Hans Rosling's famous lectures combine enormous quantities of public data with a sport's commentator's style to reveal the story of the world's past, present and future development. Now he explores stats in a way he has never done before - using augmented reality animation. In this spectacular section of 'The Joy of Stats' he tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers - in just four minutes. Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine.

Hans Rosling's 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes

The video is 4:48 long and well worth watching. it's really about global health.

Hans Rosling shows us with great enthusiasm that the world we live in is becoming a better world for all and that we have been moving in the right direction all along, it borders on inspirational and is so easy to see and understand in the graphics he's provided.......

mods, I hope you'll leave this right here on the Den's main page, it's very interesting without being controversial although open to interpretation & general forum discussion.

I didn't watch it...but I wonder HOW truthful he is. Does he explain how we went up up up until the 60s? And since it's been down down down... Anyone know what happened to change things? I do...

actually it's gone up up up since the 60s too.......

I especially like the way he shows the overall dip in health and wealth due to WWI & the Spanish Flu, quite subtle & he doesn't slow the graphics down too much but you see that sudden dip by dozens of countries.

watch it if you haven't.

Cool way to present information.
It brings to mind a quote from Samuel Clemens.
"There are white lies, there are boldfaced lies, and there are statistics."

That was excellent. Thanks for posting it.

What struck me after watching it was how the expanding world population is going to eventually (maybe soon, relatively speaking) stress our planet's ability to provide enough food and resources for the population to continue to get healthier.

When there isn't enough food and resources (including water) to go around, wars start, famines start, etc.

I wonder what that guy who made the video would say about that.

who knows over the next handful of decades, as the world gets healthier it may well be because we perfect ways to improve the overall health of the planet itself which in turn feeds the masses.......

I liked the video, but this comment struck me funny. Everyone knows there's no money in perfecting ways to improve the overall health of the planet and so it won't happen, at least not in our lifetime. The planet will look after itself, it has done so for millions of years and will continue to do so. It's up to us to make sure we can adapt when Mother Nature decides she's had enough.

Amen, HD! healthcare accounts for over 17% of our economy. I doubt people will ever get healthier than they are today. As hd said, no money in it. Imagine if everyone got well overnight. The economy would collapse.
