the border between organized crime and government doesn't exist.

all the large-scale operations that are getting busted probably didn't pay their bribe.

here is a post from somewhere else that spoke to me - credit to the original author.

Analysis & A Call to Arms: Why the boom of PERSONAL GROWS will lead to legalization

as you might have noticed, in certain matters involving large amounts of money, public opinion is usually ignored by those elected to represent it.

the cause of this in case of the neverending fight for marijuana legalization is in my opinion the following:

corruption is systemic.
wherever you look, any country you choose, every institution there has problems with corruption.
from parliaments and unions to local city councils, anyone who has influence that might further someone else's plans is willing to use that power for financial gain.
it's just a question of how much.
and if you happen to encounter someone with a backbone, there's always blackmail...

regardless of how you think about the actual severity of the problem, you can't deny the fact that corruption is rampant.

so, usually the best way to start off in search for answers is the question the police ALWAYS use when investigating a crime. CUI BONO? WHO BENEFITS?

in the case of marijuana prohibition, the most obvious beneficiary is organized crime.
let's face it - unless you have a really short connection to a small-scale grower, some or most of your money spent on weed will flow into the coffers of organized crime.

a large city consumes tons of marijuana every day - the very logistics behind supplying it alone demand a well put together ORGANIZATION!

and since corruption is ILLEGAL, it naturally attracts organized CRIME as a way of doing their business.

as long as there are huge profit margins in the illegal sale of marijuana, pressure will be exerted upon the appropriate people to KEEP IT ILLEGAL.

i'm sure there are plenty of growers even on this forum who would rather have weed stay illegal, since they make more money than they could otherwise.

and this is where the huge boom of small, personal grows (homebox, etc.) that has started a few years ago, comes in.

HELLO PERSONAL GROWERS!!!
many of you have started growing for your personal stash and maybe a few good friends. and so did i a couple of years ago! like you, i was sick of shaky hook-ups and the feeling of panic you get when looking at a fast dwindling stash.
and while the weed was occasionally excellent, often it was mediocre.
anything that has to be grown illegally and large scale for big markets has to be fast and huge. and most fast flowering and high yielding strains just aren't the upper levels of awesomeness that is smoking marijuana!!

add to that the insane practices that have surfaced in recent years - adding glas powder, lead spray and other shit to the weed to make it heavier/look better!

and don't forget all that money that goes to crime.org - frankly i couldn't ignore the fact that i was giving about a hundred smackers a month to them.

so i started growing in a homebox and i haven't looked back! before, i didn't even have a cactus in my place, but while i made/make mistakes, i managed to raise enough green gold for almost a year and the weed is AWESOME! it's easily as good as some very decent weed in amsterdam!

now i have enough weed to give to my close friends for free. they don't have to buy from shady sources anymore. (or at least less)

DOUBLE WHAMMY!

anyway, to get to the point:

MARIJUANA WILL NOT BE LEGAL UNTIL IT IS NOT PROFITABLE ANYMORE TO KEEP IT ILLEGAL!!!

EVERY GRAM/OUNCE YOU GROW YOURSELF OR GIVE AWAY TO FRIENDS IS A DIRECT HIT AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME AND A STEP TOWARDS LEGALIZATION!

IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT STARTING TO GROW - DO IT NOW!!! IT'S AWESOME!

IF THERE ARE A HUGE NUMBER OF SMALL SCALE GROWERS SUPPORTING THEM AND THEIR FRIENDS, PROFITS FOR ORGANIZED CRIME WILL FALL, PRESSURE ON THE CORRUPT OFFICIALS WILL WEAKEN AND PUBLIC OPINION (SUPPORTED BY THE LEGALIZATION MOVEMENTS) WILL MAKE MARIJUANA LEGAL!!!

(sorry for shouting)

so before i overstep (y)our attention span even more - in closing here are some slightly adapted wise words:

'Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone.
I want you to get mad!
I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians, err... Terrorists and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.
You've got to say, 'I'm a CANNABIS SMOKER, Goddamnit! I'm a HUMAN BEING! My life has VALUE!'
So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the nearest grow shop. Open the door, and stick your head in, and yell,
[shouting]
'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! I WANT YOU TO SELL ME A HOMEBOX STARTER SET!!!'

(if you don't get that reference - go watch "Network" NOW!)

Good News this time. The council of the city of Utrecht has decided on a new project. They are going to start private clubs whom's members will be allowed to grow cannabis. This to get cannabis out of illegality. The project will be started with 100 to 150 cannabis users in Utrecht within the near future. Further details on how the project has to take shape are currently unknown. --

DUTCH CITY WANTS TO GROW POT IN CO-OPERATIVE, FLOUTING FEDERAL LAW

Reuters

The Dutch city of Utrecht wants cannabis smokers to grow their own marijuana in a co-operative, a move that would go against the Netherlands' drive to discourage soft drug use.

It also would be illegal, the government said.

The use of marijuana is legal in the Netherlands, but the mass cultivation of cannabis plants is illegal and controlled by criminal groups.

