What's new

I just fu@ked up ! how do i wire this ?

All my fans run on 12v adaptors left over from cameras, phones etc. You cant just plug a 12v fan into 120v outlet hehe. I also wire one of these to help control the noise and speed of fan.

gray strips should be + Red will be + If there is more than two on fan,it is a mutipl speed fan. each color will be a diff speed. Black is -

Just play around with it. 12v dc is safe (no major shocking)

theirs only one set of wires on the DC fan 1 black and 1 red .

but before i try it , FOR SURE the cell phone charger will work ,

i know maybe not on this fan now but in general it will work ?

yes if it is a DC fan with the same voltage as the charger. The charger will have the out put on it.

the writing on the back is so small

it looks like it says input 120/something

and output 5.0v ?? something like that it is really hard to read

is the output info what im looking for ?

When you go to Radio Shack you'll have a choice of two sizes of AC 120 volt axial fans. The 4 1/2" 120 volt fan will cost you about $25. You'll have to supply your own cord, which you have. I bought one recently and it didn't seem to matter which way the wires were attached, it only rotated one direction. There will be little arrows on the side of the body to show forward and direction of rotation. The side with the label is the front of the fan. Radio Shack will have the small size wire nuts you need. If you can buy one from a hydro shop you should be able to get one that already comes with a cord.

I don't know why people are still talking about running a DC fan. That's why you had this problem. You need an AC 120 volt fan.

just go pick up a 12v dc adapter at a thrift store..they have bins of them for a dollar or 2.
Don't use wire nuts on those little wires, pick up some shrinkwrap stuff at radioshack , but instead of buying their over priced fans..head down the road to bestbuy and they probly have cheaper ones with speed controllers.
Or order some off newegg for dirt cheap.
Wiring is easy if you have the right adapter...one way it will work and the other way it won't...but you won't fry it.

You also need to make sure that the current rating of the power supply is sufficient to power the fan. For example if the fan is 12 volt and say 500ma... that is 1/2 amp so the powers upply needs to meet or exceed the current rating. The voltage should be exactly what is called for. Of course you could just order this http://www.dalco.com/ProductDetails2.aspx?sku=47325 it's 7 bucks and you can wire it right to a wall plug.

Just make sure it's enough CFM and the size of the fan fits your application.
I hope this helps.

Why has noone suggested he buy himself a computer power supply and connect the fans to that using molex connectors - that way you have the fans running at their full speed instead of using 5 volt phone chargers that will run them at less than half capacity?

That being said, 120V fans do perform better and if that was the only PC fan he had, I can almost guarantee its completely stuffed.

i was just asking if you can do that ,

Anyway ,

I got the ac fan i ordered off of amazon today

it is bigger then the dc fan and its metal not plastic

it came with a pre wired cord on it

i plugged it up to see how strong it was and it blew me away lol

the little fan is the old dc fan and the bigger one is the new ac fan

Im getting a lot more air flow through the exhaust now :)
