The Gas man cometh.

Its that time of year, the gas inspector turned up unanounced this morning wanting to do an annual inspection of the gas fire and boiler. I tried to put him off but he reckons its got to be done by law, as it stands he's coming back in a week. Not sure what to do except take everthing down for the day which is going to be a nuisance to say the least. Just wondered if you guys had any suggestions on how to get round this.

not really alot you can do with gas by law if they need to come in for inspection or suspect something is up usually using excuse of can smell gas then theyl come in try now to fob them off to many times thatl put the wind up em

Thats what I was thinking putting them off may look suspicious. I was wondering if I rang the gas board and asked them to disconnect me if then they wouldn't need to do an inspection.

think for sake of a day its not worth risking delaying it boilers especially have a nasty habit from going fine to blowing a hole in side of your house if not looked after might just have to have one day of inconveniance but then got another year of not worrying about it

I'm pretty sure British gas can enter legally after giving you 7 days notice of inspection. They will drill the locks when the notice has passed if you dont let them in , they are legally entitled to do it and do not need a warrant from court.

cops will prob be there too standing back and watching to ensure the peace is kept (pfffft yeah right)

yeah, better to let him do it at a time you know he's coming rather than him let himself in some other random time when it could have worse consequences, pisser though.

i had the gas inspection recently. they only check the boiler and cooker, so no worries.
that is, unless you grow in the kitchen or dont have your order under control.

Go for it and dont worry, i get one every yr, as long as your cf is working and your fans dont howl like a jet taking off you`ll be ok.

Thanks for the advice, will take it down for the day at least its not for another year. Normally they write first but this one just turned up at the door he was easily put off for a week though. Owning your own house is the way forward.

That's odd - I've never had the gas board (or whatever company I get it from) inspect my boiler/cooker/fire in my life.

The only thing they did pester me for was to renew my gas meter for safety reasons. They kept sending me letters to arrange an appointment "at my convenience". The thing was that they expected me to wait in for them from 0800 to 2000! So I just thought fuck 'em and didn't reply. After about a year there was knock at the door and there's a gas engineer standing there asking if he could come in and change my meter. It turned out that so many customers were not replying to the request that they were just knocking on the relevant doors when in the area!
I wasn't doing much so I let him in to do his job - took about 40 minutes - problem solved. There was never any question of compulsory entry or anything like that.

Pack everything down into cardboard boxes and store them someplace there isn't any gas to inspect :D

He's due in an hour. Not packed anything away. Went for the option of ringing the housing people and telling them i don't use the gas, he's supposedly coming to put a temporary cap on it which only involves going in one room. Or thats the plan.

I was talking to someone the other day who does work for bailiffs and he was telling me that they (the power co.) have the power to go to court and get an injunction just to get access to your meter to read it! . They could only do this before now if it was to do with gas safety, now they can drill your locks to get at your meter if it's inside the house .
It's a quick process aswell they can get the order in just over a week.

My gas man isnt from the actual gas board he works for the housing agents. By law they have to do an anual safety inspection on all their properties. Had the same thing happen at my last place.
