how important is repotting when using coco? pH Adjustments

Hello all,

Thats my first coco run. After reading loads of pages about stressing the plants and repotting i decided to germinate the seeds in their final pots.

My setyup is:

SJ DS60 tent
Diamond reflector/250w sunmaster dual spectrum
RVK100 for outtake/fresh 100mm for intake
SMSCom Twin Controller
Canna Coco Professional Plus
Canna Coco A&B
Bloombastic
Strains: Vanilla Kush, The Church, Cloud#9, Rocklock (one of each)

I put the seeds into root riot cubes and the cubes straight into the 11l square pots filled with coco. Keeping it moist spraying 5.9 ph'ed water daily and waiting for it to sprout.

I didnt flush or threated the coco at all. Do you think it is necessary using this coco media?

I also noticed the ph'ed water rises the ph after few hours. Is it better to let the water sit for some time and re-adjust the ph or I can user this water right after adjusting the ph for the fist time?

Has somebody tried Canna Coco Nutes w/ Bloombastic ?

the need for re-potting really depends on the size and type of the pot you're using, the length of the vegging stage etc. for that amount of light (250w) i'd probably go with a 1g smart or gro pot. PH is normally stable with coco if you flood to drain. first i'd flush the coco with RO water to start to remove excess salts, then charge it up with a weak-ass solution of coco nutes. i'd toss the healthy seedling into the charged up pot of coco. of course you can just start off in a big pot. but the danger of starting seedlings in a big pot o' coco is over-watering/damping off.

I think Cana coco is one of the brands that don't need a flush. I know for sure Boticacare Coco-Gro is good to go from the bag. It would be ideal if you could run some water through the pots and measure the EC of the runoff. That WILL tell you if you need to flush it out first.

I have had trouble with small plants in coco. The root system never developes well and the overall growth stays slow. Like said before, the coco holds enough water that the roots don't need to travel to find it.

I start with rapid rooter plugs. Then I pot up to a 16oz plastic cup. Let that fill with roots. Then to the final container. I water carefuly until I see roots poking out the bottom...then I'll water with impunity.

The pH thing...That's probably the pH buffers that are added to city water. It would be best to let that settle before using that water. I go 24 hours.

you need to pot up, its the way life is..

you can put them in there final home, but not suggested. the cation in coco, and the small plant roots will accumulate nutrients, and the water i nthe pots will take forever to dry, less so in coco, but you really want to pot up,

only time you should be doing this is if your on a vacation or have an automated setup and cant get to the place for weeks on end.. other then that I see no benefit of throwing small plants with small root systems in huge pots full of sitting water...

thats why i grow hydro .... fbut repotting is nessessary if u want a decent yield i wouldnt expect a 4oz plant in 1 gal most of my soil boys get 1oz per gallon but constantly have to change pots alowwin the roots to fill up the old pot. all seems like a huge pita but its how its done.... u should look into the air pots they prune ur roots and u can grow large plants in them if u keep the watering up. i seen some trees in coco in 3gal but ya watering daily....where as the same plant would be fine in a 10 or 12 gal for a wk.... all i do is once a week drop a hose in my res pump it out pump in new nutes done in 20-30min nomatter how many plants...good luck

Thanks guys. The seeds haven't sprouted yet. So probably tonight I'll remove the starter cubes from the 11l pots and put it into smaller pots for veg, repotting then few days before flowering, is that good?

I use Botanicare (non ready grow) that comes broken up and rinsed in 1.5 cu.ft. bags and the runoff EC is great, but the natural runoff pH is 6-6.2

Before using it I just run 200% 5.4pH water through it, then flush it one more time with 5.6 pH 300ppm nute solution. Squeeze out the excess water, put in the cup/pot, and throw the seed in.

I didn't do this for my first seedling and it had some funky growth. I'm betting because the pH was getting high on me. It takes a week or so of lower pH(5.5-5.6) waterings to get it to go back down, but it eventually will. Coco has a weird buffer. Then once you get under 6, just keep watering at 5.8 and all will be fine.

bloombastic - tried it and liked the results, but the price of the product might be a bit hefty...

transplanting to bigger containers, gives bigger plants...

Sup guys, ive been asking myself the same question about repotting. I have some purple kush/blockhead beans that just sprouted in rw. My plan is to keep them in small rw cubes till theyre well rooted then put them in a 1.5 gal coco/perlite hempy for veg, then a 3gal for flower. I was looking for advice on how to transplant them from the 1.5 to the 3gal or even a 5gal if i can skip a day of watering. Im coming from dwc so ive never done this. And how do you think the yield would be with the 3gal using a 1k hps for flower? sorry jorgeblen dont mean to hijack your thread..just looking for advice. Thanks

hey bonecaver, did you use any other additive together with bloombastic or only ur basic nutrients? would boost accelarator + bloombastic be too much?

I put same size clones in a solo, then into a 2 gal and a 3 gal smartpot. the 3 gal grew almost twice as big. fyi. next grow in my 5x4 1k im just growing 1 plant to see what happens. I will flower in a final 5 gal smartpot. after at least a week more of veg under the 1k. veg likes humidity too, in my closet. and wind does harm youngins it seems. turned small fan off and the edges cleared up nicely. my tree experiment. stay safe
