Safety concerning vertical grows

I am in the midst of setting up a small vertical grow with a small 250 watt electronic ballast.

I recall reading somewhere that there are some dangers associated with hanging bulbs vertically (ie you need to buy bulbs that are
designed to be hung vertically).

I just bought a cheap e-ballast off of ebay and contacted the seller to see if the lamps included are okay to be hung vertically and he replied saying that it is not recommended to hang them vertically.

I have spoken to an electrician friend and he says that there should be absolutely no worry hanging any sort of bulb vertically.

Do I have any legitimate concerns here?

HPS lamps can be hung any old way. Generally, MH lamps will be manufactured for horizontal or vertical. There are a few with universal burning positions though, like the Hortilux Metal Halide (not the Blue).

You'll have to check the lamp itself for the burning position. It will be stamped on the lamp near the base and will be HOR, BU, or U. Horizontal, Base Up (vert), or Universal, respectively.

Once you go Vert...................you might get burnt!

Yes, I see many burnt arm hairs in your future but it's a small price to pay for all those top shelf nugs you could pull off that 250w.

Im sure your grow shop reply was based covering his ass because he didn't know the answer. It's very unlikely your bulb can't be run vert and even so, just buy a bulb you know will work.

I remember reading that all hps lights made after a certain date are universal...I could be wrong on that though..and I can't remember if it was only 400w bulbs and larger..but just like the extremist said, check the bulb it should say.

so...depends what kinda bulb it is..and what it says on there.

Awesome! Thanks for all the help.

I am planning a 250 watt vert with a sort of modified rdwc setup with two gallon buckets and a larger res outside my homebox xs.

I want to see if i can get going with vert on a small scale and if it works out i will do the same in my 4x4 tent with my 600.

I just dont want to be without smoke for a bit while i get the hang of vert.
