Res question for DTW

Hello

If i have a res in a DTW setup, is it necessary to use airstones?? I assume you dont have to as the oxygen wont be drawn out the water by plants as it is drain to waste.

Am i correct?

I am going to make a 70 litre ( 19 usg) res for my veg room and a 120 litre (32 usg) res for the bud room.

If i dont use a airstone should i at least put a small pump in there to mix the water around??

Thanks

I don't run an airstone in my dtw rez, never have. The only time I use a pump to stir things is when I first mix the rez. After an hour i take that pump out.
You are correct in that oxygen will be drawn into the coco as the mix flows thru it.
Mind you, I use Maxibloom or sometimes GH flora.
I've let my rez sit for over 10 days without any fallout or fouling.
Also, my room is AC'd so my rez never gets too warm...

agreed with above with an exception.

i run a second pump in my res to keep mixing nutes up as well, however i have it on for a couple minutes every hour.

The reason i do this is because if you use any "heavy" i.e. cloudy nutes, they will start to settle at the bottom of the res.

i have two 30 gal rez, and completely use one rez per feeding.
then i fill with my water and run air stones for 48 hours so to evaporate any chlorine from my tap water.

If you are running nutes on the more organic side of things, you might want a pump to circulate things, but in a DTW system, the nutes get aerated when they drip into the pot and then draw through the medium itself. Further aeration would be redundant. Aerating the rez is more for ebb & flow and NFT type systems.

ok thanks guys, also i use gh nutes so i will just hand mix the res once a day, which sounds sufficient after your guys advice.

bump!

I used to run coco recirculating and would always keep the rez aerated, one time accidently left it on for the whole weekend, came back to explosive growth. Had it not been aerated should i have expected the same bump in growth? Ive heard you cant over water in coco but i feel like i have hand watering, but with aerated water i dont see how you could overwater, since there is air in the water regardless...
