Re-hydrating some dried bud

I have an OZ of Gov. mule thats been sealed up in a mason jar for the last year. It's been burped the odd time but not much else done to it. I threw a hygrometer in the jar the other day to see what kind of RH% there was in the jar and 24 hours later I found the RH% to be 32% which I belive to be very dry. They smell great but I would like to bring the RH% up to around 50%RH.

What I did was clip off a small bud from my almost complete Blueberry grow and threw it in the jar with the oz of Gov. mule. That was 2 days ago now and the RH% is up to 44%. Do you think it's safe to leave the wet Blueberry bud in there to continue hydrating the Gov. Mule or am I looking at a mold issue if I keep it in there? I was thinking about leaving it in there until the RH% in the jar reached around 50% and then I would take it out.

Thoughts?

would not worry about mold to much. imo fresh bud is the best way to re hydrate although everything else mentioned would work too. the mule might grab some of the blue aroma but i would say that is a good thing.

i doubt that bud would be very moist now having donated it to the Gov. Mule, lol, anyway, i don't think you need worry about mold, especially as you seem to be pretty alert.

btw, if no fresh wet bud is available for re-hydration duty, i've always had good luck with celery, it has a high moisture content and it doesn't seem to impart any flavor into the bud.

I remove the wet weed as soon as the subject is re-hydrated. I have had wet weed turn to mold if I forget to take it out.

Thanks guys for all you help. I figured putting a small fresh bud in there would not cause much harm, plus with me watching the humidity with a hygrometer I figure I can stay quite safe in re-hydrating the bud

take a potato cut it up by far the best simple way to rehydrate it doesn't add any scent or flavor and potato is naturally mold resistant

A buddy turned me onto this product @ bovedadirect. They come in different RH levels. I've been using the 72% packs and they are working great. They last close to 2 months per pack.

Ive tried the lettuce, fruit peels, tortilla, plant clippings, and they all left a smell IMO.

I had an issue with mold on my last harvest. I removed and isolated the buds directly effected by mold and put them into one jar. I also removed the parts of buds that were directly adjacent to the moldy ones in case they were effected but not showing signs. These at-risk buds were dried out a little bit more just in case.

I think I dried them out a little too much so I put them on piece of cardboard and put them on my bathroom sink while I took an extra hot shower with the fan off. I think I did this maybe 2 or 3 times.

After clearing them for mold I mixed them back in with everything else and now I can't tell the difference. Maybe it would have been ok just to mix them back in in the first place. I'll never know.

I've never felt comfortable with the idea of putting a piece of bread or fruit in with good buds. I much prefer to snip a fresh fan leaf (or as many as needed, usually doesn't take very many) and place that in a container with the dried buds. If you have a hygrometer, place it in the container as well, and use that as an indicator of when to remove the fan leaves from the container.

I keep my cigars in a humidor and thats where some of my bud goes for curing. Trouble is I smoke it before it can do an extended cure, but a humidor will keep weed at the right RH for your smoke.:groupwave:

OP, are you using a Caliber III as a hygrometer?

Simon

Nope using the xkair round digital hygometer. They are magnetic and stick to the underside of my mason jars perfect.

The reason I went with them is because I have 600-800 Cigars and I've always have great sucess with the xkair hygrometers.

On a side not I use your curing methods Simon and I have been very pleased with it. Thanks for writing it up I'm sure you have helped many many people with your write up.

Very happy to hear that things worked out. I haven't used an Xkair, but I've been meaning to try one out. It seems like a very promising piece. As you're a cigar enthusiast, I probably don't have to explain why I asked. There's some very good advice posted in the thread. Personally, I use a fresh bud, or a fan leaf, or some orange peel. Best of luck.
