AG, from everything ive read on the whole situation, Zuffa is making small tweaks in strikeforce now. it sounds like they are going to wait to make major changes until all the contractual obligations of strikeforce have been fulfilled.

case in point. Zuffa has insisted that SF conform with the unified rules of MMA. this means allowing elbows on the ground. from some recent reading, i see they're starting to cull the amateur bouts. while this may hurt up and coming fighters exposure...a major promotion is no place for amateur MMA bouts. amateurs are amateurs for a reason, and thats why there are smaller shows.

im not trying to hate on up and coming fighters, but theres minor leagues out there....and they arent operating for their health.

Yes there is the ammy circuit out here (I am VERY involved with the amateur circuit in my area and yes there are 'shady promoters') but honestly, I am for a big(er) promoter coming in and helping this out. When it gets comes to sanctioning of the events, I would prefer that it stays with the local (fighters/trainers based) sanctioning bodies. When you go to a pro level, the sanctioning becomes the responsibility of the states athletic commission.

There are plenty of up and coming amateurs that show lots of promise. Not to mention, having a banner and the experience/planning skills of an organization like Zuffa, we will see who is serious about pursuing this sport as a career. (Not to mention, helping the fighters transition to the pro circuit that much easier)

TBH, the amateur promoter rarely gives a shit about the fighters career path unless they are the owner of the school the fighter trains out of. With a big hitter like Zuffa, school affiliation will have much less relevance to the doors opened to an aspiring fighter on the amateur circuit.

But I really don't think Aoki can compete with the top-of-the-heap the 155'ers. I think Edgar would smash him, Griffin would smash him, Maynard, .. Anyone who's a decent striker and a strong wrestler, Aoki will have problems with.

Did you see his gimmick-y fight on NYE!? Oy vey..

/loved it

Aoki is not the best 155er but definitely belongs in the top 10 based on his resume and grappling skills., he will certainly help mix things up in an already crazy division.

i did enjoy watching his face get crushed after the disrespect he showed in the "K1 rules" round..

Free UFC fight night tonight on spike. I like the looks of the card tonight. Should be a good one. Hope everyone has spike and can watch but I am sure someone will be streaming it!

Dunno. I think Guida could beat him, IMO. Maybe not run right through him, but I wouldn't be surprised if Guida could avoid getting submitted and grind him out.

That NYE fight made me smile. :)

I think it's the weakest UFC card so far this year but I'll definitely tune in for Davis -vs- Nogueira and Hardy -vs- Johnson tonight.

Nogueira is a big step up from anyone Davis has ever fought before but I think Davis can definitely work his top control and steal the judges scorecards in a three round decision. I really don't want it to happen too prematurely but I really hope the UFC continues to groom and develop Phil Davis towards a title shot. As it stands I don't see anyone giving Bones a real fight at 205 but Phil Davis with some more seasoning could be a potential foil. If Mr. Wonderful can walk away the winner tonight I'd love to see him paired with Ryan Bader next. Although I think I've heard rumour that Bader is being matched with Tito 'Mr. Potato Head' Ortiz for his next fight.

And I'm curious about how Hardy is going to rebound from such a definitive loss to Condit in his return against a very dangerous striker in Anthony Johnson. Rumble should be able to use his wrestling effectively to keep this fight standing but if Hardy wants to avoid a 3 fight skid I'd suggest trying to spend as much time on the mat as possible trying to work submissions.
