Vietnam Black x Thai

Hi all! I'm fairly new to posting at Icmag, though I've read through the posts for a few years now. This will be the first S.E. Asian strain that I've attempted so any suggestions are most definitely welcome. :) I'm growing in organic soil in a small space under cfl's for personal use.

First off thanks to Dubi and ACE for making some actually interesting strains available to the community!

Day 5. All ten popped!

The plant in the front is a south african from Astur Jaya. It'll be done in about 8 more weeks. :)

Good Luck with that.

You picked one of the harder strains to grow under CFL,s.

Long veging cycle, long flower cycle. Hope you're not in a hurry.
Wait til you go to 12/12 and nothing happens. They just keep getting bigger.
They will need to be seduced into bud...but slowly.
A couple of minutes a day.

The cab is an old 120gal fish tank stand tipped on end.
2x2x4ft tall.
42w/sqft.
12/12 from seed.

So far the plan is: to mimic 10-20deg lat. photoperiod.
To grow out and open pollinate. (any one know their f/m ratio?)
To supplement UV-B. (might push my temps too much)
To keep 'em small by limiting root mass/nutes/temps? during stretch.
To learn as much about them in a hands on manner.

@Oldhaole,
I've read that equatorials can be finicky going from "veg" to 12/12. That you should wait for alternate phylotaxy and ease them into it. Though, to me it seems that since they come from an area that's basically 12/12 year round, this would be the least stressful to them. Plus, compared to a broadleaf that must veg about a month then flower for two, a 12week Sat. going 12/12 @ seed should mature at about the same time. I'm hoping for 3-4 months for this run. We shall see what I truely get! :)

"Garden of assholes" LOL, Love it!!! That would look tits on a T-shirt!

Dude... I don't want to step on your idea.

But one plant will eat all that space up in two months. But I'm an outdoor grower and I never tried one indoors. But I do have some experience with Black Thai.

It gets huge. Wide sweeping branches. Limiting nutes won't keep it as small as it needs to be, then when it flowers, it takes its own sweet time. Streaching all the way.

I wish you the best, and if you can pull this off...You are a true master.

I mailed ace and they told me this plant would grow to about 1 meter if you 12/12 from seed.

but then again weaker light might cause more stretch as I'm thinking about a 600w

Hello Inquest,

Thanks for trust in our genetics for your next grow, i think sodium would be better to flower them than CFLs.

Best wishes and please keep us updated! :)

I too think that 100wpft and HID/plasma would be the way too go, but heat will be the determinant factor there... :/ Actually, I've been thinkin about triple-pane windows as a method to block heat transfer. So I just might get to use my 400MH for some of this grow.... As far as the height issue, if it works out to 1meter I think I'll be all right! :)

Oldhaole, That description sounds great! (except the flower time! ;) lol) I wish I could grow out-doors! That would be sweet! Imagine ten to fifteen foot plants!! I dont know what I'd do with all that smoke!! I do plan to document everything. That way we all can see what worked and what could have been better. Haha! Dont worry about stepping on my idea, I've a pretty thick skin! ;) I strive to draw my opinions/conclusions from as much and as diverse info as possible.

Dubi, I hope to do you proud! It sounds like you put some solid effort into your genetics and I plan to put, as much effort as I can muster in a closet, into this grow!

Thank you for the input guys!

Nice!!! About how tall did they get? and, Damn, they bud up f*ing huge! How would you describe the smoke from them? Btw, how large of a hole did you prepare for your girls?

Pannonnia, Did they root quickly? and, what kind of setup are you running?

Have you considered a trellis? Check out Freezerboy's Thunk scrog. It's a great way to manage an otherwise unmanageable plant.

Huh, thats cool. They root fast! If I remember correctly, I have read somewhere asian sativas root fast.

Disco, The trellis idea is a good one for a control aide. I would have to make one for each plant, though. I want to keep each plant totally seperate from one another untill after I dry and sample them. The seeds from any special plant gets set aside for more exploring, the "average" plants seeds will be mixed together, and any rejects will be tossed.

Basically I want to increase the occurance of a few traits within a population, while allowing all the other traits to remain as random as is possible with my limited plant numbers.

The one shown here was the biggest. Naturaly. It got to ten feet. It's also a regrow...so I cheated.

The smoke from that plant was a B+ But there was a lot of it.
It's hard to get A grade smoke of of a Sativa that went nine months.

The hole was two ft deep and two ft around. We have great soil here, but SE Asian strains don't need great soil to get big. They are used to shitty soil. Red clay.

And if you want clones, duck soup....they root fast. SCROGing them would help.

Sorry for hijacking your thread. Good Luck.

I will be following this one.

Oldhaole, lol, ten feet and all bud... good lord! No highjack at all! The more info I get from more experienced (in SE asians) growers the better!
Being a regrow, did you notice much difference in the smoke, younger vs older plant?
Soil in Asia is something that I'd missed while looking up info, good to know! Makes sense, considering their reputation for being light feeders.
