That's funny. That is also one of the reason I don't eat venision. When my dogs get some I have to kick themout of the house.
Found one shed last year and this year I found 2 matching pairs and 3 that I havent found their mate. Yet

Man... I wanted to go searching for sheds this year.. but had a tree stand accident... I'll prolly beable to go searching in a month or so...
dunno how fast they get eaten around here.

On another note... the next duck hunting dog I get... I plan to train it to shed hunt too... seen some awesome stories.

Finding complete sheds is considered the holy grail when shed hunting... and is harder then most would think. This guy got like 5 complete sheds in like 5+ years... trained his pup to hunt sheds... and got 7 complete sheds in one year... and now he has 2 dogs that do it.. his newer one just learned from the older dog.... but he goes into the woods.. .and these dogs will run off 300m+ and come back with an antler... they sometimes find 20+ antlers in a single day...
they also can bring back caribou, elk, and even moose sheds if you live in such an area.

Can't wait... there's some neat stuff to make out of sheds.

What got my really wanting to shed hunt this year was spotting a 140+ whitetail on my property... saw him 3 times.. never got a shot.. most he showed was about 5 seconds...

Started lookng last year and found one. This year got lucky. Look for where they have the leaves all dug up. That is where they are looking for nuts. Found most of them in feeding areas. Good luck thanks for stopping by. I'll post the rest of the ones I found this year.

If I find any I'll post some pics.

I've read.. along fence lines where they may have to jump, trails to and from bedding area or sanctuary's, or to and from feeding area's is a good place to start!

Nice finds....look along trails where the deer has to jump
over a fence, they will fall off when they land. Also they are
so parinoid while drinking at ponds and creeks that they will
drop them at the waters edge just from looking back and
forth.Watch out for them copperheadedrattlemoccasins!

Snake sucks fat ones. I live next to the rattlesnake and copperhead central of my state. Nothing but bluestone and shale quarrys. Came face to face with too many snakes just checking my plants. That usally ruines a good morning.
I usally walk through the woods untill I find a good healthy trail of deer crap and follow it. Then I keep my eyes open for anything that looks like antlers. Them damn pine branches look alot alike. Went yesterday morning came with in 20 ft of a cayotee. Carrying a gun with me for now on. Good luck.

Nice finds S.T., Other than growing shed hunting is my favorite way to waste the day's. Tip of the day is look with your eye's not your legs. Slow down to a crawl when you hit the bedding and feeding areas. Generally overcast and light rain day's are the best, the sheds glow when wet.

Here in Mich porkypine get a lot along with mice while still under the snow. Check any illegal bait pile you know about or cedar swamps also. My german Shep was great for findin whatever I wanted. Never have found sets

Another good tip: Don't look for whole antlers... this is how most people fail when it comes to shed hunting.
Look for objects like a single tine etc, the rest will appear much easier.

No cedar swamps here(on my property), but I know some good fence lines to follow and a couple good ponds/bedding areas.

Don't see porcupines around here, but field mice are abundant.

This one I found in the same location as the big set that I found. It was burried in leaves. I think it was last years shed of the big one. Found this pair laying next to each other. They hit an over hanging branch and fell off. Lucky.
This is the other pair I found this year. They where a couple hundred yards apart.
Here are the other ones that I found this year.

That does look like the same antler from the year before ST. You can positively ID it by matching up the pedicle's, there like fingerprints, aside from changes in size the pedicles remain identical

When the snow was melting the antler stood out fairly good and shiney. Found most of them just standing and looking and BLAM it's laying there in front of you. Found the big pair while releiving myself, thought they where old pine branches and lo and behold layed the pair.
OGL1 I am like you I enjoy just being outdoors. Fishing season is aproaching soon, time to dust off the canoe. I would like to live farther north and find an elk or moose shed. They are huge.
Acouple of the sheds I found where chewed badly and some not touched. They gotta have some tough teeth to eat an antler.

Nothing like just being out there ST, ya never know what your gonna find. I picked up a massive moose antler this mourning, spent about 4 hours looking for the other side. No luck but tommorow hopefully. I have his set from 2 years back, he was big then but added a bunch the last few years. Good luck with the rod and reel man.
