Firefighters knocking on my door

Why downgrade? The issue is not really about wattage or size here, right? It's simply about stealth. Why not just rebuild a better, more stealthy cabinet to continue using the 600 in? Man, just put it in a large armoire of about 2' x 3' footprint, and then cover up the noise with a server rack right next to it.

Yes, that's right, a server rack. Have you ever heard how loud servers are? And even if you don't have some old broken random servers or computers laying around, they can be purchased for dirt cheap. Remember, this doesn't have to be a working server rack... it just has to look like one.

If people see it and ask you about it, or want you to show them in detail what these computers do, (and you decide against kicking their nosy ass out of your house), just tell them you are a huge astronomy nerd and you are linked up with the SETI servers, running that software that looks for evidence of alien life in the universe.

Even if you don't want to hook up actual live computers, you could grab a few empty server cases and just attach some run-of-the-mill 80mm fans to them so they will at least sound like they are live. You could even put a few blinking or steady LED lights here and there, to complete the image.

As far as the smell is concerned, for those times when you might have to power down the cabinet fan and smell might leak out... just keep a few scented candles around for those times... but most of the time, the power will be on and your carbon filter/fan will do the job for you.

I think, while this was a close call, and your concern is justified, you will not be having this problem again. Lightning rarely strikes the same spot twice! ;)
Listen to hush...knows his stuff...NOOBS LEARN this Tech...

Oy Veh, that's some deep doo-doo you just avoided. Lucky for you!
Best of luck with your downsizing!

deep doo-doo indeed! you in nyc rabbi?

hush: The server rack cover was the one I was going to use but fortunately never had to. I had a keyboard sticking out of the cab a bit with some cat5 cables and a note listing sysadmin terms and server part numbers on the front. It would of worked because everyone knows I work in IT and I do have computers/parts all over the place already.

I have to downsize only because I don't have sufficient space for running a 600w indoors without heat issues in the spring/summer. My main reason is that I'm limited by physical space. The only place I had space to grow in at 600w+ was this, but it's pretty much TOUCHING the water heater and is very close to the power meter that's checked monthly and the gas meter that's checked (bi) annually.

Another big issue is that this grow currently covers part of a door leading to the backyard. Not a problem in the winter but come summer we'll have people in and out of the house for BBQs and stuff. I can play off what the cab is (like hush said, server rack) but it's an overall risky operation. Also the 600w destroys the plants in heat. Constant 95F+ (perfect in winter though!)

Our home is very 'open'—We have a lot of friends here all the time, sometimes when I'm not home, always people going and coming, etc. It's pretty suspicious to outsiders I would guess but it's somewhat normal in NYC, at least where I am. I just feel uneasy having a giant ass box in the middle of a room but I may be able to keep wattage up by having 2-3x small 250w grows perhaps.

I think I just threw up a little thinking about if that happened here... either way you'd be in trouble with a bunch of big plants under a big light, as much as you would have been with the same number under a little one or two. If you're not going to stop growing, then there's not any sense in going smaller, except for your friends in the house who might stumble over a funny looking oversized homemade box (don't know what yours looks like... just sayin) better to go with a couple smaller ones that look nice and fit in with the rest of the decor.

have an excuse to have an air purifier? I have bad allergies and birds in my place. my air purifier is louder than my cab, blows obvious air flow and has twinkly lights showing its doing something. Sitting besides my stealthy lookin cab which is a dark cherry office storage unit so it looks nicer than a home made jobby, stick a plant on top of it, and throw a shirt on the floor in front of it and it doesn't look like anything but a wardrobe with a loud, but effective air purifier beside it- and though the air purifier is actually in my house for dust and pollen control, theres a chance it might be sucking up the stink of planties too. Easily do a 250 in my cab maybe more, if I could keep heat under control. I asked two people who are close to me to identify something new in the room once I was set up and neither pointed out my cab. Recently saw my cab for sale retail for $300 in store, but I picked it up from a guy who does wholesale furniture in a shady little shop for $80. Just needs a bit more thought and much better odour/camo.

you got the balls part down already you're just about good to go!

You know when they build those quick cheap wooden borders around a construction site? That's what the cab is made of. It's a cheap wooden shell around a DR120 tent. It's not painted and it's being raised on cinder blocks. Also has a big hole on the visible side for a vent, with the HPS lamp glowing out of it. It looks pretty ridiculous.. never got around to painting it and putting in a proper vent.

This is exactly the type of setup I'm going for. I can't go with 600w simply because I don't have the space for a cab suitable enough for a 600w, but yours with a 250w sounds like what I'm looking for. I do have an air filter actually but it's silent.. but nobody knows that (they think it's always off) so I'll put it next to the cab like you said.

cheers..

) here's the cab (minus the clutter around it, its pretty much just a piece of furniture and if the people who are coming in to your place are the kind that aren't likely to just walk up and open it, they'd never suspect to look at it.
