so i emailed the espoma company a while ago inquiring if their sources for their organic blood and bone meal are from organic animals. their response was "We don't spec that when we buy the materials. There would not be enough available to supply our needs." i guess this is no secret. maybe even common sense. so my question is, since it is sterilized, does that make it fine and dandy? is there any reason to have concern? how does the community here feel about it? are there other sources for blood and bone meal that are from organic animals available? what are your experiences with bone and blood meals? i have only used it for several months but i dont intend on stopping unless i try veganics, im just wondering how everyone else feels.

well when you think about it large scale

what got fed to the grain to make the grain seed.. what got feed to the grain grown from the seed crop.. what else did the animal eat, and what materials were used in producing the other food supply..

do the animals get reverse osmosis water, or did they get stream water, or do they get tap water

what shots or antibiotics did they get along the way

Im gonna stop here, but you get the point.. I'm not sure anything is natural anymore, except bird shit, and even then, did they raid the Peruvian orchards grown with chemical and sprayed with pesticides ... .................

to me , your gonna find far and few non messed with products for a garden.. seaweed, rock dusts..

Blood Meal - 13-0-0
Bone Meal - 3-15-0

Fish Meal - 10-4-0
Fish Bone Meal - 5-16-0

Fish meal is derived from the carcasses after they've been filleted. They're placed into vats and lactobacillus cultures and papain are added to the slurry.

The bones float to the top of the slurry and are skimmed off and processed by crushing and sizing (mesh). The remaining fish meal is taken down to a specific pH and the fermenting process is arrested with (usually) phosphoric acid - exactly like liquid fish hydrolysate.

Price on both bone meal and fish bone meal is $28.00 for 50 lbs. Blood meal runs $36.00 and fish meal is $53.00

The price on fish meal has increased 250% in the past year and all of those increases can be attributed to the oil spill last spring in the Gulf of Mexico. Normal pricing (if it ever returns) is $24.00 (locally).

habeeb i agree i dont really think theres some magical untouched all natural wonder thing - id just never thought on it much before and was wondering what other peoples thoughts were. coot, thanks for weighing in - ive been interested in trying fish or crustacean but they are hard for me to get ahold of around here. took me 6 months to get my shop owner to start stocking any amendments at all. everyones on the bottle. thanks for letting me know the process, wild fish or even farm raised seems like a better choice to me than bovine or swine.
