dang, I'm really feelin' for you guys that had to do early morning deliveries and Sundays too, shit 7 days a week & probably unlawfully early hours by today's regs.

You're right about never seeing kids anymore, it's all adults in cars now, kinda sad.
Like one of the rites of childhood is gone
excellent point ddrew; give or take your child predator here & there on any given route it's almost unheard of (Girl Scout cookie sales are once a yr & usually accompanied by an adult) sending kids door to door for an everyday job.

Funny thing is that there's where the fabric of our society breaks down. Having your own paper route made you your own businessman at an early age. I learned IMMEDIATELY the responsibility of timeliness when I heard complaints about late delivery due to after school activities. I collected the route monies as did every other kid & saw that a job well done meant regular tips from many customers.

I used to LOVE the snow, I shoveled walkways like so many others of you that have answered here already & yet today i DARE you to tell me your kid goes to the end of your driveway to get your mail everyday, they're spoiled rotten at an early age.

In my day we BOUGHT our music with those earnings, we didn't have the option of stealing it online and making our folks pay for internet services, cell phones, cars @ age 16 etc.......

fuck! am I ranting yet?

So YES ddrew, not only a right of passage/childhood gone but so is the overall work ethic of the population starting right there.

kudos and best karma to ALL of you that instill a decent work ethic in your children today at an early age, neither you nor your kids will ever regret it.

In the 60s my folks belonged to a country club w/a pool, tennis, golf course etc, instead of joining the other kids @ the pool I opted to set up a small soda pop stand between the 13th & 14th hole. it was after the official club owned 9th hole cafe & I kept quiet and hidden from the putters with tree cover so the club allowed me to do this for years.

as a kid I was a money machine.......
