whatever the ppm of your starting tap water is will be mostly calcium and magnesium...

if you really wanna know start with ro and add calcium to it...

Stick your pen in a glass of your tap water, see what it reads. 70-85% of that is calcium
with 10-20% magnesium.

Some aquarium liquid tests kits will test for water hardness (Calcium) along with other stuff...

  • Ammonia
  • Nitrite
  • Nitrate
  • Salinity/Specific Gravity
  • pH
  • Carbonate Water Hardness
  • Alkalinity
  • Chlorine and Chloramine
  • Copper
  • Phosphate
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Iron and Carbon Dioxide
  • And others

Call your local water company and ask them to fax/email you the water analysis.

by law they need to have a current report on hand and distribute it upon request to customers.

Why guess?

Cheapest way by far is to contact your water supplier. If you're on a well you can probably get a basic test for cheap/free from a "clean water" or "pure water" supplier that will then try to sell you a $$$ filter. You can ignore this and just use the information they gave you for cheap/free.
