else good but in such minute doses i set my ppms to 80-125 with em in bloom depending on if the strain is a cal mag whore and never have any defeciency... in veg i dont use it unless i see i need it the ab and other shit i dump in my soup seems to be enough for it.

Mg is a mobile element. IMO, your plants would have to be in bad shape to have Mg def present in new growth.

New growth doesn't have the capacity to photosynthesize as much as older growth and may appear deficient or a lighter shade of green. Fe def may mimic Mg def in new growth but appears visually from axial to tip, not tip to axial like Mg def. Defs usually occur at specific plant locations. Mg def usually appears in older growth first.

I used to have Mg absorption problems and bought a quart of Botanicare CalMag+. IMO, I could use Epsom salts and get the same result.

I usually use a base nute with ~1.5% Mg and have found that a workable pH range helps absorption better than adding CalMag. Even with Mg hogs, elevated Mg needs usually start in mid veg and subside by week 3 of flower. IME, long flowering sats might get no more than 4 weeks Mg supplement, 5 tops.

ATM, I'm growing large sats that could handle a tsp of CalMag per gallon of Ca-less water. I'm into week 5 of flower and haven't used a drop. GenHydro Flora Bloom lists 1.5% Mg, that's all they get.

IMO, dropping Mg supps no later than mid-flower will make for better tasting smoke.

According to MyNameStitch, too much Ca will inhibit Mg absorption. Depending on your water source, it may contain calcium as well. Might be causing Mg problems.

i was talking about Mn not Mg

Ok. Thanks for the info, didn't know Calmag has Mn.

Hope you don't mind the input. Plants need ~30x less Mn than Mg. A base nute with ~0.05% should do the trick. Do you have the weird pink hue in new growth? Always wanted to see a Mn def for reference.

IMO, vendors wouldn't include Mn with Mg supps if pH levels conflicted with the respective elements. In addition, a workable pH range is better than static for all pH challenged elements. Best wishes.