"If you have some users grow the cannabis, you remove it from the criminal and illegal scene," said Utrecht Alderman Victor Everhardt. By controlled cultivation, the quality also would be guaranteed and reduce health hazards, he said.

Wow, a solitary voice of reason from the Netherlands in the DEA-infested wilderness. I'm impressed. I hope that the Utrecht city council's novel idea comes to fruition.

There is an indoor Olympic! snowboard slalom.

Anyway, The plan of the city of Utrecht got officially shot down by the Minister of Security. It is impossible to get the green light for this idea, and the Minister refuses to talk to the council of Utrecht because he will not change his mind..

Just before the National holiday of Queensday and the week before the annual may vacations. The Dutch government has plowed another law into existence just to be sure. This time it is a mandatory saliva test that can be taken by the cops to see if drivers have used drugs. The test won't be able to establish how much a person has used, just to see if he has used after which the driver will undergo a mandatory bloodtest when he tests positive. The test won't be able to detect all drugs so the cops can start checking pupils, do reactionary tests etc.. etc.. (Think American cops when they pull someone over for a DUI).
The government will introduce a list with the maximum allowed active substance some is allowed to have in his bloodstream.

Strangely enough doh over the course of 2010 this was a big discussion due to the fact that for most types of drugs, one can't say how much active substance a person needs in his bloodstream to be efficiently influenced.
As all of us stoners know, 1 joint can be enough for a rookie to make him puke and pass out, while the hardcore stoner can keep on puffing without acting out of the ordinary.

Today is another victory for personal freedom!! huray!

Yeah that's because normally there is always a party in parliament that has a more liberal view on marijuana. Right now there is a tag team of christians, communists posing as right wing extremists (but strangely enough pro israel) and a "liberal party" thats turned conservative. Add to that a minister of security thats hardnosed and a deputy thats a teetotalling freak that prefers to have everything that might be a slight enjoyment, be it parties, downloading music or smoking, banned and preferbly punishable by a fine of atleast a couple of thousand euros. Add to that politicians that care more about their future than about the nation they are supposed to be govern and you get for the first time a really difficult situation for tolerance towards basically anything that isnt allowed by the bible or the talmud.

It really is fingers crossed for the next 3 and a half years, and hope the right wing screws up so much that the real liberals get back into power. But if they are to be close to succesfull when it comes to financial part, the cannabis world in The Netherlands will be seriously fucked.

Another eventfull week.
Next to the Hell's Angels HQ in Amsterdam, the cops found a grow with approx. 800 plants. They aren't sure whether the plants belong to the Hell's Angels.

Yesterday the cops busted a truck going to Utrecht with 3000 kilo's of Hash, the cops claim this stuff had a value of 10 million euro, so it must be the absolute lowest quality there is around.

And on a further note the Minister of Security announced that they are going to change they way that they handle confiscated drugs. They are building a new Central Storage facility and have introduced new protocols towards drugs that have been confiscated.
Rumor has it that a certain amount of the confiscated dope mysteriously disappeared from the local police HQ's.
Memories arise of the IRT scandal of 1995, when the cops were actually dealing drugs and transporting drugs as an investigation method.

I would not be so confident if I were in California. As in Holland the law can giveth and the law can taketh. New restrictions, laws and regulations popping up all over California. We pointed to Holland to have favorable laws passed. They will point to Holland to regulate. Under the current federal administration the tide is going out. What about the current or future state administrations? The best rout to preserve and advance what we have now is to pay taxes and fees on what is grown and distributed. Once governments get their hands in our pockets. They will be hard pressed to take them out.

Well one of the problem is, is that these conservatives are against cannabis for a couple of reason, the traditional biggest party is a christian party and therefore against it, the conservative liberals are against cannabis at the moment coz they need the support of 2 seat extremist orthodox protestant party, and the freedom party is against because they are against organized crime (yeah you go explain to them the prohibition thing and the chicken and the egg thing). Even doh the economical side of international politics is focused on economics they refuse to accept that legalizing it can save them over 2 billion euros in policing costs and can make them billions in taxes. Maybe, some of them are even familiar with the financial benefits but they refuse to have Holland be turned into a true cannabis paradise, for either personal reasons or international pressure from Germany, France and the UK.

GHS' Arjan actually has a plan for legally growing cannabis based on the revenue made by coffeeshops, he mentioned this in a new documentary called Nederwiet broadcasted 2 weeks ago. He claims that cannabis can be produced at a price as cheap as 50 cent a gram, and due to the growth being based on revenue it can be controlled in an fairly easy way by the government.

For example a reason why the right wing is against drugs is because of news like this:

Today they discovered a grow op in South Holland in a glasshouse complex. It contained 25,000 plants and last but not least the corpse of a man.

Its an obvious cause that after 10 years of actively pursuing growers, you push growing into the organized crime corner. I just hope they start to realize they can get it out of organized crime as soon as they legalize it. Like the prohibition, but I think they will be needing European support to ever let that happen.
