Promix vs Coco (Screw Promix)

I must say that when i got these tomato plants from my neighbor about a week ago I didn't know it would turn into a side by side, but it has.

attachment.php

The red cup is %100 coco, and the black pot is 1gal 50/50 promix/perlite.

The coco has been fed twice a day until runoff, and the pot has gotten one feeding and one watering with no runoff.

Both of these have been fed the same food, just the coco gets that all the time and the promix will be feed water water.

I will never go back to promix. It doesn't even seem fair! Coco is truly like hydro. I'd just never seen the difference with my own eyes. Thanks to this community for all the info to make coco fun!!

Any questions?

although coco coir yields great growth and end product, promix is much easier for beginners and does make a great "base" for many soil mixtures. coco is a little more finicky in my book.

You are right, PM is much easier as that is what I started on. I by no means am anything but a newb, but I had never done a side by side... What a difference just in the rate of growth!

Just into my first month of coco vs pro-mix.....Im very impressed with the root structure and over all vigor of the plants grown in coco. This is from a guy who's used promix since the 80ies....My only issue to start was how much ferts to charge the mix with before useing the coco for cloning..Promix has a starter charge which takes you through the cutting stage, when roots appeared it was time to start ferting.. unlike coco which needs a little precharge....After that learning curve it seems like the perfect neutral medium.

Are you going to finish them out? I would love to see the difference in yield for the final product. Already it would seem the coco plant is FAR healthier looking then the pm plant. :joint:

Sure am! It should be interesting.

Just for the record both of them will be KISSED. The only difference being that the PM plant will get feed water water, and the coco will be fed all the time.

Not sure what you guys are looking at but I see 2 different sized containers. 1 is only 50% promix. 1 looks leggy 1 looks bushy. perhaps too much water has been sitting in the bigger container... You have something here, but it is not a true rep of a side by side.

Well I was under the impression that you have to pot up in coco, and you can grow bigger plants in smaller containers? It will be in the same black container once it roots the red cup. Does that make any sense?

Anyways, I checked the runoff of the coco and it was at 3.2, 5.9!! So I ran some PH's water through it and brought it down to 2.0, 6.1. That should take care of the slight ram's horns that were developing in the coco from too much nutrient concentration near the root zone.

you should be feeding the coco feed water feed water or your gonna get the same problem again in another week or two.. It only makes sense to water like this.. Because if you are only feeding food over and over and over to the coco you will most definatly get lock out from too high ppm or ec of salt buildup.

I'll keep that in mind. I thought that if you keep the coco wet there wouldn't be any build up, aside from the fact that I use drip clean - which I'm starting to think doen's do crap. And I'm also feeding at a teaspoon per gallon which is what evleme and Ioni Botani recommend based on the KISS Method thread with some runoff which is what I do...

Man do I have a lot to learn... :( Back to the drawing board...lol

I think I'll stick with the cheap tomato seeds until i can get them right in coco... Then I'll go grab me some Head Casey and Rez Chemdog!! :)

I'm the meantime I'll work on getting rid of the horns on the coco tomato...lol

Ive found thjat what you put in the top of coco basicly comes out the bottom the same..Put in ferts at 1000 ppm see what comes out...Promix has about double the cation exchange capacity, hense the fed/water/feed shedual..With coco just feed until you get a good ammount of runoff 10-20%...................E/C out

Whatever the conventional wisdom is, this is not a side by side.

Bigger pot of a wetter medium almost guarantees the result you have.
If you take several cuttings from your best plant, and put half in coco and half in the other mix in the same size pots, I suspect the difference won't be so big.

But I think coco will still win.
