Does a carbon filter's smell linger?

Hello everybody.
I am writing to ask you experience with a second hand carbon filter.
I have the opportunity to buy my friends used equipment and one of those things is a carbon filter that has been used, but still has some life in it.
I want to know if I were to store the used filter in a closet or car, until I can hook it up and get it running, if it would start to smell? I am not growing presently but am worried about it "off gassing".
If anyone has any experience with this situation I would appreciate your chiming in.
Thanks!

It depends on the filter but a lot of carbon filters just need to be washed after every grow and they can last a while. do you have any pictures of it?

Hey Sumbolt,
Thanks for the reply.
It is a can filter.
I am just worried that if it sat in a closet, between uses, weather or not any oder would dissipate.

i've stored partially used carbon filters, i dont think they stink. im desensitived to dope though

don't be cheap when it comes to the filter... get a new one if its for flower.. when you remove the plastic from the filter its in use.. I have been done for smell before i STRONGLY suggest new filter and not the light weight they are no good for long ouse.. I change filters every year better safe then sorry

I appreciate everyones input, thank you.
I do run good quality filters until they start to smell.
Then I replace.
The one I currently have, but not in use, still has plenty of filtering properties remaining.
It has been thru a couple of cycles though and I was afraid that while laying dormant it may release scent it had previously trapped.
I think I did get my answer from Cravenmore and zwh, in that a used filter, not currently in use, does not smell like what it had scrubbed from the air.
Good to put my worries to rest.
Thanks ya'll!

Which light weight ones are you referring to?
I was under the impression that the new light weight filters are BADASS because the extra processing creates a less dense, more porous material that multiplies the contact surface?

Then there are the "washable" odor sox that are more like a carbon sleeve and mine works very well. So far

Then again what's long use/ I have a 6year old bulb in my veg tent....
