Vermont Cannabis Laws

I have a buddy who just got caught with about a 7 oz. give or take an oz. I looked up the legislation regarding cannabis on norml (http://norml.org/index.cfm?wtm_view=&Group_ID=4568) and it appears they at least have medical. That being said, it seems that they are rather conservative or strict on who gets medical and I know this guy wasn't a medical patient. I don't want to give out too many details but lets just say first offense and a very standup guy.

Does anybody have any experience with Vermont laws, their attitudes regarding cannabis in general? Any information you guys can direct me to? Any help/information/tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

not as bad as NH but still not friendly at all. Get a good lawyer for sure, they are probably going to try to charge him with intent to sell

That's what I am worried about as well. They do have medical and I don't really know anything about the case law there but I am hoping that he can try and take the "I administer my pot orally in edibles" route to justify such a large amount. It was in one container and there was no scale found so who knows...

Intent to sell @ that amount can yield up to 5 years in prison and $100,000 in fines. Not to mention a felony charge in addition to some other felonies and/or misdemeanors...

if it was all in one container + no scales that certainly helps. If he has no priors there is no way he will go to jail for 5 years, or 1 year, if he has a good lawyer he will still most likely get probation at worst.

First offense and wealthy. White too; not saying I think this should have bearing but I have a feeling, especially over there, that it will. Not worried about him going to jail really, just wondering what felonies he can/will get and how much the fine will be. Thanks for the response :)

you may already know this, but getting a good lawyer is the most important thing. You can check the NORML website and get a list of several that work in VT, all the ones I've met in my state are excellent.

It is unfortunate that VT really only has a medical law in name. I belive there are less than 250 individuals currently protected by the law in a state of 500,000. I'm sure a statement from his doctor about a medical problem or medical use would help.
