Is CO2 dangerous to humans

Now I know this sounds dumb but my friend won't put CO2 in his grow 'cause his kid sleeps above it. Has anyone heard of a CO2 regulator failing and allowing all of the gas out and harming anyone, or enough filling the house to harm anyone. Or any other situation where a person could be harmed from CO2, either generator or tank.
Also, any ideas on how to convince him its safe as I'm growing in his room right now as well.

THanks all,
Aero

its not good to breath in high levels when im in my room workin for bout 20min i start to feel funny fromit...dont know if its toxic,,,kills borg at high levels... im sure ppl shouldnt be breathin it in. its what we exhale......if ur grow has co2 it should be sealedd so it it used effeciently.... just tell him to make sure everything is well vented and sealed and u will be fined.. i personally would be more worried bout the kids sleepin over a few 1000w lights blastin then co2 poisoning. i run high ppms of co2 and only get that feelin when im in the room with it on ....never outside of it...ur safe.

My friend made his neighbor sick with an ozone generator by venting into his attic. I've never heard of getting co2 poisoning from a grow but that doesn't mean it can't happen. It seems unlikely though, being how much it would take.

Ok, here's a biology lesson... Hemoglobin (part of your red blood cells) can carry both oxygen and carbon dioxide. If there is more CO2 in the environment than is safe for human consumption, the hemoglobin will be full of CO2 and unable to transport O2. This leads to several problem, including acidosis...

Yes, CO2 can be bad for your health. Everything in moderation. :D Swing by my 1800w thread, read page 12- HERE, and it might open your eyes about supplementing with CO2.

Your friend is likely confusing CO2 with CO. Carbon Monoxide is pretty bad. Recent laws were passed making it mandatory to have a CO alarm in your home.

CO2 is safe and beneficial to plants. It's generally safe for humans but in very high concentrations with little to no oxygen, it can feel like you're being waterboarded.

Your friend is worried too much. Tell him to lay down the sativa.. though I respect that he takes such safe precautions, especially with having a kid there. Better safe than sorry. I'm glad he's not taking your word for it without doing research.

If you'd like to change his mind, find some studies on what concentrations are dangerous to humans (kids) and what the chances of the regulator on a grow-op CO2 setup failing are and compute some numbers.

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the concentrations of most of the greenhouse gases have increased. For example, the concentration of carbon dioxide has increased by about 36% to 380 ppmv, or 100 ppmv over modern pre-industrial levels. The first 50 ppmv increase took place in about 200 years, from the start of the Industrial Revolution to around 1973; however the next 50 ppmv increase took place in about 33 years, from 1973 to 2006.[38]

Recent data also shows that the concentration is increasing at a higher rate. In the 1960s, the average annual increase was only 37% of what it was in 2000 through 2007.[39]"

That explains the reason weed is more potent now than in the past! Global warming makes my pot good :D

CO2 Displaces oxygen. That is how they use it to fight fires. It will kill you on the spot in high enough doses. In factories and ships when they release CO2 to fight a fire there is an alarm that goes off a minute before it is released, all HVAC is shut down and the vents have dampers that are closed.

lol, it's more likely the improvements in quality came from growers learning more about what makes the plant thrive, and selective breeding... I'm sure the elevated CO2 has helped increase YIELD, but that's only given that all other environmental factors are ideal. Not that I've been doing my research or anything... :tiphat:

Co2 is heavier than air, especially from a tank (colder) so if the kid is above it, play ball. 4000 ppms will eventually cause death, but you would get light headed from mild hypoxia first.

One day people are going to consider LA the grow mecca instead of humboldt, they won't need CO2 tanks they can just crack a window.

I'm on a roll..... :D

thanks !!! and lazyman and everyone, I guess I shoulda done my footwork right from the start. I'll look for some information on it.
